Strength:
none really; this is the most unremarkable vehicle I''ve ever owned.
Weakness:
Mileage (w/3.8L), interior materials, too big outside compared to interior space. Leased this one after a very successful 7 years with a 1990 Caravan. Very difficult to maneuver and park due to ''bulged'' side panels and extended nose. Quality of materials isn''t even up to the level of the 1990 model (which was MUCH less expensive), driver''s seat vinyl is cracked, leather steering wheel cover and rear seat armrests are worn through after less than 3 years. Chrysler warranty is laughable, as dealer uses it as an excuse for over-priced service. Last service was over $700, with nothing broken, and most repair items covered under "warranty". Part prices are shamefully high compared to competitors. This was my 5th and definitely LAST Chrysler product. Similar Products Used: Pontiac Montana Toyota Sienna |

Strength:
Not sure there are any anymore
Weakness:
Needs too much service Major maintenance issues since 3yr warranty expired. Am following scheduled maintenance guidleines as written by Chrysler. Average bill prior to expiry of 3yr warranty, $94 on 11 visits, average bill since, $349 on 7 visits. Buy the additional 2 years of warranty coverage if you got the cash. Only 75,000kms (47,000 miles) and front and rear value cover seals have been replaced due to major engine oil leakage. Belt tensioner seized, replaced, next maintenance belt needs replacing, labor charged again. Could have replaced belt time before and saved maintenance costs?? Chrysler should post a service schedule and prices so all new van buyers can see the future costs. Even the printed schedule is not complete and extra needs are made known on each visit??? Had a 1985 Voyager before, traded it in on this one and didnt have near this many major repairs by year 5. Definitey some bad vehicles (LEMONS) being made and no hope for consumer. |

none After 160 000 miles I think it''s time to buy a new one. But it has been a great van. In 6 years had to replace only (other than tires and brakes) alternator and oxygen sensor. BTW "JoeTox" about your "quality" Mazda MPV. Just released "2002 edition of The Ultimate Car Book report" rates vehicles in eight categories, including safety features and crash tests. Results: BEST MINIVANS- 1.Mercury Villager and it''s twin Nissan Quest 2.Chrysler Town and Country 3.Pontiac Montana Mazda placed last, sorry Also it states that, the vehicles with the most complaints were the Mazda MPV minivan, Kia Sportage SUV and Ford Excursion SUV. Strength:
- 2.4 4 cyl. a pretty good and efficient engine when not overloaded - economical, if not planning to sell it - handles well on good tires - praticality of any minimvan is hard to beat if you have >1 kid
Weakness:
- Very poor resale value - Safety questions related to multiple lawsuits involving Gen3 seatbelts on this and many other Chrysler Products - archaic (seen in professional reviews) 3 speed transmission - Factory tires are poor. Rotate at every oil change or expect to have problems! - lack of fold down 3rd seat - no roll down read windows (see Mazda) - annoying rattle in dash and rear door - dealers Yes, we made the mistake of buying the base entry level model with 2.4 4cyl. Good luck trying to get rid of it when you''re ready to move up or into something else!! After owning it for a year, we improved our financial position some and decided to take advantage of the 0.9% deals Chrysler was offering last summer. However, the best deal available from three local dealers on the base 6 cyl. Doge/Chrysler 3.0 with limited power features (locks and mirrors) still could only match the deal I obtained from a Mazda dealer for their much improved and redesigned MPV DX -- their low end minivan that still came with a complete power package, rear AC, third fold-down seat, CD, captains chairs, tint, roof rack, and many other features and quality known to be better than Chrysler. The Dodge dealers refused to come any lower on their price and just kept saying I should want their vehile because "it''s the best selling minimvan in the country." Right, and Bud''s the best selling beer and Britney Spears is a best selling singer.... Insulting the intelligence of the buyer is not a good thing and two of the Dodge dealers seemed to make it routine practice. One of them (really) even tried to explain to me how I didn''t want to buy the Mazda because it was made by robots instead of the caring hands of a human being! Yea, just what I needed to hear -- that my new Dodge was welded together by some union employee at beer-thirty on a Friday afternoon. I''ll take the robot, and it''s inability to make a mistake or get lazy any day! In fact, if that dealer knew anything about his vehicles, he''d probably learn that even Dodge uses robots for welding. Unfortunately, I thought I could do better selling my 2000 Dodge myself since Mazda (now understandably) wouldn''t offer me squat for it as a trade in! Thus, I''ve now waited 6 months to find a buyer and had to take a nearly $1500 hit because of the incredible loss of value over just 2 years -- unbelievable for a car that still has 1 full year left on it''s warranty. FYI, after 1 year of payments on the Mazda, again with min. down, just like I did with the original Dodge, but at a 6.2% rate, I''m already in an even equity position and expect to be able to sell it way above my loan value- if that day ever comes. Strength:
great space, have moved kids in and out of colleges, in and out of apartments, travelled across country in great compfort, motor (3.3) is spectacular.
Weakness:
none for this one After reading so many sad stories, I feel I have to talk about my van. Yes, at 100,000 miles I had the transmition rebuilt (I topped it off with Dextron instead of AFT 3, and it was toast within 4 weeks), but now with 354,000 (three hundred and fifty four thousand)miles on the vehicle, I have had only minor repairs over the last ten years. The motor is still great, and the van itself still looks sharp inside and out. I''ve bought a 1996 grand LE, and I love it, hope that it can be half the van my 91 is. Still drive the 91 almost every day to work, needs a seal in the transmition now, and the mechanic says it will cost $250 to fix. I wonder if dodge will give me a new one at 500,000 miles. My neighbor says no, because I''ve already gotten three cars use out of this one. I hope my bragging doesn''t get me into trouble. Weakness:
Belt Tensioner breaks every 1.5 years which is great when you plan long vacations... The console is not working anymore, several switches (mirrors, rear door opener, washer interval, CD Changer system never worked...), Belt tensioner breaks every 1.5 years and every mechanic tells you that, but Chrysler doesn''t do a thing! Chrysler dealer will not do one hand move without payment even when they are working on the car and would see a loose cable. Modell is 1993 and it took seven years and Daimler (good german mechanics) to finally send out very important recalls. Avoid Chrysler and Dodge. |
