Strength:

Large interior

Weakness:

Besides what I have just mentioned something has to change with the attitude about warrenty work.

Torque Inverter blew in the transmission 14000 km's Parksville Chrisler took 1 month and 1 day to fix.Found out driving home the transmission is grinding, reverse, vehicle is out of alignment from repair and transmission fluid contaminated, back in purchase shop in Comox. Looking at the problem and damage. This is not right and I have been given a lot of grief over the situation by a couple of individuals. Warranty work was this for the delay, the contamination of the fluid, grinding and alignment.. what next. only bought it 6 months ago. I hope to say I will never have another problem, pretty disapointed at the moment.

Weakness:

1.LEMON

We purchased our van 1 year ago, and since we have made severa trips for repairs. 1. CD player dident work from day one. 2. first time washing paint washed off back bumper. 3. five months, power steering cooler blows up. -30 out and blizzard took 5 hours to get through to road side assistance. 4. antilock brake sensors fail. 5. transmission housing crack open and leaks for no real reason. All these problems happened in the first year of ounership. We are out of pocket lots for time and travel due to repairs. We will not likely buy another Dodge product for many years to come.

Strength:

Give this vehicle proper treatment and stick tothe recommended maintenance schedule and you've got a fine car here. Solid as a rock.

Weakness:

Only a few minor interior flaws. The plastic visor clips were the first to go (perhaps using a better grade of plastic would remedy this). The lever that controls the recline of the driver's seat broke somewhere internally so the seat will not adjust anymore. Perhaps plastic parts are involved here also.

I bought this grocery-getter in the Summer of '99 thinking that it was a lot of car for the money. AND IT IS !! Since then it has tallied up over 150,000 miles and is still going strong. My wife is religious about getting the oil changed every 3,000 miles, and that has no doubt contributed to its longevity. This vehicle has had some hard miles put on it in the South Texas heat, and has weathered it fine. The only repair other than ordinary maintenance the van has ever required is a brake job at 120,000 miles, which was done at a local shop for about $100. All in all, this ride has been solid as a rock and an exceptional value. The interior has held up well, discounting a minor flaw or two, and the paint job has a minor blemish or two but still looks great after a good wash job. The ride is not a bit rough, in fact rivaling some of the so-called "luxury" cars I've ridden in. She gets paid off next year, and we're planning on investing in another when this one finally calls it quits. Highly recommended automobile

Strength:

looks good

Weakness:

too many to list

The Dodge Caravan has had numerous parts go bad or fall off: mirrors, lights, battery, door locks, steering column, horn, headlights, etc. The candy apple red paint delaminated and all dealers denied any resopnsibility even within the first two years. They offered to repaint for $500 but I already paid $1000 for the color when new. Overall: junky parts; poor service; never again!

Strength:

good gas mileage, nice riding.

Weakness:

oil leaks, transmission problems, A/C problems

My van was excellent on gas mileage, over 300 miles to the tank, which is much better than some of the past vehicles I have owned. It was great for hauling the kids around and loading up bigger things that most vehicles couldnt' haul. And it was pretty reliable, at least for awhile, till the transmission started slipping. It wouldn't come out of first gear till I pulled the van over and shut the engine off, turned it back on, and it came out of it's problem, and drove just fine. That ended up doing that for about 2 months, then one day, I couldn't even drive it down the road without it trying to buck as if i were riding a wild horse in a rodeo! The transmission was shot, and i was lost for words. I loved that van, although it did have over 200,000 miles to it. But I do know that Dodge Caravans are notorious for transmission problems. It leaked oil as well, constantly. Now I am the proud owner of another Dodge Caravan, but this time I bought a 93'. Thus far no problems with the transmission... but ask me about it within a year!

OK.........I am back. My trans failed due to the clutch that changes gear. I did notice that it would change gears back to first but when I would shut the van off, while in neutral, and turn it back on the gears would go into place and then it would be ok. This started back in March of 2003. I let it go thinking it will be OK when I should have taken it in to be checked. The garage where I took it told me that they could have probably replaced the clutch. The clutch broke off and ripped the trans gears apart. I was still able to drive it forward but with heavy jerking of van as if the emergency brake was on. I DO NOT have the 4 peed transmission with "Over Drive" that many ppl are having problems with and it's the 4 speed with "Over Drive" that is giving the most problems with breaking down. The garage is only charging me $580 to replace the who transmission, including labor cost. The trans they are putting in is from another junker but the trans in that van is in good condition and only has about 80,000 miles on it. They tell me the trans should get another 70-80,000 miles or more. They told me that because the trans is coming off a junker that they can only gaurantee it for 30 days like any used parts you buy. I will see how long this trans will last and you can be sure that I will have it checked out if the gears slip in any way. I feel I could have avoided this problem completly if I had taken it in to be checked back in March. The clutch could have been replaced at a much lower cost 4 sure but waiting as long as I did and having the clutch brake off and damaging my gears. I am part of the blame and then again I may be totally blamed for my waiting. Oh by the way, the transmission that is in my van right now has 128,000 miles on it. So, you can be the judge and decide if the Dodge Caravan is good or not. At least stay away from the 4 speed with "Over Drive". That's the one that has the biggest complaints on.

Transmission

Had the van for only 5 months and the transmission failed. Today, June 28th,2002. I am a bit upset about it but at least I paid only 800 for it. I am going to see what it will cost to fix it, if I fix it and then I will let you know. I liked the van and I was only putting about 15 miles on it daily. Like I said, I am upset at this time but can tell you that I will never recomend this van to anyone. Stay away from them. I have bought beaters for 100 dollars that ran for 3-4 years without any problems.

Strength:

Drives and rides comfortably, great for long trips. Reliability

Weakness:

I did have to fix the air conditioner, but it didn't work when I bought it. Bad hoses common problems with Crysler products of that era. Should of been recalled, but were not. I knew I was going to have to fix this when I bought it. I also replaced the fuel pump recently and a water pump a couple of years ago. Both seats could fold down making it easier to haul things. Not enough cargo space when third row seat is in place. I have to keep third seat in my garage most of the time, so I have room for all my stuff. Why couldn't it just fold down like the Honda's do?

I bought this van 4 years ago with 160,000 miles on it. It now has 220,000 miles on it and is still going strong. I have no complaints about it. The transmission problems that everyone is experienceing is with the 4 speed over- drive transmission. The key is to get one without the overdrive. This requires buying a 3.0 6cyl or the 4cyl engine. I love my van and I plan on it going another 200,000 miles. I have a friend who has one with 500,000 miles, and still going. No tranny problems. This van owes me nothing I was envolved in an accident with it 6 months after I bought it which totaled out the van. I got a $3,500 settlement out of the other driver's insurance company. I bought the van back for a hundred dollars and repaired it with used parts myself for $500.00.

Good handling, good design.

Reliability

I would not recommend the Dodge Grand Caravan. Its is big, and has a great design, but its high maintenance. Its needs a $600 infusion every 15000 miles, between brake jobs, rotors, transmission work and other maintenance.
