Porsche 928 (1995 and older) Sports

DESCRIPTION

The Porsche 928 was a sports-GT car sold by Porsche AG of Germany from 1978 to 1995. The 928 featured a large, front-mounted and water-cooled V8 engine driving the rear wheels. The original 4.5L V8 engine featured a single overhead camshaft design, it produced 219 hp. Porsche upgraded the engine from mechanical to electronic fuel injection in 1980 for US models.

Porsche utilized a transaxle in the 928 to help achieve 50/50 front/rear weight distribution, aiding the car's balance. Although it weighed more than the difficult-to-handle 911, its more neutral weight balance and higher power output gave it similar performance on the track.

The body was mainly galvanized steel, but the doors, front fenders, and hood were aluminum in order to make the car more lightweight. It had a substantial luggage area accessed via a large hatchback. The new polyurethane elastic bumpers were integrated into the nose and tail and covered in body-coloured plastic; an unusual feature for the time that aided the car visually and reduced its drag.

Handling, comfort, speed, looks, the car is strong in all aspects will last for 100's of thousand's of miles if serviced properly and people will still ask you if it's a new model Porsche.

Weakness:

Will eat rear tyres, Does cost a bit of money to make sure all is spot on but is worth every cent :)

Well this is my second 928 and have to say there is no comparison in the world that will match the 928 for style comfort speed and handling and looks that make it one hell of a car, every time you get in you know this is an awesome car waiting to driven and wanting to give it's all and as a true Porsche once you get used to it nothing will stay close,it will never look dated and the sound of the V8 will thrill every time, it's true what they say "its about fast as you can go without having to eat airline food"

Strength:

Wicked power delivery allowing you to putter around town or accelerate like a banshee. The exhaust note is totally intoxicating once a rear muffler bypass is installed. A leather interior that is ergonomically perfect, leaving you actually more rested after a long trip rather then the fatigue you will get with any other car. Timeless styling; The car is so overdesigned, it is difficult to push it to any of its limits.

Weakness:

The 928 will drive and feel like a champ to the uninitiated, even when it may be mechanically unsound or neglected. Make sure the car gets checked out before purchase by someone who knows 928's, you don't want to be left catching up on the maintenance neglected by the previous owner. This can be extremely costly compared to the purchase price. A 928 in great condition can be the best performance per dollar buy out there, one that needs repair can get expensive very quickly. Stay on top of the maintenance, and you will have a care that will provide hundreds of thousands of miles of unparalled driving pleasure.

What an awesome machine. Nowhere else can you get sportscar handling out of a full blown GT cruiser. Basically a handbuilt leather lined cruise missile capable of pulling in 13's in the quarter mile, a top speed of 170mph, and still capable of delivering 20mpg, all in a timeless body shell made of aluminum and galvanized steel. The 928 compromises nothing, and delivers everything.

Fast, stable, comfortable. I've driven some pretty fast cars, but this one is my favorite!!

Weakness:

Uses a bit of oil, a small price to own this car!

The 928 has been my dream car for years. I've owned 2 in the last couple of years. The '88 was gorgeous, fast and well handling. I was in heaven. When I picked up the '93, there was no going back. The power, looks and comfort of this car is amazing. I keep pinching my self while I'm driving it and can't help but look at it.

An S2 comes stock with 310 Hp. Awesome power on the freeway. High Speed Kick down will even make Mr Callaway take a second look. Comfort for long drives and a better than average fuel consumption for a high horspower motor. Availabilty of parts - New and USed

Weakness:

Maintenance is a Religion. YOU MUST stay on top of everything or it will cost you dearly in the long run. It is better to do the work yourself but if you sub it out to a Tech. It may get pricy. Aluminum body is prone to easier dings/dents.

One of the most underated High Performance Luxury cars Porsche ever designed and produced. Comfort such a full leather interior, power to keep up or beat newer cars of the same genre and styling that still turns heads. Especially the Ladies :-).

Strength:

It justs keeps going and going

Weakness:

It is large and makes for a great challenge on the autocross course.

Powerful and extremely well balanced provides a driving pleasure that cannot be described. The interior was designed for comfort yet the sporty atmosphere lets you know that you are in control of a powerful Shark. You can take a long drive and when you are at the end fell relaxed and ready to drive back.

Strength:

Incredibly cheap, for the preformance you get, and the luxury you get. I am so much happier with this car, than I would be with most new cars today of the same price.

Weakness:

Repairs... If your car is old, parts are going to get old. Things like wires, switches, rubber boots, rubber seals, and belts, are going to get corroded, and cracked, and there will be problems here and there.

These cars are really pretty, really unique, and they are quite fast. Not as fast off the line as some musclecars, but a beast on the freeway. And they are very comfortable on long drives. Keep up on your prevenative maintainance, and it will be a great car for you.

Monster acceleration, aaah the joys of shifting from 1st to second, reverse "H" pattern, to cool. It had a 85mph joke speedometer. Once some kids in a hopped up "stang tried racing me, I never took it out of third gear, just kept passing them. Asked the driver at a light how fast he was going...115

Weakness:

Credit card melting repairs, timing belt cost me $1500, to include a $200 tow from a boonesville, NC to a relaible mechanic in Virginia. Didn't help that the local riff raff broke into it.

Dreamed of owning one since I was a teenager. Test drove several. Had the check in hand for a 86 when I noticed it had been wrecked. Found this 81, owned by a Dr. who owned 2, this was the daily driver. Incredible condition 5 speed.
