Porsche 928 (1995 and older) Sports

DESCRIPTION

The Porsche 928 was a sports-GT car sold by Porsche AG of Germany from 1978 to 1995. The 928 featured a large, front-mounted and water-cooled V8 engine driving the rear wheels. The original 4.5L V8 engine featured a single overhead camshaft design, it produced 219 hp. Porsche upgraded the engine from mechanical to electronic fuel injection in 1980 for US models.

Porsche utilized a transaxle in the 928 to help achieve 50/50 front/rear weight distribution, aiding the car's balance. Although it weighed more than the difficult-to-handle 911, its more neutral weight balance and higher power output gave it similar performance on the track.

The body was mainly galvanized steel, but the doors, front fenders, and hood were aluminum in order to make the car more lightweight. It had a substantial luggage area accessed via a large hatchback. The new polyurethane elastic bumpers were integrated into the nose and tail and covered in body-coloured plastic; an unusual feature for the time that aided the car visually and reduced its drag.

Strength:

Great power over 3000rpm in any gear. Not a drag racer off the line, but it'll do 120 without hitting 3500 rpm. No rust...it's aluminum.

Weakness:

Well, it is 18 years old, so some of the rubber parts (hoses, seals, etc.) should be replaced to keep everything running well. This car has aged VERY well. I'm impressed how little it shows its age.

Excellent car. I was worried that it would have huge maintenance issues being an 18 year old car, but I've not had an repair problems. I've done work on the car to maintain it such as oil changes, brake pads, etc. But nothing has happened to require a trip to a mechanic. The car gets noticed. Keeping it in 2nd gear while cruising through the town gets a lot of attention for that sweet-sounding V8....great exotic sporty sound. It's not real loud, but it rumbles enough to set off car alarms if you want to. Make sure you do your homework before buying one. Getting one that has not had it's scheduled maintenance done (timing belt, oil and other fluids) can be a problem waiting to happen. It makes drivers of NEW cars jealous! (and they're paying so much more!)

TORQUE TORQUE TORQUE! Luxurious interior, timeless beauty, and this car is a CHICK MAGNET! Good Lord!

Weakness:

I've heard that repairs can get expensive, but I've put 4K miles on this car in 3 months and have done nothing more than change the oil. Definately get the car checked out before purchasing though, because if it has been ill-maintained, it could be a nightmare.

WOW! What an amazing car! I traded my 12-second 2nd gen Eclipse GS-T for this car, and believe me, it was the best thing I've ever done. Talk about TORQUE! This car has gobs of it all throughout the powerband. Being so used to the spool-up time of turbo cars, this car feels like it's being shot out of a cannon when i drop the hammer in 1st gear. The interior is to DIE for! I bought mine with only 41K miles, and the leather still smells new. I cannot get over the quality and workmanship. It appears as if the interior is hand-assembled. I don't listen to the radio in the car much, because the throaty roar of the high displacement V8 is enough to intoxicate me even on the longest of trips. I definately rate this car a "10"!

Awesome sound, very powerful, smooth ride, hauls ass around curves with ease, still modern appearance even today.

Weakness:

Expensive parts ( Last fall, i had to replace the water pump and timing belt--- cost: over $2500, time in shop: approx. 2 months...) And I''m only 18 w/ a part- time job...

The 928 is an awesome car to own. Although the parts can be rather costly and timely, I promise you, if you test drive a good-condition 928, you''ll want to buy it. The 928 is probably the most overlooked supercar in the world.

14 years of faithfull service with 0 problems, breakdowns or unexpected maintenance. Do the oil, water pump and timing belt and your good as gold. Best car I have ever owned, bar none. No road noise even at speed. 24 MPG on the highway avg. 75 MPH is a perk. Did I mention its'' great "unique" looks? Often mistaken for a brand new whatsyoumacallit.

Weakness:

The dash will crack with age even covered and oiled. The battery access and mimi-spare location stink in pre S4 models.

2nd owner for last 14 years. Summer driver averaging about 2500 miles/yr. Very comfortable for a 6''6 driver. Great on long trips and short runs to the Golf Course alike. Added 5 spoke 285/40 series 17" wheels for much improved handeling. This car is so smooth I often have caught myself doing 80+ MPH in 3rd gear. Passes cars on the 2 lane twisters like thay are standing still. Real v8 water cooled power.. no wonder Porsche has returned to it. Find the right one and it will be the best car you have ever bought .. drastically under priced.

Strength:

For the Euro car, the engine, transaxle, and interior.

Weakness:

Needs bigger brakes and headers (and snow tires).

First foray into the 928, and only rave reviews. Searched for and bought a Euro ''84 928 with 160,000 miles. Near mint in and out (a 2+ condition, or 9 of 10), two owner with complete records and meticulous maintenance. This is the 310HP 2 valve. The key to my happiness was the previous maintenance history and long term care, I''ve changed the oil/filter and replaced the lower ball joints. The car is extremely strong and I would do this again. However, you must be patient to find one and compare many, then get lucky. I saw a lot of crap for $5-6,000. This is a keeper and it came with 17" wheels already added.

timeless design, added new 5 spoke rims people can''t tell what year it is. safe design, airborne at over 80mph and land flat without a bounce, v8 , luxury, comfort on a long trip, neutral handling 50/50 weight distribution, worlds first all wheel steer, quality that shows the longer you own it. a secret jewel in the used car world. one story, i don''t race but got caught between two camaros racing to town at 80, after the first passed i pulled out at the top of a hill, as i drove on the other car raced up behind me, i nailed the peddle to keep him behind, then as i was on the gas i caught the first car and passed him at 150 , from standing start to 150 in less than a mile.

Weakness:

owners that do not maintain there jewel.

this is my second 928,(previous 1986 32v) i have wanted a 928 since i was 12 when they first were made. after having bought my first 928 in 1994, i sold after two years because of a bad driving record(while i was LIVING MY DREAM!!!). i sold for $1000 more than i paid for it, and put over 33,000 kms on it. i still drive fast enough but drive the roads 20 to 30 over speed in stead of 40 to 100, both cars would or will do 165 mph, and i get 26mpg(imp) maintainance can be expensive but the quality of parts last long and is a value.

Styling above all else, power, comfort, performance, this car had it all.

Weakness:

Reliability, unfortunately this car broke very often and was very expensive when it did. Tires would wear pretty often, changed the first set at only 12k miles.

What a car! I bought the car in 1989 and I was in love with it. I could just go in the garage and sit in it and be happy. Mine was black on black w/custom BBS wheels and A/T. Fantastic machine and way beyond its time styling, the pinnacle of GT cars. Hated to see this one go.

Weakness:

back seats are useless for passengers,

I paid $23000 for my 928 last year. I made sure that I had a guy who KNEW porsches check it out. The car I purchased had VERY low miles on it so I lucked out. The repairs are the greatest pain! Im only seventeen and Ive been a shark lover all my life and always dreamed of getting one all my life. I have a junk car that I drive around for daily use. The key to keeping your car nice once you find a well maintained one is to fix the little things wrong so something catostrophic happens. This is NOT the car for the every day family man. Chicago just had the highest gas price in the country for gas and the mileage on this car wasn't helping me. How ever, I ocasionally park my car, walk away about 20 feet, and watch how many people drool on the paint. Most people dont what the hell it is, so they have to take a peek. I have an austrian friend who was making fun of the car, so I raced his "corvette" and blew him away. I am a car lover and once I saw and rode in this car, I couldn't take my mind off it. The engine is excellent but the rest of the car is HIGH mantinence. Overall, a chick magnet(thats how I got my girlfriend) and a race car at heart. A true porsche!
