Strength:

Reasonably good reliability, build quality, mileage, utility. Hats off to chrysler for the 2.4 engine-probably the best balance of performance and efficiency out there. Glad they brought it back this year.

Weakness:

Bad horn-when you need it, it's not there. Weird wipers-but they don't go on for me as often as some folks. Bad belt tensioner (replaced under warranty-good service by the way from East Hills Chrysler). Right sliding door rattles and rear belts got covered with black goo this summer-gonna be a hell of a time cleaning that off!

This was an extremely reluctant purchase. The arrival of twins made for three kids all requiring car seats. These days the only vehicles with sufficient volume to hold them are mini-vans (although we found that a Ford Crown Vic can also do the job). We went with the short chassis and 2.4 litre engine which has been a good choice. Good reliability and the best mileage you can get in the class (high 20's on trips}. By the way, regardless of what Consumer Reports says, the performance is better than acceptable with this engine. Also, although I haven't driven too many, this van feels closest to driving a good car-almost fun to drive.
Like I said, my wife and I HAD to get a van-I'll never understand the people who buy these things when they have a choice.

Strength:

Roomy, comfortable, good highway gas mileage, handles well, price, intergrated child seats, keyless entry, climate control, dual sliding doors, reclining rear seats, good acceleration.

Weakness:

transmission (had the van for less than 2 months and been in service dept 3 times for trans leak,)sound system sucks (made for 4 pass car) opt for 6 speaker cd. rear seats are very heavy, loud highway noise.

Nice comfortable ride, but buy an extended warranty. I would buy another Chrysler but next time it will be the Town and Country.

Strength:

Nice outside styling compared to other mini-van. The Odessy and Sienna are butt-ugly in comparison. Good handling and power isn't too bad compared to other mini-vans (Mazda MPV). It is still going after 128K

Weakness:

1. It is reliable in that it has never left me stranded but the cost of owning it is too high. It seems to cost me $500-$600 every 6 months to fix something new that has broken on it.
2. I haven't had to replace the tranmission but I had to have a leak fixed (for $500).
3. Wipers turn on by themselves.
4. Chrysler service sucks. They are crooks. Last time they claimed a problem with the head gasket was causing a coolant leak. They said while they were at it I should have the timing belt and water pump replaced. The cost was $2000.00 with an additional $500.00 to fix the leaking transmission. I had them fix only the leaking transmission. I took it to another shop for a second opinion after noticing the leak myself. The ypressure test the coolant system and did a hydrocarbon. It was only a bad water pump. It was another $500.00 to fix of course,.

I can't recommend this van. It just cost too much to keep it running. If Chrysler would do something about increasing the quality of the contruction I might consider it. However, in the face of over whelming evidence they continue to deny there is a problem. They have no credibility anymore.

Quality seems to be the bain of all mini-vans. For all the discussion about Honda and Toyota, as a group mini-vans have the worst service records of any vehicle type. That includes Oddesey and Sienna. People are flocking to these models believing that there is safety in the name. In reality They may be better that Chrysler but worst than the average 4 door passenger sedan (American or Other wise). That is what you should get unless you just really need the room.

Sounds like a broken record but the Transmission leaked at first, replaced by dealer. Then 6mo. later the differencial pin broke but under waranty, fixed again. 6 weeks later the spider gears welded, this time Certified Transmission would not cover. They also said they have had to fix to many transmission to count on this style van. Can't believe they don't know of a problem with this. Do not buy if you live where it snows or on hills.

I really love all the room. We are a family of seven,so that works well.
It does drive nice, although I haven't been able to drive it for 2 weeks
because it's in the shop, again!

Weakness:

The Transmission! Do I sound like everyone else? When I bought it used last summer (June) it was leaking transmission fluid. I should have taken that as a sign. Anyway, the dealership would put in a new one, and it would have a year warranty. I said okay, well, to make a long story short, Iam now on my third transmission problem,(I had to have another new tranny pput in 6weeks or so after the first one) The first two were under the tranny warranty. We have to pay 1000.00 for this last one. Of course the particular problem this time is not covered by the warranty! The spider gears or something, supposedly caused by spinning the wheels! We live on a big hill, and heaven for bid should you not have to spin the tires to make it up the driveway! What a wimpy van! I am very discusted with it, and plan to trade it ASAP! Even though, I owe more on it than what they will give me for it, what a ripoff!

I would definetly not reccomend it, even to my worst enemy. I am very dissapointed in it, and mad at myself for not taking the first transmission problem as a sign to not purchase it in the first place. I guess sometimes we have to learn things the hard way. Never again will I purchase another Plymouth vehicle! The more I have talked to people the more I have learned of the transmission problems common with this van. Why don't they have a recall or something?! I am mad!

Strength:

More comfortable than other vehicles we have previously or currently owned ('84 Dodge Daytona, '88 Pontiac Grand Prix, '84 Nissan 200SX, '95 Mazda 626). Lots of cargo space for hauling if you remove the seats. Great for travelling with kids. Expresso package had almost all the options we wanted including the 3.8L V6 which is normally not available on '98 Voyager.

Weakness:

Headlights could be brighter. Wind noise during highway driving. Road noise over rough surfaces. FYI - OEM tires were Goodyear Conquest. Just replaced with Bridgestone B70S and it seems to be much quieter.

Have over 52000 miles in 2.5 years of driving. No problems so far except auto belt tensioner needed to be replaced (cost around $200 or so if done by the dealer).

None....this is one hell of a minivan...no major repairs needed...knock on wood

Dollar for dollar this is by far the best Minivan out there....take care of the van and do regular maintenence and you won't have any problems with the transmission that a lot of people have hgad a problem with. Chrysler invented the minivan and in the 1996 redign they perfected it. It handles so well for a van...it's amazing....I strongly suggest that you make this the van you buy if you're in the Minivan market.

Transmission...went at 48,000 Kilometers

Here's the scoop...it's a great overall van but the transmissions suck. If you want the transmission to last you need to drive your 4 speed automatic in "3" and avoid the overdrive "D" setting. It will cost you more on gas but you won't have to replace the transmission!! Also, get the transmission fluid changed every 2 years. If you do these 2 things you'll be ok. You see the van weighs too much to drive it in overdrive...thus you burn out the transmission....drive it in "3"!!!!!

Strength:

Good family van has bucket seats that keep the children from messing with each other. Did not have problems untill the warrenty ended.

Weakness:

This car was good at the begining. then everything went down hill from their. We have had to replace. The: Alternator, Struts, all the brakes twice, Starter, fuel pump, tuned up twice, 3 sets of tires, The stereo(am/fm) is doing O.K. but the Casset deck has ate cassets many of times. It allways shakes while taking off so we got the tires ballenced still does it.Has brand new Transmission in it. Changed fan motor which was very expensive.Tends to die after you are driving on the freeway(70 mph). Acts like it doesnt want to start in the morning sometimes.Battery has been changed twice (Die Hard).Other than that I guess you can say it has been good.

If you plan on buying a Plymouth Grand Voyager only keep it for a short period of time . Get rid of it once the warrenty has gone out!

Strength:

Roomy, drives like a car, god paint job, 75K miles now and seems to be going strong. The second sider door. 25 mpg with V6 motor.

Weakness:

Transmission quit at 42K miles, on the third water pump, brakes last less than other cars I have owned, the same wiper problem that everyone seems to experience (come on automatically).

Our kids have been hard on this van and it seems to take the abuse. I am glad we bought an extended warranty because the new tranny would have been $1800. There are probably better quality minivans out there but at $10-15K more, I figured I can tolerate a few more repairs. I plan on keeping it until the warranty expires and then consider trade.
