Porsche 928 (1995 and older) Sports

DESCRIPTION

The Porsche 928 was a sports-GT car sold by Porsche AG of Germany from 1978 to 1995. The 928 featured a large, front-mounted and water-cooled V8 engine driving the rear wheels. The original 4.5L V8 engine featured a single overhead camshaft design, it produced 219 hp. Porsche upgraded the engine from mechanical to electronic fuel injection in 1980 for US models.

Porsche utilized a transaxle in the 928 to help achieve 50/50 front/rear weight distribution, aiding the car's balance. Although it weighed more than the difficult-to-handle 911, its more neutral weight balance and higher power output gave it similar performance on the track.

The body was mainly galvanized steel, but the doors, front fenders, and hood were aluminum in order to make the car more lightweight. It had a substantial luggage area accessed via a large hatchback. The new polyurethane elastic bumpers were integrated into the nose and tail and covered in body-coloured plastic; an unusual feature for the time that aided the car visually and reduced its drag.

An extremely undervalued automobile. The Porsche 928 is unquestionably the greatest GT car extant of the 20th century. GT performance and the extremes of sports car handling. Among being the most copied car in the world there are few cars that can claim to acheive 928 excellance. Driving this car fast (above 125mph)is among the, frankly demure and graceful, and the most thrilling experiences of a lifetime becuase if not for the speedometer you wouldn't know you were going that fast! At high speed and whipped into corners the Porsche 928 provide impecable manners and idiot proof control. Aside from being a rare super car (less than 20,000 cars for the 18 year US market) it offers rare handling and performance, especially for todays market price

Weakness:

Few. The car can be expensive to maintain if the routine maintenance is not done, however, the mean time between repairs can be broad since this car is relatively "bulletproof" and rarely breaks, making a rather reliable car. Not many cars 15+ years old can offer the timeless looks of a Porsche 928 and the performance with low maintenance requirements.

Don't the rear and mid engined biased critics fool you, the 928 was a car ahead of it time and I would highly recommend it as a Super Car that delivers loads of excitement, and offered the creature comforts then (in the 80's) that high cars are only just beginning to offer in 2001 cars, i.e. Heated leather seats, separate A/C zones and controls for front and rear passengers, and performance braking that is standard today only on high end performance cars, to name only a few. As a stock car you can drive it to the track and race the car with few modifications and and drive it home when your done and 911 drivers will hate you everytime you pass them on the track 930 turbo drivers will yield respect if they never had a chance to spool up their turbos against a 928 32valve normally aspirated 5.0 liter V8 engine. Corvette's get a humble pie lesson. Make no mistake about it the 928 is hard to touch and the one to beat. It will be along time before another car comes along that is as great and when it does the price will be astronomical and in rare form.

Compare. Most other are simply bad copies and the list of things copied from the 928 is VERY LONG! From the engine and suspension to the 928's timeless body styling the car has few competitors during the years it was produced.

I would have to say that I wasnt even looking for a car when I first saw my burgundy 1984 928S. At ignition I was sold. The sound of the exhaust foretold the power that was to come. The sleek lines of the 928 are timeless. Everyone always ask what year is it. I just say its's a porche, what does it matter.

Weakness:

The transmission went out on me the third week I had it. No problem I plan on keeping this jewel for a long time.

In summary I would say if you want a timeless classic world renowned sportscar 928 it the only way to go period.

We jumped ou at first bu then right around the 140 mark the 928 shark with ac running went by us as if we were standing still. German engineering does it come in better.

Strength:

Strong as an ox. Fast. Beautiful. Comfortable.

Weakness:

There is nothing weak about it. But it is expensive. Eveything about it is expensive. Leather dash shrinks up. Seems to go through back tires something fierce. Hmmmm. Little leaky, but I am too.

The thing was bullet-proof for years. Nothing like it. I drove it very hard, and it just asked for more. The car is just amazing. I love rattling friends glassware, and setting off motion detectors in parking ramps. Back in '86 when I bought it, I described it as an rocket that felt like an Eldo. Very confortable. There are a lot of fast cars out now, but then the 928 was it. Amazingly misunderstood car. I cannot fathom why the glorified VW group would enjoy those over a 928. It is incredibly well screwed together, and still looks like it's going a hundred standing still. If you want to just go fast, there are cheaper options. If you want to own the finest engineered production vehicle to date, this is it. I recently did a complete on the paint after stripping it. I figured it didn't owe me a thing at this point, and I still love it so why not? I spent more than the car is worth, but I just don't care. It's now a flawless Gards Red, and is in better shape than it was 150,000K ago. I have stopped beating it to death. But it likes some punishment once in a while...

I have to believe that some day the 928 will be rediscovered and prices will climb. Meanwhile I may buy another just for giggles.

The 928 has always been awesome. I wanted one since the beginning. Ended up selling them for a living and was even more impressed. Bought a '78 in '86 and put well over 100,000k on it. Back then, it rarely broke, and I drove the living crap out of it. Clutch, ball joints, exhaust, alternator, tires, tires, tires, timimg belt. Launched a fan blade through the radiator...bad water pump. That's about it.

Oh the power! The interior of my car is unlike any other 928 I have ever seen! Full leather and Revlon Red and I mean RED! It took some getting used to but it grew on me.

Weakness:

Oh yes (just like every one else here) the repairs. Just this year I replaced the altenator 450.00 part only, the raidiator 996.00 also part only. I preformed the labor myself. My car consumes 9 quarts of Mobil One synthenic (X 5.00 per quart,=45.00)

This car and I did a 354 mile drive (Dallas to San Antonio, Texas) in 2hrs and 47 min. Without any stops for gas and the engine stayed cool as a cucumber! We blew past 2 Texas State Officers as speeds over 155 mph and they did not even put their cars in to Drive. Wow what a car!

Strength:

1.) STYLE - After bolting on a set of 18' Millie Miglia's, I turn every head I pass. It looks almost like people are doing "the wave" when I go by. 2.) PERFORMANCE - From the the way this car accelerates to the way it corners, it is a dream to drive. This 1980S Euro was factory equipped with an all alluminum 4.7L engine that produces 310HP on command, which is well over the american models that came with 240HP. Yes there are cars that are faster, and there are cars that handle better. But try driving one of those cars across country like I have my 928SE. Not to mention, This car came factory with adjustable coil-overs. I love this option! 3. - SUPERIOR CRAFTSMANSHIP. Porsche, known for true performance sportscars, really went out on the plush interior on the 928 line. Everything is leather not plastic. Giving it that really exotic, yet comfortable feel. 4.) And finally, what I like most about my 928SE is this, I CAN TURN HEADS ANYWHERE I GO. Everyone wishes they had a car like mine. I get complements daily, and smiles from the ladies on a regular basis. All this, for the price of a used 92 Honda. Which one would you rather drive??

Weakness:

1.) GAS MILAGE - I think I speak for all Porsche enthusiasts when I say "Who gives a squat~??" When you own a 928, you give her anything she needs. You would never catch me giving my car regular unleaded. She gets only the best! Even at $2.00 a gallon. 2.) EXPENSIVE PARTS - Again I say "Who gives a Squat~??" Have you priced a center console for a 80' Corvette lately? Nothing worth having comes cheap. I mean lets face it... It is a P-O-R-S-C-H-E. The name itself sounds expensive. My suggestion for all the "belly-achers" out there crying over the $1000.00 dash they just bought, is this, "If you can't afford a Porsche... Don't buy a Porsche." But if have the means, and you want something that only few have, then remember this.......

If you want honest to goodness perfection and performance.. BUY A PORSCHE~!!

Extremely sexy, powerful, state of the art engineering made from the highest quality materials available. Head turner, rare. How about the rear sun visors, leather everywhere, speed sensitive steering and masculine sound of exhaust.

Weakness:

Electrical system, dashboard lights comes on and off once in a while. Normally overheats in stop and go traffic. Recommend to install manual switch for cooling fan. (I wired it separately manually, connected with the fog lights. Works much better)

Owned for 4 years, mechanically reliable with routine preventive maintenance. Recommend 245/45/ZR16 tires. Stickier, looks much better. Too sexy for a daily driver in Seattle with all the rains. Better vision? I replaced my headlights with Hella H-4's with blue vision bulbs. Looks great! 160,000 miles. Runs strong, looks great. Outstanding fit and finish, still original paint job! Gold/bronze rims. I cannot explain to you the way I feel when I am driving this shark! Take care of it, needs a lot of loving. Happy Motoring.

Strength:

I've owned so many sports and touring cars it's hard to remember , but none of them holds the road as well as my 928 gts does.
The interior it's craftsman's masterpiece(even dashboard and roofliner all made out of real leather)
928 GTS has porent V8 with 32 valves what delivers 350 hp , performance of this car is far better than most of nowadays tourers , and sports ones.
You can take it for a ride to your ount's garden party , or race it in Imola.

Weakness:

It takes oil ,

I "ve bought my GTS damaged(body damage) from the first owner , car had 107000 km and was regurally maintenanced .
Cost to repair was not the smallest , but finally i spent less than 20.000 usd for my shark , tooday the car is in great condition , but if you drive sharp as I do it needs money to be put in continously .

Looks - nothing looks or feels and drives better. Super quiet at high speeds. Like sitting in the cockpit of a modern fighter plane. Just plain fun to drive. Always a head turner. Later models hold prices pretty well. LOOKS LOOKS LOOKS! If it weren't for that, you couldn't give me one.

Weakness:

Electrical failures, mystery brake failures, Mystery erratic idle problems, extremely hard to work on (I have many years of serious car and boat mechanical repair experience) Try to find a mechanic that won't: Rip you off- keep the car forever- never get the problem completely solved - OR can even do the required work! Parts are outrageously expensive - rare aftermarket parts - almost all dealer. Almost impossible to make it run cool in the summertime. AC system is adequate when it works- which is almost never. Thank God for places like Devek - 928 Int. and 928 Specialists ( good folks to deal with) I have owned 3 clean 928s and they are ALL relatively unreliable. Don't even think about one as anything but an exotic 2nd car toy. Expensive compared to an American luxury car.

I've owned 25-30 cars over a 40 year period, of every type immagineable, Vettes, rice burners, Ferrari, Jaguar, Trans-Am, Zimmer, Lincolns Caddys and more. With the exception of my Jag - I must say that the 928 has had more expensive, unexpected, mystery, 'one of a kind problems than all the rest combined. Fortunately, I can afford the 'sticker shock' bills. Based on looks and ride- I would give it 5 stars- but from there on, it goes downhill. Have 2 cars, lots of discretionary$ and a brother in law who is a certified factory trained 928 mechanic and you will be super satisfied.

Strength:

Strong handling, superb acceleration in 2nd,3rd, and 4th gears. Heavy construction, well-made and fit to form.

Weakness:

Repairs are costly, and I have to constantly re-invigorate my full burgundy leather interior to keep it from cracking. Even with all the high performance lubricants in the crankcase, rear diff and bearings, the gas mileage is a paltry 15-17 mpg.

I purchased this platinum silver metallic beauty (with 35,700 mi) in the Spring of 1988 from a private Testarossa owner. He told me that this car was the best all-round sports car in the world. After 13 years, I could not agree more!! It is absolutely the most solid, mechanically sound, high performance vehicle I've owned.

I also purchased a modified rust-colored 928S Euro (330 HP) having a straight exhaust, Bilsteins, and 4 new Bridgestones. That car had a throaty roar, extreme pep and a dangerously high capacity for excessive speed (about 170+ mph). Of course I decided having two 928s was a bit much, after all my 944 was also gathering dust. So I settled into keeping just one, my first love - my Platinum Silver Metallic 928S.

Yes, I replaced all the belts, timing gears, upgraded the suspension, added a new clutch, replaced the catalytic converter, repacked the bearings and tightened the ball joints. Oh yes, did I mention a new water pump in 1998? But this car is one of the last of its kind in the world and it is still a brilliantly shining head-turner.

I even smoked a couple of 5.0 litre Ford Mustangs for the heck of it one sunny spring afternoon. And, feeling lucky, I had the audacity to outrun a Kawasaki Ninja for just over 1-1/2 miles until he kicked it into a lower gear (now that was impressive).

Overall, these last 13 years of ownership have been a treat - the car may outlast me; it only has 63K miles.
