Toyota MR2 Sports

DESCRIPTION

The Toyota MR2 is a mid engined, rear-wheel drive, 2-seater sports car manufactured by Toyota Motors Corporation of Japan. Mark I, II and III are the three commonly known generations of MR2. The Mark I or the first generation is produced from 1985 to 1989. It uses two types of engine such as the normally aspirated version manufactured from 1985-1989 and the supercharged version produced from 1985-1989.

Produced from 1990-1995 and extended until 1999 for Japan and other countries is the second generation MR2 or the Mark II. It comes equipped with two engine versions, the normally aspirated manufactured from 1990-1995 and the turbocharged produced from 1990-1995. The third generation or Mark III commonly known as the MR2 Spyder is considered as the first convertible model. It is produced from 2000 with its normally aspirated and turbocharged engine version. Its classic creation is better known to be boosted by MR2 Toyota Parts. Fit, precise, and top-quality are the distinct characteristics of these parts.

expect to spend good money on good tires.

This Car is incredible. There's no better value for performance, reliability, and looks as far as I'm concerned. There's something magical about a mid-engined car that other drivetrains just can't compare with, and the MR2 is a perfect example of that.

Fast, reliable, comfortable, and fun to drive! Mid-engined layout makes this thing a handling dream.

Weakness:

High gas price, no cargo space

Having owned an Acura Integra and Mitsubishi Eclipse previous to my MR2, it is safe to say that in the import sports car market the MR2 can not be beat. Pound for pound the mr2 beats them both in speed, reliability, handling, and the most important 'fun to drive' category. This is my daily driver to and from school and work for over a year now with no problems other than the minor quibble of owning a 10 year old car's tranny that has been driven hard. Second gear is getting a little stiff now nearing 120,000 miles, and is being reworked in the near future. Asides from that, Toyota reliability throughout! This is the first car I have owned that I can not see myself replacing a few years down the line. Overall, a great car to toss around

Strength:

The 1991 MR2 Turbo was rated at 200 hp @ 6000rpm and 200 ft/lbs torque @ 3200 rpm with a published 0-60 time of 5.9 seconds. Add this with Toyota quality and an semi-exotic body/mid-engine layout and you have one incredible automobile.

Weakness:

The 1991 & 1992 MR2's had a tendency for tail-happiness. Toyota upgraded the suspension in 93. Also the 91 and 92 cars had 14" wheels with 195/60 series rubber up front and 205/60 series rubber in back. The 93's and above went with 15" wheels with 205/55 up front and 225/50 in back. Both the combination of the suspension upgrade with the wider tires calmed the tail happiness of the car.

With a little over 260,000 miles on my MR2... the original turbo and engine are still pulling strong. Also, for a car that is over a decade old, I feel it still has a fresh design, a very solid engine (260,000 miles should be proof enough) a very good OEM stereo (CD/Cass/Radio 6 spkr + sub) plus a good list of options and standards.

Strength:

Combination of excellent qualities found only in cars costing much more. Super fun to drive. 200HP and 200ft/lbs. Great handling. Reliable. Awesome interior. Modifications are effective on this car. Not a common car.

Weakness:

No more turbos imported to USA after 95. Tranny is not that great with 300+HP. I have 277RWHP and 255ft/lbs of torque on a bad day (101F ambient temps on Dynojet) so I have a little trouble with shifting sometimes, especially with a short shifter. 91 and 92 suspension is very tail happy which is very bad for the novice driver. 91 and 92 don't come standard with LSD or revised suspension which reduces unwanted oversteer.

These cars are getting old so be aware that some may have been kept very poorly or mistreated.

Excellent car for the above-average driver. I will never give this car up until the parts are literally falling off. I would recommend this car highly to any car enthusiast who knows how to drive well. Modders would also have a field day with this car due to it's strong bottom end (block, crank, rods, pistons).

I would not recommend this car for a novice driver that THINKS they can handle a RWD car. Oversteer can be very dangerous.

Nothing in the same price range can compare with this car because of it's blend of qualities. I know of no car that is as economical, FUN to drive, reliable, mod-able, good quality and looks good.

Alot more roomier than the old MR2.

Weakness:

T-Tops have no tint to it. Seems to let too much sunlight in and it can get a little too hot inside.

I would definetly recommend this car. Paid around 9000 about 3 yrs ago and still love this car. What is nice about this car is that it does not seem to go out of date as fast as other cars. Meaning that it is hard to tell between a 1991 MR2 or a 1995 MR2. Only minor changes have been made. Its been about 5 years since MR2's have been sold here, and still the MR2 does not look outdated. So if you want a car performs well, exotic looking and a car that nobody has...MR2 is for you.

Strength:

Great handling, quick off the line, very good all-around performer. Now that I own an MR2 I'm coming to realize that it's well-respected by 300ZX TT, 3rd gen RX-7, and other sports car owners who have cars worth twice as much. For the money no other car can touch it as a total package.

Weakness:

A little cramped when the t-tops are on. I like this, but some may be annoyed at being able to hear every sound the engine makes. Like all turbocharged cars, it can be quirky once in a while.

The MR2 is great if you want a reliable, well-rounded car that will give you great bang for your buck. I love MR2s as much as any owner (I just got mine a few months ago after years of waiting) but I must admit that it's not the supercar that many MR2 owners make it out to be. Sure it's quicker than most any other car, but don't go buy a stock turbo for $8k and then expect to beat new vettes and 300ZX TT's. The MR2 shines on curvy roads and makes an excellent daily driver that will beat just about any ricer.

PLEASE READ:
To those who read the post of the guy who prefers his 1988 Pontiac Fiero Formula over a 1995 Toyota MR2 Turbo, he's full of crap. Go to http://www.users.qwest.net/~racing2win/fieronet.html to see the specs on the formula fiero (140hp/170lbft) and tell me why he likes it better than the rarest model of the MR2 MKII's? There is no way this guy picked up a 1995 Turbo for $8k.

Strength:

This car is fun as hell to drive. Nothing compares to its handling. Even the my NA model has enough power to blow many supposedly more powerful cars out of the water. Also, it's a Toyota. That means that it's one of the most reliable cars in existence. I just had the timing belt changed and water pump replaced at 125,000 miles, and it runs like a charm. No problems whatsoever. It doesn't burn a drop of oil.

Weakness:

Weaknesses? What are you talking about? It's an MR2!!!

I got my 1991 MR2 NA two years ago as a present from my dad, and trust me, this is the gift that keeps on giving...every single time I drive it. About a year ago, I had a $1700 sounds system professionally installed, and that was one of the best moves I've ever made. Then about six months ago I had the car revamped: had some body work done, new professional paint job (MR2 Spyder Yellow - nothing looks better), new power antenna, etc. Of course, I have to add some personal custom touches to the car myself every once in a while (white gauge faces, MR2 sill plates, custom decals, etc.). I've had no problems with this car since I got it. This thing will last me forever. It handles better than any car I've driven, and it's amazingly roomy for a little 2 seater. I'm a pretty big guy, and I'm perfectly comfortable in it. I wouldn't be surprise if my little Yellow MR2 lasted for another 200,000 miles! The only person who shouldn't consider buying this car is someone with a big family. This car is a must for EVERYONE ELSE!

Both of those cars above have their strengths. I have to admit the miata was about the easiest car in the world to drive. I couldn't have stalled if I had tried. But it lacked the handling, the pickup, and the simple yet beautiful look of the MR2. As for the mustang, well...sorry guys, Ford just can't get it right. Handling was horrible, and don't even TRY to make a U-turn without three lanes to work with. Acceleration is even worse. I beat it in my NA MR2. Hey Ford, that's pretty weak. And don't even get me started on reliability. I wouldn't be caught dead in any American car (sorry to say, but it's true), because I probably would end up dead on the side of the road. MR2 has the mustang beat hands DOWN.

Model Reviewed: MR2 - Black w/cloth

Strength:

Too many to list, but here are a few;
-Truly enjoyable to drive; you laugh sometimes
-Instinctive handling
-An elastic engine that always wants you to keep pushing
-Reliable and economical - low maintenance, high gas mileage
-7500 rpm redline - the highest for a production car that year
-Fuel-cut off limiter at 7600 rpm, thank God!
-You can always find a parking space

Weakness:

All minor;
-'85 & '86 have no lock on glove box
-Try opening the center storage bin while sitting in the car
-Speeding tickets

I've owned two 1986 MR2's. One was a two tone green/beige with black leather and the other is black with cloth. Both had the full spoiler package, and of course, both were stick. I drove the first one for 1.5 years, then it was stolen and stripped. I still have the second after 11 years. Two of my friends bought MR2's after driving mine.

MR2's are unbelieveable. They handle so well that they feel connected to your brain. I babied my first one because I was young and it was beautiful. After it was stolen I was pissed I didn't get the as much joy out of it as I could have. As soon as my speeding tickets cleared, I bought the second. I've driven the crap out of it for the past decade plus. The last time a cop pulled me over, I said "it's about time".

You can maneuver through traffic, and do it safely, believe it or not, like a pro. The mid-engine design, compact design and low height is to blame for the neutral handling. It does what it should, you feel that it could practically pivot on axis around a corner. It is not quick by today's standards, but it feels quick. It's a blast to keep it in second or third up to redline (7500 rpm) while other cars are shifting through multiple gears trying to keep up. Four wheel drifts happen without much effort - and they are controllable. MR2's may not be very quick and may not have the best handling numbers, but no car is more fun.

My cars never needed more than routine maintenance. When I bought my second car it had 50K miles on it and the original owner never did anything but oil changes; not brakes, clutch, plugs, or air filter. I've done routine stuff but the clutch is still original at 110K miles.

For the first few years I thought the car was hideous in appearance. Now I like it. It reminds me of an era of Japanese design that was very distinctive. If you get a chance to buy one in good condition - look past the sheet metal and drive it, you'll be very glad that you did.

I think an Acura NSX may be as much fun, but I haven't tried one yet. It's a shame Toyota stopped selling the second generation MR2's in the U.S., but it's possible the MR2 Sypder has captured some of the fun.

Enjoy it and enjoy driving.

Ed A.

P.P.S. Buy Yokohama tires, they wear fast, but they stick like glue.
