Strength:
Nice looks, reliability, good enigine size HP, comes to a stop relatively faster than other SAVs, rated one of the highest by the Highway institude. The transmission provides for three types of driving, manual, automatic and sport.
Weakness:
Not to much storage room between passenger and driver. Paint chips easily. It is a beauty! Very stable and reliable. After 15 months of use there have been no problems with the X5 3.0. We feel it is a very safe car which handles city traffic pretty good and which will get you around during a snow storm. The X5 will take you to Home Depot or to a picnic with the family without the gas expense that comes in a big truck. To some extent is like having the 3Series in an SAV. We also have a 3 Series and each car offers an exiting driving experience. Since we bought the X5 we always fight for being on the driver side. Considering the reliability of the BMWs we plan to keep this SAV for several years. Similar Products Used: Mecedes, Expedition |

Nice Look
Weakness:
Build quality and cheap materials. Audi has leaped past BMW. If Audi had a SUV, game over BMW could learn from Audi on how to improve their interior. I look at this and I realize how cheap and Japanese this appears. my God, 46K and my 10k less Audi is more luxurious. Similar Products Used: Yukon, ML320 |

Strength:
The stability on curves. We were taken on test drives on smooth streets. On rougher streets the car shakes like an old truck. On the freeway the wheelbase is equal to little bit more than the spacing on the cocrete slabs so get the rocking effect. I have injured my neck driving this and I feel I must get rid of the car to save my body. I brought the car in with complaints about the vibration in car from the AC compressor. Stock answer "they are all that way" When I complained about the week AM reception I was told the speakers were bad. When I brought it back for the speaker change I was told it was the radio. 3rd visit to get the radio exchanged. I feel that BMW is dancing around with all these problems and they are trying to wear me down. Another problem only with tall people is the front door tops will hit you in the head if you don't stand back. One last problem: The tires were delivered with 40 psi and ride was really bad. I let the air to the required 32PSI and the ride improved a little but the dealer warned me that the tires will wear out much faster at the factory recommended pressure. All in all the car sucks. It now works Similar Products Used: Accura MDX Test drove after the fact. |

Beautiful car inside and out, but the beauty is only skin deep.
Weakness:
Too many to mention. The word LEMON comes to mind. If reliability is a priority to you, then don't buy an X5. This is a high priced lemon. I purchased an X5 for my wife thinking it was one of the safest vehicles on the road. Boy, was I wrong. The vehicle has completely shut down on us 4 times in the 3 months since we purchased it, stranding our family for hours in the process. (And BMW Roadside assistance is a joke!) The gas guage will unexplicably go to zero at any time, but that's the least of our problems. Not knowing when the car will shut down completely in the middle of traffic (or the middle of nowhere) has left us no option but to re-sell this lemon with full disclosure at a significant loss. The sales executives at 3 Rivers BMW won't even return our calls, and always seems to be out of the office when we are there to pick up the vehicle after service, which is a weekly event. Even though we have the same symptoms with every visit, they always classify it as a different problem, presumably to avoid the lemon laws. This was the worst car purchase of my life. And with the dealer treatment I received, I will never purchase another BMW, even after the good experiences I've had with the 5 and 7 series. BMW X5 3.0
Strength:
Its great to drive when it works well. Even the 3.0 engine gets you where you need to go as on our last trip we drove from Grand Junction, CO to Redondo Beach, CA over 900 miles in 10 hours with an hours stop in Las Vegas for dinner.
Weakness:
Too many to mention on our 2001 The vehicle started out as a great buy, primarily my wifes car. However the gremlins found the car about 18 months ago and we have had nothing but trouble since. 7 times we have run out of gas with guage still showing quarter to half full. Complete transmission replacement and a number of electrical gremlins that caused lights to flash at will/not operate/lock vehicle/memory problems/radio problems. We are going to give the 2003 replacement BMW have given us a try before we quit for good with this car. Similar Products Used: Range Rover, Suburban, Trooper, Land Cruiser. |

Strength:
This is truly a fine driving machine, not just for an SUV, but for any car. The handling, acceleration and braking are superb. The car drives wellunder all road conditions and actually performs well off road too, at least under moderately poor conditions--I wouldn't take it on the Rubicon!
Weakness:
Reliability. I've had this vehicle in for servicing too many times to count, usually for electronic problems--replaced the main computer twice and the dealership never could tell me what the problem was/is. The navigation system is expensive and of marginal quality-- it failed and needed replacement--there's got to be better ones out there. The Integrated phone, the trunk lid and electronic transmission all failed twice for the same reasons. When the trans failed the first time I was 120 miles from home in the middle of the woods on a holiday weekend. I was in a poor cell phone reception area but finally connected with BMW roadside assistance--they were helpful-- because the car wouldn't start. By the time the the tow truck arrived, I had been able to start the car by shifting it out of park and into neutral and limped home in 4th gear. The second time it happenned I was close to home an drove straight to the dealer. This unreliability makes me reluctant to travel far with this vehicle (which was the purpose in buying it.) THe ultimate driving machine for an SUV. Nothing compares in terms of handling or performance. Very poor reliability. Have had to have serviced many times, often twice for the same problem. |

Strength:
Fast. Tight steering. Sounds good. Very little body roll especially with sports package.
Weakness:
Very little cargo room. Sports suspension rides rough. Some wind noise around sunroof even when closed. I've never like BMW's climate control system. Over $63k is ridiculously expensive, but that's the price you pay for exclusivity. It's been a good vehicle so far. There are a few minor problems primarily the fault of the prior owner not being as picky as me. It's definitely lacking in cargo space, but it's about the classiest 4x4 on the road. The sport package is too stiff even for me. I wish I had gotten a non-sport and just added the wheels. Unlike most everyone else I like the navigation system. I'm not sure why some people complain about the gas mileage. I routinely get 19 highway at 80-85mph. I even get 16 or so around town in mixed driving. I think that's pretty good. I've never gotten less than 14mpg. Similar Products Used: Suburban, Tahoe, Explorer, Expedition, Excursion, 528i. |

Strength:
Excellent auto transmission with sport mode and steptronic. Excellent engine. Good steering feel. Very comfortable standard seats. Nice standard stereo system (I don't recommend the premium system).
Weakness:
Slightly overpriced (compared to the Acrua MDX). Some options are overpriced and fairly useless (sports package, premium radio). Navigation system is weak (I didn't get it). The X5 has had problems with early run models, the 2002 appears to have the bugs worked out. Great SUV, drives very similar to a decent sports car. Excellent performance from the 3.0. better with the 4.4. Very good braking, top notch steering, solid build quality. The Acura MDX is also an excellent SUV for a lower price. I prefer the BMW due to tighter handling and ergonomics that I prefer. Watch for some other fake reviews. My gas milleage is 21 highway, 17 city. Overall I'm getting 19.9 MPG. Other than the Acura, there is no other SUV that compares to the X5. I'm not a big fan of the sports suspension, the stock X5 is plenty firm.
