Porsche 928 (1995 and older) Sports

DESCRIPTION

The Porsche 928 was a sports-GT car sold by Porsche AG of Germany from 1978 to 1995. The 928 featured a large, front-mounted and water-cooled V8 engine driving the rear wheels. The original 4.5L V8 engine featured a single overhead camshaft design, it produced 219 hp. Porsche upgraded the engine from mechanical to electronic fuel injection in 1980 for US models.

Porsche utilized a transaxle in the 928 to help achieve 50/50 front/rear weight distribution, aiding the car's balance. Although it weighed more than the difficult-to-handle 911, its more neutral weight balance and higher power output gave it similar performance on the track.

The body was mainly galvanized steel, but the doors, front fenders, and hood were aluminum in order to make the car more lightweight. It had a substantial luggage area accessed via a large hatchback. The new polyurethane elastic bumpers were integrated into the nose and tail and covered in body-coloured plastic; an unusual feature for the time that aided the car visually and reduced its drag.

Strength:

It has a 303 c.i. Reynolds 390 crystal silicon alloy aluminum fuel injected hemi V8 engine featuring 32 valve double OHC with a 5 spd sintered bronze synchromesh tranny developing 316 SAE net bhp at 6,000 rpm (redline is 6,200 but rev limited to 6,800) and 317 ft/lbs of torque @ 3000 rpm (300 ft/lbs from 2750 - 4500).C/R is 10:1. Variable tuned intake kicks in at 4000 rpm for better breathing. The timing is set for each cylinder independently. Dual coils and distributors with twin anti-knock sensors. It does 0-60 in 5.7 secs and the 1/4 mi. in 13.9 sec at 101 mph.. Top speed...165 mph. (100 mph in 3rd). Not too bad since it weighs over 3500 lbs. It has power everything, leather upholstry, air conditioning, a perfect 50/50 weight balance (without me in it of course),Weissach axle rear wheel steering.,4 wheel independent suspension, sunroof, 17" 5 spoke Porsche C2 wheels with 225/50s in front and 245/45 in back with posi-traction and ABS. Diagonally operated 4 piston calipers on 12" four wheel vented discs stop from 60 mph in 137ft. Gets 16/22 mi./gal., front and rear spoiler. The hood, fenders, doors, and suspension components are aluminum and the rest of the car is double dipped galvanized steel. 12way adj. seats with lumbar position and air bladder. pop up headlights. Oh, and in case you were wondering...yes the glove compartment is also air conditioned. This is a beautiful car which is as fun to look at (almost) as it is to drive. The car went for around $70 k new. It has under 60K miles. Pretty good discount. Remember...everyone drives a used car. I haven't had any mechanical problems as the car had a complete service history and was inspected before the purchase (highly recommended). Handling is great.

Weakness:

The cost of repairs and parts. The "big three" (Devek, 928 Specialists and 928 International) are essential partners in providing reasonably priced parts and maintaining a 928. They all have web sites and offer technical assistance. The Porsche "Rennlist" is also recommended for info on the 928.
Interior noise can be high on rough roads
The steering "tracks" road irregularites due to large tires.

These cars were made from 1978-1995 can be found in perfect to miserable condition. It is essentially the same car with continuous power increases, engine design upgrades (16 to 32 valve)and a body style change in 1987. This car is beautiful and fast. It is a 2+2 but the rear seats won't fit any one over 8 years old. Should only be purchased by someone who is interested in a special car who has the money and integrity to keep it in the condition it deserves. A piece of automotive history that has few rivals. I like it and would recommend it. For more info pick up the book "Porsche 928 Performance Portfolio" which is a bunch of road tests
published by Brooklands Books.

Strength:

Power, comfort, and handling. At 6'5" I have driven mostly Mercedes all my life, and thought they handled pretty well. As I understand it, Porsche designed the 928 to take on the SL class of Mercedes. It is kind of ironic that the automatic transmission 928 actually uses mostly mercedes transmission parts. I got my 928 after test driving several 911's and I did not care for their ride or go-cart feel. A friend actually got me to test drive his 928 and I did not think I would like it. I never really thought of a 928 as a pretty car, and doubted that I would be too impressed. I was never more mistaken. I actually fit in quite well and comfortably. Since I have bought my 5.0 liter 1987 S4 I have not been let down. The steering is crisp and the engine is plenty powerful for any of your needs. The handling is like it is on rails, thanks to the unique "weissach" axle. So far I have only had my S4 going 110 mph, but the handling was just as firm and the ride as smoothe as 50mph. Even at my height, a several hour road trip was quite comfortable and enjoyable with no fatigue. This car does turn some head, but only of those who know what it is. The real appreciation comes form the driving experience, and this is THE drivers car that has ruined me for all others.

Weakness:

The 928 is a reliable car, as long as you are aware of its weaknesses. The timing belt and water pump are the main achilles' heels of this creature. They should be replaced at about every 35K miles or so. Do so and the car will be reliable. The car is also prone to many electrical gremlins that will only be an annoyance since the engine elecricals tend to be quite reliable. The factory sound systems also leave room for improvement, but that is a question of preference, and if nothing else have enough versatility for a good custom system for those who care. The air conditioning is not arctic by any means, but will cool sufficiently. Considering that I was looking for a convertible 911 when I got my 928, I do not like that the car is not available in convertible and the sunroof is more like a mail slot. All in all, the virtues of

The description at the head of the page is kind of misleading. Engine sizes varied from 4.5 lters at introduction, to the final size of 5.4 liters. All are great cars in their own ways, however a little quirky and more expensive to repair than most. If you are a person who enjoys driving and appreciates engineering, the 928 is tops on both counts. The comfort and veratility of the car are features not normally asociated with Porsches, but the performance of the car is nothing less than Porsche. Not a family car by any means, but an outstanding touring car!

corvettes might be the closest comparison outside of ferrari. Porsche trounces them both with the 928. The cost of maintenance is better than ferrari while the ride is better than either. My height makes the 928 comfort unbeatable by comparison to the two, and the ride quality beats them both.

Strength:

Rare (only 300 USA model 928 GTS's); POWERFUL 350HP, 370 lb-ft; sleek and modern looking (even the original 1978 car of the year still looks GREAT); and a value unseen in most Porsche's especially considering the performance.

Weakness:

Early cars are so cheap that many people buy them and let them go and it reflects poorly on all 928's. They can be expensive to maintain, but do not have to be.

I have SIX 928's and have driven ALL of the major models of 928, and the 1994 GTS to which I am refering here is THE BEST of them all. The automatic version is a GREAT touring car and also works well as a drivers education track car. It looks so modern people ask me if it is the NEW Porsche. Even my 1988 S4 (an even GREATER value) gets attention and people ask if it is new. These cars were the top of the Porsche line and considered the flagship Porsche from the time they were introduced. The early cars can be had for VERY LITTLE money, but if they are not in EXCELLENT condition in and out as well as mechanically they can EAT YOU ALIVE on repairs! If you ever consider buying a 928 have a 928 SPECIFIC mechanic look at it. Most "Porsche" mechanics have NO IDEA what to look for on a 928.

Obviously, since I have SIX of them, I love these cars. They meet my needs perfectly, and I can not tell you how many 911's I have HUMBLED on the race track (even with my automatic transmission cars). Consider the price of an S4 and it is hard to say no (you can get a REALLY nice S4 for less than $20k, they were OVER $70k new, 50% more than a 911 of the same year, are FASTER AND QUICKER than the 911, and are 10% or greater LESS expensive used).

If you are looking for exclusivity and the latest design and final iteration of the 928 go for a GTS. Less than 300 ever built between 93 and 95 for the US market (other markets got the GTS as a 92), and still a timeless design that will hit 60 mph in 5.6 sec, do the 1/4 mile in less than 14 sec, and top out at about 180, and you can see that very few cars even today can beat that, and almost NONE of them for the $38k you can expect to start seeing GTS's for. To get a 94-95 GTS that still looks and smells new you will need about $45k, but compare that to the 996 (which you can still wipe out) and you can see what a bargin these cars really are!

Remember that this car was designed originally as a touring car, but works GREAT as a sports car as well. One of the other things I like about all 928's is that you are unlikely to see your car going the other direction on the road. GREAT performance, exclusivity, beauty, and modern amenities (especially when you consider the design goes all the way back to 1971 and was basically unchanged), and a value that can't be touched and how can you resist. Bolt a rear muffler by pass pipe on the last section of exhaust on your 1986 or newer 928 and you will hear one of the most beautiful sounding engines this side of a 360 Modena at 8000 rpm!

Strength:

Ride and handling: the car is extremely stable at any speed and is very forgiving; unless the driver suffers from a severe lack of judgment, you will never reach its limits.

Timeless design: revolutionary compared to the boxy designs of the late 70s, early 80s, it looked good then and it looks good now.

Comfort: the car was meant to cover great distances fast without fatiguing the driver and passenger, and it delivers.

Weakness:

Quality of interior: the materials used for the interior are not of the same quality that is apparent in the rest of the car, resulting in more "warpage", cracking and fading than one would suspect.

State of many older 928s: early models are available for ridiculously low prices, attracting a group of buyers who cannot afford to keep the car in even a decent state. The 928 was Porsche's flagship product for a long time and is best viewed as a somewhat overengineered system consisting on expensive German parts, rather than just "a car". Consequently, many older 928s are not maintained properly and can easily demand as much as the purchase price in order to restore it into a decent condition.

I have owned my 1980 928 for 8 years and used it as a daily driver. In addition to a very balanced car in all respects, I find it a practical car as well. The 928 certainly seems to enjoy a 5 hour drive to the mountains better than a 5 minute ride to the grocery store, but with it's hatchback it performs just fine in that area too. Heck, it serves as the annual Xmas tree transporter, with its rear sears folding down and a tree sticking out of the back. But it's ready for a long, spirited drive as soon as the pine needles are removed. Try that with any other GT.

Given that the car is almost 21 years old, one expects things to break and they do. Weak points seem to be the AC, electrical system and interior. The drivetrain is virtually indestructible.

Strength:

It is the single most capable car I have ever owned or operated. The sheer luxury combined with the performance is in an unequalled class. Many have compared it agianst the Corvettes and the 911 types. Not even close. If you want a go cart with a lot of torque, get a 911. If you have no desire or interest in quality, get a vette.

Weakness:

It does require regular maintainance. The timing belt and water pump MUST be replaced at regular timely intervals. I am not certain that this is even a weakness. I see it as a qualifier. Don't buy one if you dont intend to take care of it. It would be a shame to let an example of such a world class car end up on cinder blocks in your front yard.

A truly extrordinary product of automotive excellence. strongly recommend those of you who have always wanted an 928 to get one. They are in limited quantity with years ranging from 1978 to 1995. Be very picky about the one you buy, it will bring you the most in either pain or pleasure depending on your descretion. if you don't even know what a 928 is, you probably would be happier with the generic 911 or other common sports car type.

This is a magnificent car! Real power, easy to handle, very fast. It makes the owner feel proud to move in such a car. It's unbelievable how this car behaves at speeds like 250 kmh on the motorway. Super !!!!

Weakness:

There are a lot of things that do break when cars age. So the 928 has it's share as well. A lot of things qualify as minor repairs however. The back seats are... oke for a 12 year old... or to put your gloves there...

I would recommend this car. Cheap to get, but make sure you are not buying a project car that will drain all your resources. Repairs can get very expensive. And fuel economics? Well... don't ask. This care has 320 Hp, 1600 Kgs, and accellerates fast. So it does take a bit of fuel. Anyway:
This is definitely the car for me. It's a joy to drive EVERY TIME.

This car is a pleasure to drive at any speed, and it WILL accommodate whatever your right foot demands of it! Handling at first may be heavy to some, especially if you are used to a fingertip feel and don't really want to know what the road is doing under you. But ask it to do something and it will take you there in a heartbeat.

Weakness:

Once you understand that anything of quality requires attention and maintenance, this car settles in nicely, however, expect to spend about $3-5k if you are buying privately and don't have it looked at by a reputable pre-purchase mechanic. Don't automatically expect a dealer to know this car as it was/is n't a priority in sales,

Since they are all used cars, if you are looking for spectacular understated performance, this car should be on your short list! I stumbled on mine after looking for a loaded mid-sized sedan; it was half the cost and a gazillion times the fun. (I drove a 1978 version way back and it never left my mind- just happened to be in the right place at the right time.)
Additionally the support online for this car is as good as the ride itself!

Its a luxury/GT and Sports car all in one. whether you want to laze down the highway at 100kph or power on at ludicrous speeds the car responds without any hint of resistance. Its cornering capabilities are amazing and the ride quality is exceptional esp in highway conditions

Weakness:

Servicing and repairs as with all exotics is expensive. Be warned

The 928 is under appreciated which means your going to get the car for almost nothing. So performance for the dollar is again unmatched, but if you can only just afford this car and can't afford regular expensive servicing then don't buy this car. I would recommend this car to anyone looking for a truly classic exotic.

Strength:

The 928 is a luxury performance coupe. Pretty vague, right? Well, let me elaborate. Luxury means that sitting position is very comfortable, soft, but firm sport seats. Plenty elbow and leg room, good visibility, and great support. I love the instrument cluster and overall interior practicality. I have yet to see a more original body on any current production car. In fact, if you take a close look at some of today's performance machines, much has been borrowed from the 928. A stock 928 powerplant in good tune provides enough power to embarass most of current import and domestic V8 sports cars. Keep in mind that performance testing 10 or 13 years ago was done with the technology available at that time. Tires, lubricants, plugs, etc. 0-60 in 5.5 or 5.7 is not bad, but I've done better. Handeling may not be the most precise, but it more than makes up in balance and predictability. This 3600lb cruiser is awsome stable at high speeds. I'm partial to the 5spd because it gives a sporty feeling when driving and are a lot more difficult to find. If you're looking for something unique and a great head turner, this may be it.

Weakness:

There are really no weaknesses, but only high performance auto costs. One has to expect to maintain this machine like any other "exotic". Every auto has a purpose. Obviously the Porsche 928 purpose is different from a Saturn.

As long as proper maintenance has been performed by a 928 specialist, there is nothing to worry about. It's simple. As the models progressed(S, S4, GT, GTS), performance increased. Value is great for enjoyment and pride of ownership.

I love this car because to my opinion is much better car than the air cooled 911. I can predict the price on the used 928 will go up when 911 fans find out that the 911s are no longer air cooled. Hey the 928 was the top of the line Porsche and the car of the year. The 928 is a movie star in such films as 007, Risky business, Scar Face, and wierd science. Power, Comfort, looks, and class, That's the kinda man a woman looks for.

Weakness:

Eats too much gas and parts are expensive but who cares. Kinda like a pretty girl.

The 928 is alot of car for the money. It's as fast as a Ferrari as reliable as a MB and as comfortable as Cadilac. I recomend driving it on a Sunday and have another every day car on the Side.
