Safety is the only strengths the van has.
Weakness:
Power steering system I''m very sad with my Windstar 2001. It is damage and Ford doesn''t want to change it before it is too late. I bought my car on Nov. 01, 2001 with only 19 miles. For the first of December it becomes to give me problem. It start with a high noise in the steering wheel. I took it to the dealer service department (Ford del Norte Hatillo, Puerto Rico) and they verify it and they told us they had changed the power steering hose. But in a week it was the same noise again, my husband took it again to the service department and then the told him that it was the power steering pump and the steering shaft. They ordered the pieces and a week later, past Saturday January 12, 2002, they changed the power steering pump and the shaft, on Sunday 13 there were the same noise. On Monday, my husband took it again to the dealer. They told us that the don''t know what happens with this unit, that there is no evidence of damage in the pump nor in rack and pinion, and they will consult with US Ford Department. My husband and I works at Pharmaceutical Industries, my husband has rotating shifts. As you may understand we have no time to spend on the dealer every time this happens. When we went to the dealer the first time, the unit hasn''t 1000 miles yet, we ask to the dealer owner if it is possible to change the unit, and he told us that it is a decision that only Ford Company can decide. I''m very displeased with my car, I''m going to consult with my lawyer and with Consumer Department of Puerto Rico what proceed in this case. I just only want my unit changed for a new one. Today I''m going to pay only the second invoice of my car loan, it is for 6 years, imaging what I''m going to have in six years, a motorcycle for a car?. Strength:
The only good feature of the Windstar is more leg room for very tall drivers.
Weakness:
transmission, engine, speedometer, electrical system, brakes Has to be one of the worst vehicles ever produced. Bought with 26,000 miles, transmission problems at 28,000, rebuilt under warranty, has been rebuilt twice again in 100,000 miles at my cost. Front engine cover gasket blew at 76,000 miles, had it fixed for $1,000, then engine blew within 2 weeks and I had to replace the whole thing - pleaded with Ford for help but they didn''t care. Speedometer problems since 30,000 miles, replaced under warranty but has never worked right since, now transmission won''t shift properly due to speedo and we can''t drive it. Electrical problems, rear power window won''t work sporadically, power door lock motor broke. Brake rotors needed replacement way too early (like all Fords). I won''t go near another new Ford. Similar Products Used: I''ve rented Chrysler, GM - both a little better in ride quality, but a little less leg room. |

Strength:
Size, features, safety ratings
Weakness:
Mechanicl problems, transmission, motor I will never buy a Ford again. Not only have I had ongoing knocking problems that the dealer never seems to be able to hear, let alone fix. But, I have had to service it several times for leaky gaskets at $500 a pop. Most have been covered under warranty, but very much a hassle. Also, I have just learned that many owners have major problems with transmissions and the motor, with replacements often necessary. Don''t buy one if you have a choice. |

Strength:
Configuration, cabin comfort
Weakness:
Almost every mechanical system, braking transmission, cooling, electrical -- you name it When it runs properly it is comfortable and functional. That said it is plagued by design flaws that lead to catastrophic system failures -- head gaskets that fail and ruin engine, transmission parts that won''t stand up and disc brake rotors that warp every 25,000 miles. In short it is a piece of junk and not worth $2000 let alone $20000 Similar Products Used: none |

Strength:
Economical and carries 7 passengers. With 4 captain seats, 1 can be removed and allow more room and still seat 6 comfortably.
Weakness:
Major engine problems. Other Fords I have owned have never had this many problems. I''ve had so many problems with my Windstar. Starting from the top of problems...New Back Passenger window (tint on window bad). New Brakes (within first 3500 miles). New heater blower fan (replaced 3 times in first 2 years). New engine finally (head gasket went bad twice). Slider door (locking mechanism was bad). Electrical problems with door ajar light (never have had this fixed). Power steering pump (in the process of this being fixed). This is a minor list of things that have been repaired. Along with recalls and other things. I love my Windstar, but I really hate it also. Ford needs to take the responsibility of providing a lemon and not ripping off the consumer. I feel that I was robbed and they know it. I should have bought the Dodge Caravan. |

whole van Owned my 1st an last Ford for just over a year, bought it used with 55k miles. Already spent $24oo.in Trans repairs, have guage problems, extremely noisy powersteering pump, lazy on the horsepower and its the 3.8, this is so bad I''ve recently discovered atleast 10 problem websites. Anyone claiming they never had a problem with their windstar is either a Ford car salesman or sleeping w/ one or both. Shame on you Ford!! Similar Products Used: First and Last |

Weakness:
Transmission slips, leaks oil and also does not seem to run at full engine power. Squeaks in front by wheels but no one seems to know what the problem is. If i had another chance to purchase another vehicle I believe I would avoid the Windstar. The cost outweighs the pleasure. Similar Products Used: no |

Strength:
Many options including power doors, rear back-up laser sensors. Nice lay-out (I took out...and kept out...the second captain''s passenger chair early on which gives the van a lot of room and still seats 6.
Weakness:
Several recalls. Will get the transmission serviced right away as a precaution. Overall, a very good car for my family. It''s predominantly my wife''s car and she works close to home, so we have less than 19,000 miles on it despite owning it over 2 1/2 years and driving it once to Fla. The transmission problems I read online here are scary. I had a few minor quality problems the dealer took care of quickly, plus the van has been recalled several times for minor things (that''s a pain). However, the car has met the purposes for which I bought it. The dual power doors and rear back-up sensors are fantastic. No problems with A/C or heat. Starts easy and drives well (for a van).
