Strength:
Comfortable, roomy and the rear heat control is nice, AC works real good.
Weakness:
Transmission and bad gas mileage. I have had my Windstar for about 18 months now. It has been running well until just recently. I have 178,000Kilometers(approx. 111,000 miles) on it. My transmission is beginning to act up when leaving from a stop, it almost gives one whiplash when it finally shifts gear. It also acts up on the highway-speed remains constant but the revs will jump from 2100 to 3000 rpm''s on a level highway on cruise control, without the speed changing and no shift in the transmission. It is going into the shop next week for transmission work and sensor replacement (TPS,EGO, and DPFE). Engine runs great, no problems so far. The oilpan and stbilizer bar and linkage were all just replaced as well as the second rear wiper motor. I am now just dreading the cost of the transmission repair and hoping my engine does not go. A number of people where I work have or had Windstars and now they tell me they had either transmission or head gasket problems. I guess next time I will do better research. It does get me from point A to point B Similar Products Used: Dodge Caravan. |

Strength:
Very dependable. I believe they corrected the problems from the 1995 - 1996 era. Rides nice.
Weakness:
Benchs are very heavy. Cant move the 3rd bench to the second bench position. We have had this van since July 1998. It has been very trouble free. Other than oil changes, we have had very little problems. It has 87000 miles on it now. Just had rear brakes replaced for the first time. Front brakes were redone at about 60000 mi. One recall at about 20000 mi. Presently we have a idiot light for the door ajar that intermitently comes on - probably bad sensor. Also just had a series of times where the ignition switch locks and cant start it - I have talked to alot of people with every type of van out and they have had the same problem from time to time. Although the transmission jerks sometimes when going slow through a parking lot, it has never given us any problems. We purchased the towing package with all the extra cooling which helps everything run cooler - I beleive it is a big plus. Similar Products Used: Aerostar, Villager |

Strength:
Reliablity Low cost of maintenance Easy to drive functionality with sliding rear seat
Weakness:
Could use more pep A/C taxes the motor on acceleration We purchased the 1993 Quest new in August 1993. We now have 108,000 miles on it and it is still running strong. There have been few problems along the way and we are 100% satisfied with our vehicle. As a matter of fact, we are replacing it with a new Chevy Venture (has 8 seats) and have decided to keep the ''93 Quest as a second vehicle over a ''95 LHS which only has 87,000 miles due to the reliability and superior repair record of the Quest. Repairs needed 1.) Rear A/C problem $500 other items were typical maintenance thing Similar Products Used: Chrysler LHS |

Radio works good. Fairly good gas mileage (20 mpg)
Weakness:
AC went out twice, transmission replaced twice, head gaskets replaced once, numerous other recalls Major problems with the transmission. It went out at 55,000 miles and was repaired by Ford. Went out again at @ 70,000 miles and I got to buy the replacement at @ $2,000.00. Head gaskets are defective on the Windstar. The were inspected on a recall in 1998 and just went bad at 89,000 miles. The extended warranty on the head gaskets is good for 7 years or 100,000 miles. My vehicle was 6 months over the warranty period and Ford said ''Too Bad''. Both of these are major defects in the 1995 Windstar effecting hundreds of thousands of vehicles. You would think Ford would recognize their responsibility to their customers on major defects in their products. Many I was robbed by Sawgrass ford. They sold me this defective 2000 Ford Windstar with 9 miles on it and played games to honour the waranty. They convinced me not to test drive by showing me all Presidential awards etc. This vehicle has out of spec parts which was eventually determined by the mechanics but Ford refused to fix it. The vehicle pulls to the right and Ford refuses to fix it. I had to resort to the lemon law to get a resolution. Similar Products Used: Rent Ford Windstar |

Strength:
The interior of Fords are fantastic!! It is a shame that the engine and design are so pathetically lously. What a waste, I will miss the heavy cushy interior, but I won''t miss the repair bills.
Weakness:
Major transmission problems, head gasket problems, brakes need to be replaced at a ridiculous rate, it devours tires. Ford does not fix the problems, blames the customer for having too many miles. This van has been a nightmare. I have owned three Fords prior to this one, and this is definitely the last one. It had to have the transmission replaced at 113,000 miles and according to what I have read on the internet, this is a problem experienced by many Windstar owners. From what I have read, many Windstar transmissions go out right around 100,000. miles. Ford blames it on the amount of miles on the vehicles, it is a well known problem which Ford will not own up to. Now the "new" (actually rebuilt) transmission, which cost $2800. is going out again, AFTER ONLY 16,000 MILES!! Our van has had a blown head gasket, which was fixed as a recall item, not because we received a recall notice from Ford, but because the dealer''s service manager knew it was a recall item. This is also a notorious Windstar problem. It has had numerous sets of brakes and it consumes tires like a ravenous animal. The speedometer is on it''s way out, it is all over the place when you drive over about 70 mph. The "check engine" light is constantly on and the dealer service people can never figure out what is wrong with it. We can''t wait to unload this lemon! Pardon my venting, but I really loved the interior of this van and the feeling of safety, but was extremely disappointed with the problems we experienced. Similar Products Used: None |

Strength:
Style, electrical features, we had a VCP installed (which our kids love).
Weakness:
Does tend to not be reliable...heavy frame, but many "chincy" made parts that break down easily. We''ve had our Windstar for approximately 18 months. We bought it because of its body style, wheels, the 3.8L engine for power, its "heaviness", and size (we have 4 children). Still, we like the looks of the van but we''ve had our share of problems as well... - automatic rear side doors become manual only, needed repair - the "change oil light" never turns off, even the dealer can''t get it to change - power steering pump leaked, needed to be replaced - installed a VCP which malfunctioned and needed replacing - now the most recent is an $850 "parital" repair from a defective freeze plug which blew-out and into a location between the engine and the transmission. Pulling the engine from the van was step #1. Replacing freeze plugs was #2. Step #3 was finding out that the over-heating and pressure exerted by the engine after blowing the freeze plugs warped the head gasket...not found until after the engine was reinstalled and paid for. I am now in the process of getting the head gasket fixed which is estimated at another $800 - 1,000. Although I''ve been driving a Ford Taurus for 4 years and still love the car. I would gladly trade this van in. Similar Products Used: ''94 Mercury Villager - Nautica (It was too small for our family, but we loved its looks and dependability.) |

Strength:
Nice quiet ride, lots of room, comfortable seats with high head rests
Weakness:
Lots of minor repairs and glitches that are inconvenient and lead owners to believe their vehicle is always in need of repair I''ve just finished reading over 70 reviews on this sight. I leased the vehicle for the first 2 yrs and was so impressed decided to purchase it. Overall I''m glad I did - I definitly enjoy the ride and comfort as a family of 5. However, I do agree with all the petty repairs and problems with the sensors for a/c, lights, door ajar, locks, cd player, engine light etc. Have had them all! Most of the work was done under warranty until I had to replace a $500 sensor just past the warranty time. Tire have been a problem, although I''m not sure thats a Windstar problem as much as manufacturer problem. I''m now at 72,000 kms and need new tie rods.......I''m praying I wont have any problems with the transmission or engine.
