DESCRIPTION

The Toyota MR2 is a mid engined, rear-wheel drive, 2-seater sports car manufactured by Toyota Motors Corporation of Japan. Mark I, II and III are the three commonly known generations of MR2. The Mark I or the first generation is produced from 1985 to 1989. It uses two types of engine such as the normally aspirated version manufactured from 1985-1989 and the supercharged version produced from 1985-1989.

Produced from 1990-1995 and extended until 1999 for Japan and other countries is the second generation MR2 or the Mark II. It comes equipped with two engine versions, the normally aspirated manufactured from 1990-1995 and the turbocharged produced from 1990-1995. The third generation or Mark III commonly known as the MR2 Spyder is considered as the first convertible model. It is produced from 2000 with its normally aspirated and turbocharged engine version. Its classic creation is better known to be boosted by MR2 Toyota Parts. Fit, precise, and top-quality are the distinct characteristics of these parts.

Strength:

It's still a unique car! The handling is excellent, the power is great for stock, and it has some really comfortable seats (better than my old accord). Parts and maintenance can get expensive on this car, but you'll be okay as long as you find someone you can trust to do it for you (or do it yourself, but if you screw up, it's your own fault!). I love the solid clutch on this car!

Weakness:

Pretty poor in winter; snow tires (i have Bridgestone LM-22) help ALOT!!!! Tires get eaten up fast. So far, i haven't gone more than 15k miles for a set. 91-93 taillights are ugly; i upgraded to the 94+ taillights (looks great).
I can't carry my mtn bike or snowboard on it. Snowboard fits inside, but then i can't take my girlfriend. So we take her car =)

I have had no mechanical problems whatsoever with this car. It has all the factory options (except leather) and everything is great. It even has room for golf clubs!! I'm one of the lucky ones with a 93 turbo with less than 40k miles that was first owned by a mechanic who used this as his "drive through twisty mountain roads on nice days" car. It's in tip-top shape and is a piece of art. No other car I've driven so far compares performance-wise. Not the integras (gsr or type r), preludes, celicas, civics. It looks better than any of these cars, including the supra, eclipses, wrx. For the price these babies go for, I don't think that there is anything out there that can touch it. The Rx-7 is in a different class. I still see prime examples going for over $30k, and stock kicks mr2 in the hiney. But do you really want a Mazda???? These cars are 10 years old, and discontinued since 95 in the states, but it's still untouchable.

Similar Products Used:

Integra Type R / GSR - has more trunk space and backseats, which comes in handy sometimes, but the MR2 is more exotic and FASTER! Integra does get more aftermarket support, though. The clutch on this car is weak.
1999 Mercury Cougar - I'm sorry, did i just compare the MR2 to a COUGAR??!?! I should be shot.... I'm really sorry...
1993 Prelude - girlfriend's car. I hate to say it, but my car kicks her car's butt. She knows this and is ok with it. She drives my car every chance she gets... hehehe
1998 prelude SH - it's got 5 fewer horses, i think, but it's slower cuz it's heavier. and it has those ugly headlights. Didn't like the clutch, although it shifts very smoothly.
2000 Celica GTS - has a lot more body roll, is slower, is ugly, i can't feel the clutch. I do like the chrome interior accents, and the pedal covers.

Oh, yeah! and the little guy has a huge trunk(in the rear none the less!)91

Weakness:

None! other than the following:
Very hard to work on yourself. Be prepared to loose your patience. I've acually come very close to braking a finger!
warm-up/cool down period of at leat a min. if you want to keep your mr2 in good shape! no joke! turbo timer recommened
Snow/ice and mr2 do not mix!!
Be gentle on long trips
guzzles! Turbo can kill a tank in under 200 miles!

My experience with my mr2 has been pure fun! In the first week I owned it I put down 1000 miles!
No major complaints(see weaknesses- my enrties there are more car care than complaints)
And the rating I gave mr2 reflects pure enjoyment with very few worries

Similar Products Used:

Pontiac Firero- Mr2 has more room , a better crash rating, and, well, pontiacs come off the road a lot sonner
Mazda Miats- Mr2 is much faster and handles much better has more room too
There's nothing else like it!!! Nothing even close!!! That is unless you want to spend 80k on a Lotus Esprit V8 T.T. And toyota even got
a hand from Lotus engineers- that explains the similarities

Strength:

This car never ceases to put a smile on my face. Every time you pull up to it after riding with a friend, or getting home after not driving it (which is painful enough) I just think to myself " I can't believe I've got an MR2" It is fast, comfortable, roomy for a 2 seater, and loaded with features. PWR windows, locks, cruise, T-Tops, A/C, 8-speaker stereo...EVERYTHING

Weakness:

The only thing about this car is that the repair costs are high. As with any foreign car, vs. domestic, one can expect to pay more, but the MR2 is up there with Corvettes and HIGH end sports vehicles. IMO

-unless you're really good, don't expect to do a whole lot of work on the engine yourself.

I bought this car about a year ago, and I have had nothing but amazing luck with her. Modifications are easy. There is nothing more wonderful to me than to have people on the road stare at you, watch you drive, and proclaim how awesome your car is. T-tops off in the summer, and cruising, will make any day a good one. IF YOU FIND an MR2----BUY IT!!!

It has to be the layout, Mid Engine, Rear Wheel Drive, and Two Seater.

Weakness:

Still very eyes catching even it is 10 yrs old.

Glad to be the frist car that I use my owne money to brought it. Now it is in the workshop in the process of replacing the timing belt(done 100,000 Km), and other parts, just can't wait to drive it again.

The feeling of having the engine sitting behine you, it is just so much better. Even the RX-7 cannot compare to it.

Buy it, if you want to make a statement
Don't Buy it - If you have a family with kids

This car is the total package. Handling, power, comfort, T-tops, mid rear configuration, two seater, braking, and the ablility to make more power with basic bolt ones. It also handles extremely well at high speeds. At 100 mph it feels like only 60. This is the car for the import inthusaist who want a nice car other than a civic or and integra, (not that those two cars can even hang with it)

Weakness:

This is a bad luck car! I got pulled over three times by the cop in the six month that I drove it. Twice for speeding and once for the hec of it. When you drive this car, it makes you want to go fast. I though I was doing 75 in a 70, looked at my speed, and it said 100! Next thing you know, the cops are flasing their lights.

I would recomend this car to who ever can afford it. I say it because the insurance is pretty high and lets face it, some of these cars are over ten years old. So expect some minor things to break down. It's a good weekend driver car. You'll love everything about it. I literally bought the car without even test driving it. I saw it right away and was in love with the car. You'll love every aspect of this car to the detail. I sold my MR2 and I miss it so much. The rumble of the dual exuast tips at idle, the whizzing from the turbo at about 3500 rpms, the loud 8 speaker system, and the growling of the 3s-gte when you floor it. This car has it all! Buy it! But save one for me, cause I plan to buy another one, some day........ Notice the five stars that I gave, actually this car is like a ten star car, but it just won't go that high.

I traded the MR2 for the new 2000 Celica GTS. When I first drove out the lot and give the Celica some gas, I knew right away that the celica could not hand with the Mister Two. Next I took the next corner pretty hard, a lot of body roll. Felt as if the car shifted to one side. The MR2 on the other hand stays flat, and with the LSD, the wheels never spun too excessively. I ended up trading it cause I wanted to start on a new platform to supp up. The MR2 was close to 100000 miles and I didn't want to dump a lot of money into it so that's why I got the Celica. Overall, hands down the MR2 is a way better car than the Celica GTS.

Handling, acceleration, dependable, luxury, and most of all, fun!

Weakness:

Driving in wet or snow conditions.

I searched for about 8 months before I found the MR2 that I was looking for. I have always loved MR2s and have not been disappointed in my expectations. I couldn't believe it, I get just as many looks and complements when I drive the MR2 as when I drive the Corvette (which is bright red with side exhausts and fully restored. I paid 4 times the amount of money for the Vette and I find myself always wanting to drive the MR2 instead. What can I say, if you want a great performance, fun driving, inexpensive, and exotic (sorta) car, the MR2 is for you!

I currently own a 1998 Honda Accord Coupe V6, 1987 Toyota MR2, 1969 Camaro SS350, 1965 Corvette roadster 327/350HP, and a this newly purchase '91 MR2 Turbo. Which is my favorite car? The 91' MR2 Turbo. The Corvette and Camaro are faster, but do not have the handling or luxury of the MR2. The Accord is nice on trips, but boring to drive.

Strength:

T-tops, smooth shift, awesome roadholding ability, Agressive sounding factory exaust and outstanding looks, great seats and no sliding in them around hard fast turns. Great MPG. Easy to get parts from dealer.

Weakness:

Could use more power out of the NA 2.2L 4. Wind noise at highway speeds. Speedometer is hard to read at night due to the odometer.

I am 26 and have owned over 12 cars in my life. 9 of which were bought brand new. Some of which were a 93 Probe GT, 97 Mustang Cobra SVT, and 96 Acura Integra. I have wanted a Mr2 as long as I can remember. I favor the 91-93 bodystyle to all MR2's including the newest mkIII. Condidering all the cars I have owned this one puts the biggest smile on my face. I love the look of it and this car is a blast to drive. It does need more power but it is still more fun than any car I have ever had. Exellent condition and low mile MR2's are a rare find. Mine has 66k on it and is very very clean. I had to go 1.5 hrs to find this one. People tell me the NA MR2 engine is good for 250K+ miles as long as you maintain it so I have no fear considering it is just broken in now.

Weakness:

besides lack of cup holders.... NADA

Besides being a very unique car, the sheer power this engine produces is incredible! I've added a fcd, boost controller, and iridium spark plugs all under $250 and I have about 215 H.P. and 220 lbs/ft of torque at the wheels! Thats just for starters, but this car is a really all around automobile. It's mid engine design, and great suspension provides for great handling characteristics for skilled car enthusiasts! This isn't a car thats dedicated to speed but if you want to see how fast it can be check out this video site...

Strength:

Wow, what a great little car. Very fun to drive, easy on gas with a great sounding motor and lots more torque and hp than my Civic sedan. It comes loaded with amenities. Very distinctive profile and mid-engine layout.

I'm the second owner and the previous owner kept in garaged and only put 55K on the odometer. It looks brand new and nearly drives like it's new.

Weakness:

No cup holders (a minor annoyance). The synchros on the clutch need adjustment. Hard on rear tires.

This is an exceptional value for a sporty car. The NA version is darn peppy (at least if all you drive is cheap sedans). The good gas mileage coupled with the Toyota record of reliability makes this a very good deal on the used market provided you can live with the constraints of a true two-seater although it has a surprising amount of trunk space.

I smile every time I get behind the wheel--something that has never happened to me in any other vehicle. You'll have a hard time finding a better value for under $10K when you consider the fit/finish, amenities, reliability and fun factor.

Strength:

Car has good accelleration.
handles great at low speeds.

Weakness:

Cramped interior, twitchy handling at highway speeds, (even with aftermarket wheels/tires), Too much brake fade duing road course racing, (brakes overheat) Rear tires seem to wear out faster and not evenly. Had numerous alignments and still could not get it right.

I onwned the car for 6 months then got rid of it. Drove it in sanctioned road course races (GTU stock class) on weekends and as a daily driver during the week. The car did poorly on the road course. It has the power but lacks the brakes and suspension to be a true performer. The weaknesses could be improved with aftermarket parts but that would cause me to change racing class. As a daily driver it was OK. Has quick acceleration and good gas mileage.
After driving a friend's Fiero, I realized that the Fiero was better suited for the type of racing I was doing. If you are seeking a mid-engine 2-seater that is fast going stop light to stop light you'd be happy with the MR2. If you want a better balanced car for road courses get the Fiero.
Finaly, repair costs are less with the Fiero than the MR2. That is to say that the parts themselves are less expensive with the Fiero. Both cars have never given me any reliability problems. Since I race weekends and drive it during the week, surprisingly neither car has left me stranded.

Similar Products Used:

My 1988 Fiero Formula alot better. The MR2 was faster in a straight line but overall the Fiero is better suited for large roadcourse racing. Reliability between the cars is the same.
