Quick 220 Hs, the car handles like a dream, You feel like a man on a mission when you drive! The car is tight, no rattles or noises! The car has a great look to it, Heads constantly turn! I like the close shift!

Weakness:

Should be more of a two seater!! Lower Models could use nicer rims!

I paid $17,000 in July 98 with 30K miles on it....I got a Great deal...I recommend to anyone who enjoys sports cars...as well as someone looking to get into sports cars...this car will hook you!!

Runs like a bat outta hell! Coolest looking out of all the japanese sports cars in my opinion. My 1992 still turns heads. AWD and 4 Wheel steering, geat to drive in snow, rain or sun.

Weakness:

Transmission. The transmission in these cars are known to develop bad syncros. Mitsu will only replace the entire tranny, they will not repair. Unless you are under warrenty expect to fork out $3k+. This is the main reason I wouldn't buy another one.

This is my first high end sports car. Brought it used for $16k from a used car lot with 72k miles. I love it! Its expensive to fix, and has lots of annoying problems that seem to effect everyone. i.e Active Aero lower air dam jamming, fading of rear side pannels, radio antenna jamming, tranny syncro failure, engine tick, etc. I love these cars, and my heart would love a newer 94+ model but my wallet can't take the strain of a tranny failure. Supra here I come!

Everything, it's awesome!

Weakness:

Pieces are costly and hard to find. When needed. Drinks gas a lot.

This is the best car I ever had. Great acceleration, great handling and you can always modify it to your "needs". My need was to get it to 400 hp. 4WD, 4WS, it's simply the best sports car you can get. Paid 44000 US$, 5000$ in upgrades. Make sure you install a H&K air filter for 10 more hp.

Great power and handling. Good looks, shame about the back seat, almost no point bothering, but when you buy a sports car I guess you get that. Give her some love and attention and she will return the favour. Had an annoying tick from the engine, but fixed that by putting i qt of auto tranny fluid in with the oil...now she hums

Strength:

The GT has exceptional handling and an irreplicably designed cockpit. The body features sleek curves and smooth corners making it a highly eye-appealing sports car. Acceleration is extremely strong in the first two gears making stop-and-go driving a leisureful activity. And most important, the harmonious tune of the engine from the cockpit as the tach reads the 4-5k range, makes driving this mitsu a blast. The rear panel view of the car is wide enough to be confused with a diablo.

Weakness:

The rattling and squeaking noises from the front suspension can be obnoxious, especially because of the fact that this car looks so damn good. The stock stereo must go if sound is important for the buyer. A black panel behind the door's windows peels away and looks like a cat scratched it up. Poor pedal position causes you to hold your right foot twisted to the point where your toe faces the center of the car.

Overall, I was rather pleased with this sports car. For having an odometer reading of 164,000, the car has redefined all theories of Mitsubishi manufacturing poor cars. Paying under ten thousand (9,700) can get you a lot of attention with this car. I wouldn't consider buying another one though. Operating costs are high, especially parts (i.e. 400 bucks for a water pump!).

Strength:

Acceleration:
Considering it's heavy weight (approx. 3,800 lb), the accelaration of this vehicle is incredible. It goes from 0-60 anywhere from 4.8 to 5.2 seconds. Due to AWD, you can beat all the other high performance, expensive cars like Acura NSX, Corvette, Porsche, Toyota Supra, etc at the Low end.

Comfort and Luxury:
The ride is stiff, yet quite comfortable. The cockpit can be noisy if you don't have good tires. It comes fully loaded with Leather seats, Power doors/windows, ABS brakes, Automatic Climate Control system, powerfull Infinity Stereo sytem with 6 speakers, Power Sunroof, 18" Chrome Wheels, 8-way driver seat adjustments, and Stereo controls on the Steering wheel as standard features.

Fuel Economy:
The factory specs are 18/24 mpg. It is surely a gas gussler if you use Turbo's a lot. I usually get around (17.5-18)mpg with both city & highway miles, and about 21-22 mpg for highway miles and this is after installing a K&N Air filter and an ATR Cat-back Exhaust. Before I was only getting 15mpg mixed miles.

Handling:
The greatest strength of this car is it's exceptional handling. The AWD, AWS, and Active Aero (the ability to adjust front air dam and rear wing positions depend upon speed) allows the car to grip the road like a glue at low/high speed and dry/rainy conditions.

Looks & Styling:
Mitsubishi 3000GT VR4 is a 'neck-snappin', head-turnin', 'pavement-grabbin', 'road-shreddin', 'turbo-spinnin', 'six-gear shiftin' machine with all the right moves, and all the right curves. It has a very Sporty, Slick/Slim, Curvy, and Sexy body. My "Lady in Red" always catches people's eyes when out on the street. The first question people usually ask me after giving me a complement of "Nice Car" is Which year is your car? and when I tell them that it's 1995, they get really shocked. The interior is quite sporty with Cockpit style seats and guages which gives it a rugged look.

Power & Performance:
The power comes from a Twin Turbo, 3.0 liter with 320 HP engine that can take you from 0-60 in just 4.8 secs, and can do 1/4 mile in just under 14 secs. Just add K&N Intake, better Exhaust system, BOV, boost controller and you can start beating cars like Corvette C5, 911, and Viper.

Price:
With its high level of performance and so much standard equipment, the 3000GT VR4 is priced well at $44,600. A used one can be bought for anywhere from $18,000 to $32,000. The VR-4 is in every way a class of its own. One can't get a exotic sports car with all the power, technology, and gizmos that comes with VR4 at this price, specially when you can compete with Acura NSX, Corvette, Mazda RX7, Nissan 300ZX, Porsche, Toyota Supra, and other sports cars in the same category.

Safety:
The 3000GT comes with Dual Airbags, ABS brakes, AWD, and AWS. Toe-control links in the rear suspension induce toe-in for greater stability when cornering and under hard braking and acceleration. It does this by adjusting the toe, or alignment, up to 1.5 degrees, steering the rear wheels in the same direction as the front wheels. YOu can stop this beast from 60 mph in a chest-compressing 116 feet.

Technology and Special Gizmos:
Along with AWD and AWS, 3000GT VR4 also comes with Active Aero (the ability to adjust front air dam and rear wing positions depend upon speed) allows the car to grip the road firmly. Available in earlier models was triple mode electronically controlled supension and dual mode active exhaust.

Weakness:

1. The headroom for front seat passengers is limited even for those of medium height (upto 6ft). There's even very little room for passengers in the rear seats. It's best to fold the rear seat backs and use the area for luggage.
2. Weight is a little on the heavy side (3,871 lbs), but the weight gives the vehicle a stability others may not have.
3. Although VR4 is quite fast at the Low end but it is a little slow at the High end.
4. The maintenance and repair costs is quite expensive, specially the parts since 3000GT has now been discontinued. Although if you maintain this vehicle, costly repairs can be avoided.
5. It drinks gas more than most cars in it's category specially when the Turbo's are running and since you can only feed it Premium gas, it will cost you a bunch when running it hard.
6. I have heard these cars can give you transmission/trrany problems, but so far I have 99,400 miles on my car and no problems.
7. The Cockpit is NOISY, specially at high speed. I would recommend buying good/expensive tires like Michelin etc. I have Nitto Extreme 555 tires....although they are very good on dry and wet roads and last long but are very noisy.

Mitsubishi's 3000GT VR-4 offers dazzling performance, stellar handling, and aggressive styling. The 3000GT VR4 is a high tech, high performance (320 bhp), grand touring, 2+2 seater, exotic sports coupe which was built to compete with cars in the luxury sport class such as the Acura NSX, Chevrolet Corvette, Mazda RX-7, Nissan 300ZX and the Toyota Supra. It is a very impressive car which features a twin turbo charged, twin intercooled engine that can take you from 0-60 in just 4.8 secs. Standard features also includes all-wheel drive, four-wheel steering and Active Aero (the ability to adjust front air dam and rear wing positions depend upon speed).
Probably one of the best performance values on the planet for the car enthusiast who can afford one.
Be aware of maintenance and repair costs.

Goes like a rocket and hugs the road like a slot car. Takes 25 mph corners at 65, once you learn to trust the suspension and steering.

Weakness:

In 2.5 years, I have replaced the alternator, battery, starter, clutch, tranny, water pump, and timing belt/chain.
The back seats are only good for people under the age of 5. Do not EVER buy one without the extended warranty, as the work described above would have been about 10 grand. The 6-speed tranny was about 3 grand alone.

Might buy another one, but probably would buy a Lexus or something like that instead.

Model Reviewed: 3000GT base

Strength:

The car has decent power (222hp for the base model for pre-1997 models) and a very nice sleek design. In addition, the VR-4 has twin turbos and AWD, making it ridiculously fast, even at 3900 lbs for the VR-4. The car also has very many nice amenities and features not usually available in sports cars, since it was more designed as a grand touring car. The SL has an electronically controlled suspension, and the VR-4 has Dynamic Aero Spoiler, which changes angles at higher speeds

Weakness:

All models are extremely heavy, with the base models and SLs running about 3600 lbs. and the VR-4s about 3900 lbs. due to the turbos and the AWD mechanism. With the base and SL models, the cars feel sluggish and often can't get off to good starts. In fact, I've been beat by turboed Civics in my base model. The problem is compounded even more in the new base model 3000GTs (1997+), which have the 161 hp 3.0L. I haven't personally driven one, but I'm guessing that a new Civic with a good start could blow that thing away.

The cars are also expensive to repair. The Getrag tranny in the VR-4 is a piece of crap, and if you get one, you should have $5000 set aside for when the tranny falls apart, which is pretty often. In addition, the black panels behind the side windows start to fade away and must be replaced to keep the car looking nice, and the roller cover for the trunk is poorly designed.

The car is purely an image car, since the sporty image belies the weakness of all models but the VR-4s.

The car's main purpose is now as an image car, with the exception of the fire-breathing VR-4. Only the VR-4 has the power that matches the looks, and it's the only one worth the money. Of course, the car has been discontinued, so you'll have to look for a used one if you want one.

Strength:

I've just recently managed to sell my Mitsubishi 3000 GT, and all I can say is... thank god I did. Although the car looks meaty, slaps the eyeballs to the back of your head at the touch of the accelerator, and has a 19 gallon tank, there's much more to worry about than simple eye-catching speed.

Weakness:

The beast I bought was heavy. Not only that, but it decided to fall to pieces on regular occasions, leaving me stranding on three separate occasions. Side-show midgets can fit in the back seat, but worst of all... the car developed a number of engine problems (like, for example, the constant stall when stationary). It even decided not to start for me - so I took it to the less-than helpful Mistubishi dealer (*koff* Manly Mitsubishi in Santa Rosa *koff*) and they weren't even able to replicate the problem. Until I went back to them and caouldn't start the car. Not only was the car a COMPLETE DISASTER, but the Mistubishi dealership was OVERWORKED, and couldn't really care less about my car.

WARNING: These cars are cheap for a reason. Despite some crazy mountain weaving, great handling, and disgraceful acceleration, the number of moving parts, the constant breakdowns, and the lack of competence on behalf of the Manly dealership, made me choose a Subaru instead (which hasn't let me down yet).

I would have been a Mitsubishi driver for life - if their cars didn't fall to pieces. Be wary of buying a second hand 3000GT. It'll cost you. If you're buying new, hurry - they're discontinuing the car this year. Thank goodness.
