928S
Strength:
Power, acceleration, handling: incredible change in character on high speed roads from a heavy car in city traffic to a nimble sports car on the highway at speed.
Weakness:
Expensive to maintain properly; it gets to a point where money spent will not be recouperated because the market value of these cars are so low these days and unlikely to appreciate in the near future. Bad investment but fun toy. Aluminum hood, fenders, doors may make later body work difficult but not impossible if you can find the right body shop. An absolutely fabulous and prestige toy for the one who has more than one car and can afford to maintain this car properly. A stylistic icon that will never become "dated". A poorly maintained 928 brings shame to the owner. If you are thinking of buying one previously owned, make sure you have a Porsche trained technician to go over the car before purchase. After purchase, only service through Porsche trained technicians (not dealers...too expensive). There seems to be a stronger following of these cars in the US than here. I sold my perfectly maintain specimen a few years back and am waiting for a smaller, more nimble roadster. The 928 is a big and HEAVY car! But what a beauty and commands a presence that rivals other exotics. Then there's the unmistakable 928 exhaust note from the V-8! |

928S
Strength:
This car is powerful, period. Also its relative unpopularity compared to 911s makes this one of the more affordable and unique Porsches on the road. The rear seats are actually usable. The engine roar is music to the ears, rivaling even the deep growl of an Alfa 164. This car is a very low-slung, aerodynamic, real Porsche. Forget the critics' complaint of the 928 being inferior to the 911 - the front-engined 928 is every bit as deserving of praise. And it has more interior storage space to boot.
Weakness:
One word: repairs. While the 928S is a great car, if and when it does fail for whatever reason, expect repair bills to be very high. The air-conditioner failed in my 928 more than once, unfortunately out-of-warranty. We took the car to a standard repair shop rather than the authorized Porsche center, because repair costs are unbelievable, especially in Hong Kong. Be careful of the engine temperature as well, especially in hot weather and crawling traffic. The battery died once while my 928S was inching along a local highway in summer, with the air-conditioner at full. The car had to be towed and the battery recharged. In Hong Kong, at least, the 928 came in several versions, including the standard 928, S, S4, and the GT. Nowadays 928s are a rare sight on Hong Kong roads - even I sold my car which I've owned for nearly 2 decades a few years ago. The repair and parking costs (unlike Americans, we in Asia do not have the luxury of living in houses with a large driveway) weren't worth it. In addition, the scarcity of high-speed freeways in Hong Kong relegated my car to 90% stop-and-go traffic, which is very bad for the engine. I sold my car for nearly scrap. In the U.S. however, the situation is slightly different. One could own a 928 and drive it only on weekends, and on nice, curvy country roads or on a long-distance highway. In this case, I highly recommend the 928 as a fabulous addition to your stable. Just do not purchase a 928 as your main vehicle. Similar Products Used: no similar 2-door sports cars. / 928S
Strength:
Great looks, inexpensive for an 80's model, it is fun to work on, and has the best control of any car I have had.
Weakness:
A few electrical problems is the only weakness I can say I have had but they are easily repairable with some automotive knowledge. I would recommend this car to anyone interetsted in a sports car, especially a Porsche. It is easier to work on than most older 911's and such because you don't have to adjust valves ever, and you don't even have to remove the engine to work on it. Make sure that you inspect the timing belt and change it every 30,000 miles or so (it is very inexpensive.) You should either want to fix the car yourself or find someone who can because dealerships will charge way to much for any maintanence. Get any parts from Devek.com and you will pay excellent prices and get original Porsche parts. Similar Products Used: Stealth R/T Twin Turbo |

Power, Comfort, Solid Ride for a lot of miles
Weakness:
Odometers quit or become erratic after 100K. Water Pump problems after 75K. Dash cracks after 60K. A/C control problems after 80K. I have had 4 928s. Two 80', one 84' and one 83'. There is not another car I would buy that has the comfort and power (automatic) of these cars. They are truly unappreciated in the USA. The price you pay will probably be too much if it is a new one. The quit making them in 95. When it depreciates to around 20K, buy it if it has less than 50K miles. It will turn more heads than a tennis tournament. The price you pay in repairs may drive you away, but what a car. Puts a Corvette to shame. Similar Products Used: Nissian 300Z |

928s4
Strength:
The 928s4 was the first Porsche to be equipped with anti-lock brake system, which in the case of the 928 is a great thing. The car also has the weisbach axle system which helps the car in cornering. The 928s4 is also very forgiving in it's nature. The nature of the car is to be driven long distance at high rates of speed while maintaing both a high level of comfort and agility a rare quality in most of today's cars. The car allows for a comfortable ride and superb handeling. I have been pleased with this vehicle (which means alot from a shop owner) The maintenance is pretty straight forward and normal in my book and if maintained shall result in years of enjoyment.
Weakness:
There are few weakness to list. One weakness of the 928 is the lack of trunk space. This 928s4 has given me the normal problems associated with a car that is 14 years old and was barely driven in the first 10 years by the first owner. The car had only 25,000 miles when purchased so it had some dry rot in the seals and belts. Once this was overcome with somewhat expensive repairs the car was perfect and has given no troubles since then. Regular maintenace and following the manual recomendations is a must for this vehicle to maintain it in the low cost repair. The 86.5 is equiped with abs. and it is as fast or faster than any car on the road.I love this car.
Weakness:
little cram for four adult but hey its a porsche. I have had this car almost 3 years and I have not had any problems with it. Parts are a bit exspensive at the car dealer but you can find parts on the internet a little cheaper. For a car that is 15 years old it still can hang with the best and not look out of place. Strength:
Acceleration, looks and handling. Sounds like a Porsche-must be a Porsche!!
Weakness:
The only negative is that OCCASIONLY the shifting is a little rough and has a very small oil leak. Absolutely the most awesome car on the road. Like being on Space Mountain at Disneyworld every time I drive it. A rocket ship on wheels. A real headturner. All I've heard is what a high maintenance nightmare this would be,well, I'm here to say that after putting over 15K on it,I've done just two things-Brake pads and oil changes.Best purchase I've ever made in my life. It is funny how everyone wants to race-especially these kids in their souped up Honda's.However, when you own a Porsche it's the other guy who has something to prove. I just let 'em all go by. Had it sold once, but didn't have the heart to go through with it, so I guess it's mine for good. Similar Products Used: Have owned a 944 Turbo and a regular 944. Doesn't handle quite as well, but the power is more apparent, due to turbo lag of 944. |

Strength:
Wide stance, superior handling and long haul comfort are exemplary. Looks like an extra-terrestrial shark with wheels. Too sexy! I don't even think that the E-Jag touches it!
Weakness:
I have had a history of electrical problems. Mostly corrosion and relay problems. I wanted a 928 from the first time I saw one flash by me on the highway back in the 80s. After many years I thought that it was just an apparition or terrestrial UFO. Apperently, only an average of 4700 were produced each year. Similar Products Used: I test drove a Boxster yesterday. It's a nice car, but I didn't fall in love. :~( I fell in love with the 928!! |

Strength:
Fantastic handling, sleek looks. This car even sounds impressive. Funny thing is, no one would ever know how little I paid for it! Every punk in a Camaro, 'Vette and Asian muscle-car wanna-be cranes his neck to look at it. It seems everyone wants to race me. No need to prove anything (it's more fun to irritate them by not racing).
Weakness:
Occassional rattles (hey, it's 16 years old) but nothing loud. Expensive replacement parts (when needed). A fantastic car that turns heads. A dream to drive on the highway! Similar Products Used: Nothing compares. |
