Strength:

great ergonomics, powerful 4.3 v-6 engine, great looks, a classic!! largest strength: CHEVROLET!!

Weakness:

a little gas hungry

this is an outstanding SUV. i can''t figure out why there ar any complaints with this model all. my philosophy is that most people treat their cars and trucks like garbage. as with any vehicle, if you drive it fairly conservatively and do the routine maintenance it should last. i have always bought my vehicles new for the very reason that you never know how the last person took care of it..BUY NEW!! i love this 2002 blazer it should go out of production soon in favor of the larger trailblazer. the 2002 blazer is exactly what i always wanted. i am happy with the handling and interior. chevy did a great job with the ergonomics of the driver side and all passenger amenities. the 4.3 v-6 has plenty of power a little gas hungry.. but all larger engines are. i am completely satisfied with this fine chevrolet product. buy American!!! buy chevy!!!

Strength:

rommy and strong engine

Weakness:

In a side-to-side rollover collision the a-frame was crushed in 18 inches...and the engine was still running after flipping over more than once.

My Blazer was fully loaded and offered many luxuries. It was much rommier than an Explorer but it wasn''t worth it in the long run. It ate gas and The braking system was sub-par. I would not recommend this SUV as a family car because of the short wheel base, and tendancy to flip over.

Strength:

Powerful engine. Very good for highway driving. The exterior of the truck held up very well.

Weakness:

Everything else.

The truck looks good and has a powerful engine but that''s about the only good things I can say about it. The brakes went at just under 30,000 KM. Chev dealer said this was normal. We had them replace the pads but within 15-20,000 KM they went again and again. The leather on the seats is cheap. It has cracked on both the driver''s seat and passanger seat and scratches very easily. At 155,000 KM the truck was bleeding oil from everywhere(again) and coolant. The rotors just had to be replaced because they were warped. The lumbar support on the passenger seat has an electrical short which causes the accessory fuse to get incredibly hot and eventually blow (the fuse cost $20 to replace). The list goes on and on. I will never buy a chev or an american made car or truck again after this. Luckily we just unloaded the truck and bought a Subaru. I just hope it''s better than this truck was.

Model Reviewed: ZR2

Strength:

ZR2 package transforms the Blazer into the best SUV for under $40k CAN. You may disagree, but if you want an SUV and don''t want to offroad, you''re an idiot. Cars generally handle better, are cheaper, and are better on gas. Snow? Get an AWD car with good tires. This truck is perfect for us, we like to hit the trails, and it still drives very nicely on the street. Nothing compares at the same price for what it is. It''s been reliable so far with only one minor glitch(see below.) Headlights are nice and bright compared with 96 Jimmy. Nice easy oil changes for do it yourselfers. This truck looks GOOD! We have the dark navy metallic, and added the hood deflector and vent visors. Looks good when it''s nice and clean with the white lettered BFG A/T''s gleaming. Outside temperature guage is nice to have. Stock stereo is actually not bad at low to mid volume levels. I haven''t bothered to install the Boston Acoustics/MTX setup I had in the Jimmy yet. Remote entry/alarm is nice.

Weakness:

-Spare tire blocks some rear view, BUT-at least it''s not underneath robbing ground clearance or inaccessible if bogged down in mud. -It''d be nice if the cargo area was a bit bigger somehow. It''s pretty good though. -The wiper linkage came apart once, I just snapped it back together, and it has been fine since. -Seems to have a bit of knock and ping on 87 octane. The 96 Jimmy did this also, so it must be a normal thing for this engine. It runs excellent on 89 octane, however. -Not enough people realize how much better the ZR2 is than the standard Blazer.

ZR2. If you want an SUV that has an excellent suspension and off road capability from the dealer, get the ZR2. We had a 96 GMC Jimmy, and the ZR2 package makes all the difference in the world as far as handling goes, on and off road. I measured 6 inches wider at the outside of the tires. This makes handling much more stable, better than a lot of cars(Cavaliers/Sunfires and Grand Am SE come to mind as recent comparisons). The extra 3" lift with the ZR2 package also gives excellent ground clearance. The heavy duty Bilsteins and the rest of the suspension/modified frame on the ZR2 really transform this vehicle into something much better. The stiffer sidewalls of the LT rated 31X10.5/15 ZR2 tires give much better handling than the squishy 235/75/15 stock "P" rated tires. Even on the ''96 Jimmy, we put 30X9.5/15''s on it, and it handled a lot better, these are slightly larger than stock, but with no rubbing, etc. I would recommend the BFG Long Trail T/A''s for street use. They handle very well with nice turn in. I have since changed them for BFG All Terrain KO''s. I noticed the turn in is not as sharp as well as a bit of tire noise. The big difference is that these tires are spectacular in the snow, especially on the ZR2. They are rated for extreme snow conditions(you don''t need chains, they are that good, they are exempt). I think the ride is very good for a truck, especially considering the way it handles. Also, we like doing the off roading, and although for very extreme stuff it''d be nice to have the aftermarket available 6" lift and 35" tires for this, I think I''ll wait. Overall it is excellent on logging roads, stability wise, and handles very bad washouts and rockslides with ease. The brakes are much better than on the 96 Jimmy. Four wheel disc brakes, they make a big difference. The truck stops almost instantly, it seems, when you jam on the brakes hard, with minimal diving. This vehicle handles excellent in the snow with the BFG A/T''s. Steep hills are a piece of cake in 4wd, very stable in general in the snow. Engine is ok on gas, we are getting just over 520km per tank, mostly highway use. This vehicle is loaded except for leather and the space robbing cd changer. Everything works great. Fairly luxurious, especially for a truck. Very nice to drive, comfy, etc. Engine has lots of torque and good acceleration.

Weakness:

MECHANICALLY-A PIECE OF CRAP Do not buy this car, it is unreliable.

DO NOT BUY THIS YEAR BLAZER!! I have had many mechanical problems ever since I bought it w/ 53,000 miles on it. First, ball joints replaced, commmon problem for most blazers. Water pump replaced at around 65k. TRANSMISSION needed to be completely rebuilt for around $2500 at only 70k miles. Thankfully, I bought a 3 yr warranty from the dealership when I bought it used. Brakes wear out quickly, and I do not ride them excessively hard at all. Service engine soon light seems to be on more than is off, yet it costs over $100 (diagnostic test)just to find out why its on. Serpentine belt broke last summer on road trip, very inconvenient. Now, the intake manifold is cracked and needs to be replaced for over $400. The 3yr/36,000 mile warranty has run out and I am looking into buying another car. RESEARCH BEFORE YOU BUY!!!!!

This blazer runs great! I have never had a problem with it so far and it doesnt do anything I dont want it to do. All these people with their blazer problems have either goten unlucky or havent taken care of their car properly. Alot of people drive blazers so if the car was that crappy I dont think we would see so many of them on the road.

A USED FULLSIZE CHEVROLET BLAZER IS A GREAT CHOICE FOR THOSE WHO WANT A 4X4 AND ARE WILLING TO PAY FOR THE GAS. I AM THE SECOND OWNER OF THIS ONE. IT''''S GOT A 400 CID V-8 ENGINE, A AUTOMADIC TRANSMISSION, AND 373 GEARS. BODY HAS VERY LITTLE RUST FOR IT''''S AGE. GOOD BUY FOR SOMEONE WILLING TO MODIFIE. I PLAN ON REPLACING FRONT CLIP WITH ONE OFF A 89 TO 91 TO GIVE THE TRUCK THE NEWER LOOK.

Rear end Shudder

From the first month I owned that Blazer, I had trouble with a SHUDDER when accelerating from a dead stop. I took it in to the dealer, in Wood River,Il for repairs, and the service rep said that it was normal. I had previously owned a 92 Blazer for 8 years, and it never did this. After 8 times in the shop over the next 2yrs, and they never did fix it. I ended up calling a lawyer and got a small amount of restitution, for all of the trouble I had with it. I traded it off, and was glad to get a good vehicle.

Strength:

- Attractive looks - All the options of others in its class- when they work. - Comfortable interior

Weakness:

- Dependability is severly lacking - Numerous design flaws which GM didn''t recall.

The biggest piece of junk I have even seen. I''m sure everyone knows about the factory recalls, cheap-as* interior and exterior trim parts, and seal problems. In addition, I''ve had to replace a computer module that controls the cruise, needed new engine @ 69,000, fuel injector assembly, and both main transmission seals. Now the transmission pump is going out and the upper and lower ball joints in the front end need replaced. This vehicle has been in the garage more than its been on the road. Avoid like the plague.
