Porsche 928 (1995 and older) Sports

Porsche 928 (1995 and older) Sports

DESCRIPTION

The Porsche 928 was a sports-GT car sold by Porsche AG of Germany from 1978 to 1995. The 928 featured a large, front-mounted and water-cooled V8 engine driving the rear wheels. The original 4.5L V8 engine featured a single overhead camshaft design, it produced 219 hp. Porsche upgraded the engine from mechanical to electronic fuel injection in 1980 for US models.

Porsche utilized a transaxle in the 928 to help achieve 50/50 front/rear weight distribution, aiding the car's balance. Although it weighed more than the difficult-to-handle 911, its more neutral weight balance and higher power output gave it similar performance on the track.

The body was mainly galvanized steel, but the doors, front fenders, and hood were aluminum in order to make the car more lightweight. It had a substantial luggage area accessed via a large hatchback. The new polyurethane elastic bumpers were integrated into the nose and tail and covered in body-coloured plastic; an unusual feature for the time that aided the car visually and reduced its drag.

You should see the face of driver after I smoked his brand new Boxter at the red light. I bet he his thinking how can a 80s car with 1/5 price of a new boxter be gone under 6 sec. And you should also see the face of a 911 driver after watching me loading my 10 speed bike into the the car from the rear hatch.

Weakness:

Too many young kids wana race you and get very mad after losing. uses too much gas but still better than SUV's. Expensive parts but ok prices on the Internet.

This is the James Dean of all cars.

This is to me the ultimate car. Technically interesting design, comfortable, quick, and built to the highest quality standards. And then the sound. Rumor of maintainence expences keep prces down.

Weakness:

Can be expensive to repair, but will not break down if kept properly. Make sure to buy a good one.

Just holding the key in my hand, makes me smile. It's such a good feeling the combination of class, comfort, power, style and quality.

Great looking car that has all the power that it's appearance promises. Comfortable and well appointed this car was a classic the day it came out of Stuttegart and will continue to turn heads. This car is the physical manifestation of the Porsche cachet. It is an honor to own and drive this vehicle. It is the apex of the car deisgners skill and art.

Weakness:

Gas mileage, but a small price to pay.

I would highly recommend this car to the enthusiast.

Strength:

Power, balance, interior comfort. Very strong car (with or without the many modifications, both inexpensive and costly), that is very forgiving when pushed to the limit. Very comfortable for two, and serviceable for four for short distances/times. Can be loaded for a 10 day trip for two, and still have room to recline the seat for sleep. The cabin ergonomics are well thought out.

Weakness:

Not much that I can think of. It's expensive to maintain, but then again when you replace the brakes you wont be doing it again for a good long time, so who cares?

I would heartily recommend it. You will find that there is a 928 for everyone, at every budget. Just look, drive, and explore your options. This car can be a daily driver easily (mine is now), but I prefer it as a second car. I like to keep it clean and I find that the role of a daily driver involves too much general maintenance. But, that could be true of any car.

They are relatively straightforward to perform your own maintenance, especially things like oil, brakes, plugs, etc. If you dive into more complicated things like timing belt and water pump, you will be challenged but not overwhelmed.

If you are on more of a budget stick to the older 16 valve cars that offer less expensive repairs, and more room in the engine bay to work on them yourself.

If you can afford it, the 1989 and higher S4's benefit from better rear end gearing and intake systems. The chip upgrades, exhaust upgrades, and so forth, offer the ability to surpass the 928 GTS power output in a much more affordable packages.

See http://www.928gt.com for parts, accesories, tips, dyno information and complete specs right online. I'm not affiliated with them, but do shop with them. And I use the online specs and tips. Just take a look.

Strength:

Tons of power whenever you want it.
Comfortable driving with a sport feel.
Heavy car that hugs the road and handles well at all speeds

Weakness:

Cost a fortune to fix when it breaks.
Not a quiet car.

I bought the car with what I thought was a good look but ended up putting $1500 to repalce the timming belt and other parts after just two weeks. You really need a person with experience in 928s to give a look before buying. Condition and especially maintenance will make a big difference price for comparable models.

A premiere high-end sports car with all the power anyone will want. Comfort not sacrificed and it is loaded with all the luxury options you would expect from a Mercedes, a great touring car. You get the power and performance of the best sports car without that small car feel common in many sports cars. I have had it to 140mph and it still has room to go with no loss of control. This is an expensive car to fix and there are few mechanics familiar with the engine. This is not a car for a person on a limited budget. Count on repairs running over $1000 at a time for any major item. This is a good car for an experience mechanic who wants the challenge of one of the best but most complicated machines ever made. There is a good owner support base that is great in providing technical support and assistance.

Strength:

Well balanced, powerful, great handling, timeless design, well constructed, and fairly easy to access and work on most items not in the engine bay.

Weakness:

Engine bay access is very tight. Cost of replacement parts are more expensive than on most other cars, but they tend to be more robust. Because of all of the creature comforts and the steel used in the frame, the 928 is rather heavy.

Absolutely.

The 928 was once considered by the Automotive press to be the best GT ever made. I can understand why some of them thought that to be true. No other GT that I've driven to date compares to the 928GT.

Strength:

The 928 S4 is a unique blend of style, performance and comfortable ride - ideal for long and fast trips! The interior can either seat up to 4 smaller adults, or accommodate 2 tall adults and a lot of luggage - thanks to fold down rear seats. The body is made of a combination of galvanized steel and aluminum doors, fenders and hoods, so it is absolutely rust free. If well maintained, the car is very reliable in everyday use, while it can easily outperform almost any other vehicle on the road. I prefer the automatic transmission made by Mercedes Benz, as it shifts smooth and quick. A manual '91 GT I had owned prior to this one was the fastest car I have ever driven!

Weakness:

Don't let your neighborhood mechanic touch it! These cars need quality maintenance! Not often, but done right. In fact, they only need fresh oil and a small checkup every 15k miles! However, by the time a 928 reaches 60k miles, the following items need attention:
- Timing belt and water pump (replace and retension after 2500 miles!)
- Front and rear shocks (replace when the car shows signs of getting bouncy - for your own safety!)
- Motor mounts (check and replace, if necessary)
Other things that might cause trouble over time are the heater valve, vacuum lines, knock sensors, idle regulator, oil pan or valve cover gaskets, transmission oil seals, and the freon lines to the rear AC.
Before buying a 928, have a mechanic with 928 experience check it thoroughly. Go to http://www.eatel.net/~dslabat/mech.htm to locate a mechanic near you!

The 928 is a great investment! Low depreciation saves enough cost to pay a reputable mechanic to keep the mechanics in top shape. Bottom line is a supercar for the cost of a new but boring middle class sedan.
The 928 is more complicated than a Toyota Camry, and needs to be maintained accordingly. If you keep that in mind you're going to have a ton of fun!

I have owned three 928s, and must say they were all phenomenal! The next best car I've ever owned was a Mazda RX-7 - a newer design that copied lots of the 928-Innovations, like the passively steering Weissach rear axle. However, the RX-7 had less power, guzzled more gas, had a less comfortable ride, and gave me and my mechanic quite some headaches. You get what you pay for!

Strength:

Drivetrain on this vehicle is bullet proof. 32 valve, 4 cam, 5.0 liter aluminum block engine produces 288 hp and 302 ft/lbs of torque. A Mercedes built 4-speed automatic transmision puts the the power to the wheels. This vehicle has impeccable manners at high speeds. Ride is great whether in stop-and-go traffic or cruising the open road. The luggage capacity is outstanding for a true GT car. Two people, two sets of golf clubs, and two pullman size suitcases= NO problem. Try that in a 'Vette or a 911.And you get to your destination fresh, not road road weary. This car's styling is ageless, and still draws attention wherever it goes.

Weakness:

Nearly impossible to work on, and lack of 928 qualified mechanics to work on it. You MUST pay attention to timing belt tension, as the 32 valve engine is an interference motor, and any timing timing miscues can lead to an engine rebuild more expensive than the value of the car. Having the wheels aligned is very tricky due to lack of knowledge by owners/techs. Some replacement parts are insanely expensive, but most all parts are available.Steers like truck in city traffic.

This car is not a stop light racer, but 0-60 in 6.2 secs. is quick enough to take care of most problems. 4 piston Brembos w/ABS all around will stop you in a BIG hurry. A 150 MPH top end should satisfy most urges. You can get quicker cars, you can get faster cars, you can get more luxurious cars, and you can get cars that handle better, BUT you would have to get a separate car for each one of these traits. There is no better combination of all of the above, plus affordability, than the Porsche 928. A person should be able to purchase an '86 928 with 60K miles on it for around $10K. I think it its the best value on the planet.

The 928 Porsche is a well engineered automobile with a build quality second to none. More Comfort, Power and Better handling then most exotic cars at twice the price.

Weakness:

If you don't plan on working on the car yourself, Be sure you can find a reputable 928 Porsche mechanic. Beware not many Porsche mechanics have what it takes to work on a true Porsche exotic like the 928. NOT EVEN AT THE DEALERSHIPS !! These cars are not for the weak hearted and shallow pocket book. "just kidding" If you find the right outlet, The parts are not that much more expensive then a late model corvette.

This is my first 928 but my third Porsche. I like the fact that the 928 was designed by Porsche for Porsche not like some of the other models.
In my opinion the 928 is faster, Better built then most all american and jap made cars. With the right mechanic and with maintance performed as per the factory recommendations the 928 can be a reliable fun automobile that will be around long past those cheaply designed and produced want-a-be sports cars.
Development of the 928 began in 1971. In 1978 an all-aluminum 4.5 liter 16-valve SOHC V8 219@5250 designed by Porsche. The 928 has a weight balance of almost 50/50 front to rear. 1978 base price $28,500.00. The last 928 1995 GTS 5.4 Liter 32 valve DOHC V8 345HP@5700rpm. 1995 base Price: $80,920.00 .

Absolutely one of the finest GT cars ever built. Excellent road manners, very comfortable interior, accelerates very hard and stops equally as well. Average 23+ mpg on long trips.

Weakness:

Can be expensive to maintain. If something breaks it is best to get it fixed right away. Competent 928 mechanics difficult to find, a lot of the services are 928 specific.

Highly reccomended, a great sports/GT car. Probably the best performance available for the money right now. These are underpriced considering the quality and engineering that is built into them.

Closest thing that I have driven to compare it to is the BMW 750il. Although a different type of car the German heritage is apparent.
