rugged lots of room.runs great as long as basic maintenance is kept up.oil, tune ups.
Weakness:
front ends, idler arms and balljoints need to be replaced fairly early in its life.replace with moog problem solver front end replacement parts.fixes it forever.the outer edgewear is easily fixed.once front end parts are replaced.the alignment needs to changed.gm runs lots of positive camber on wheel alignment. i get them as close to "0" on camber as i can. then i set the toe at +0.06 total toe fixes tire wear problems and i think makes them drive better great van im an alignment technician.bought van from customer of mine.best car ever bought. hauling/ towing lg boat/people mover/great visibility/ good ecomony--This was one tough truck
Weakness:
Steering wonders and requires staying on top, particulary in wind. Bought this in 96 took 17k mi trip with flawless performance. Front end drift is a problem because of chevy's relaxed spec on the idler arms. Moog not available for awd, but problem improved after changing with after market parts. Service done at Town and Country Chevy- made this a pleasant experience and I'll be replacing it soon! At over 122k, it Runs just like the day I got it Similar Products Used: gmc van & chevy pu's. |

Astro cargo van
Strength:
Dependable starting Large uninterrupted cargo space Tight turning/maneuverability Easy to park and garage Powerful V6 acceleration
Weakness:
Tire wear Leg room Rattles/wind noise I leased a new Astro the year they appeared. It was the perfect size for my music equipment, big enough to carry everything but small enough to fit in my garage, and in hotel parking garages. Five years later I turned it in for a lease on a new 1990. After five years, I bought it on payments, and I still have it. So I've been driving Astros for 17 years, probably as long or longer than anyone. It's still the best tradeoff I can find as far as cargo capacity versus garage-ability. I'm thinking of buying new again even though it has only 123,000 miles, and I can't find anything to compare. My only concern is trading the "devil I know" for the unknown new vehicle, even a new Astro. All of the well-known complaints are true. Tight leg room, rattles, wind noise, excessive tire wear. The upgraded sound system failed after only a year, although I blame the dealer rather than Chevy for the shoddy upgrade. I have had to replace electrical parts more often than I thought I should. I've never had the clunking transmission, so maybe the fluid is (correctly) the synthetic type and I was just lucky. But despite the problems, I think it is an excellent vehicle overall. It has started dependably and offered terrific acceleration in tight situations on the Interstate, even when fully loaded. I don't recommend driving it anywhere in high wind, though, unless it is FULLY loaded to help keep the rear end on the road. One note - I think the Astro has gotten a bum steer from Consumer Reports. It's a fine cargo vehicle but unfortunately CR tends to judge everything on how it suits family use. Chevy is also to blame, of course, for trying to market it as a passenger van when they should have let it shine as what it is, a big box on wheels that can be counted on to keep turning through lots and lots of miles. Strength:
Roomy, practical, simple rear wheel drive. Dutch doors are handy. Nice high view. Thankful I could do 99% of repairs myself - otherwise I wouldn''t be happy!
Weakness:
Power in mountains sucks - non Vortec. My 89 celebrity had more guts. Rear end clunking sounds junky. Owned for 4 years like the roominess for kids and camping. Starting to rattle in door panels - flimsy plastic grommets holding lock linkage in place. Clunks a bit from 1st to second gear. Plugged vent on rear differential caused rear wheel seals to leak - found out after new seals started to leak of course. Power mirrors and door locks died - terrible problem with wiring breaking where it flexes between door and body. Windshield wiper motor had cracked solder joint on the printed circuit board which made it work intermittantly or not at all. Passenger leg room - lousy for anyone over 5''4" tall. Never idles perfectly smooth at any time. |

Astro Van
Strength:
Air conditioning and heating work very well, could easily toast the inside in the winter and freeze out in the summer
Weakness:
Bad design all around. Death trap. Do not buy unless you know how to fix door handle wires. I am not the only one with the door handle problem. Lousy van. There should be several recalls on this van. The radiator is a bad design can be fixed for a while (till summer arrives for $1000) will never stay fixed, forget replacement you will have the same problem if you buy the same type of radiator. The door locks are a major safety hazard. If the temp gets below 0 you will begin poping the cables off so you will not be able to open the doors from the outside. (I will probably report this). NO DOOR HANDLE ON THE INSIDE BACK DOOR!!! (the cable is currently popped and can not be opened at all) This could make it a DEATH trap in an accident!!! The front tires wear unevenly. The braking system feels hard like you need to really step on it to make the vehicle stop. Replaced the brakes but still has that stiff feel. Gas milage is about average for a minivan (I have had 3 and they are about the same still bad). The rearview mirror just fell off the window one cold day bad glue? The drivers side window switch is bad it will control the drivers side but the passanger side will only go down not up (can be rolled up on passanger side switch)Over all gm should recall this model. The windshield seems bad too. Hard to tell if the windshield is at fault but a small rock from a passing truck actually cracked the window in half vertically top to bottom. front end, trans shifting, ride, interior small noises(rattles) and noise,, GM DEALER SERVICE!! Im used to ford bought van because only thing avail simular to my ford aerostar 1993,, 122k,, traded in on this van,, 3rd day i had van made my semi monthly trip to daughters college,,250 miles,, I called dealer next morning to complain about slight vibration at steering wheel and at floor,, also van drifts at highway speeds.service dept insisted i wait until 3000 miles.. following week i took daughter back to school 250 miles problems or what i thought were unusual for new vehicle persisted,, i called dealer again,, still wanted me to wait,, took to another gm dealer i deal with ,, they told me everything was all right this is way van drives,,, IM dissapointed i bought a 28000 van and traded in ford and it drove better and only a little bit more road noise and wind sway... at 122k miles... now at 1300 miles im starting to hear small interior rattles, and trans seems to be shifting a little harder.. i deal with ford dealers in my business,, truck equip.. I wish i would have settled for smaller windstar from blue oval ford dealer,, even though i wanted astro because size and thought truck like build would make it tighter than front wheel drive minivans.. im very dissapointed with dealers response to my complaints about vans front end... and wish i had read this site and took this van for highway 1 hour or more test drive(rented one),, around block test drive doesnot help... Chevy Astro
Strength:
Very roomy, and tough. It always starts for me in the morning - no matter how cold.
Weakness:
Winter driving sucks - I get stuck alot because the back is not heavy enough. Passenger lacks leg room. Front tires get chewed on outside edges. Side sliding door latch broke. Rear door locks needed replacing. Very impressed with amount of money I have had to put into it over the past 6 years, considering it''s an ''86. The air conditioning stopped working years ago, so I wish back windows opened. The muffler rusted off after 14 years, which isn''t bad. For a 16-year old van, it is 95% rust-free with 170,000 km on it. |

Lots of cargo room. Good towing capability
Weakness:
Coolant system sucks Poor customer relations by Chevy Enough minor and major headaches to keep you in and out of the repair shop on fairly regular basis. This vehicle performed until about six months after the 30,000 warranty expired. So far I have dealt with the following: Front tires consistently wear excessively on the outside edges. No amount of balancing alleviates this problem Drivers side power window motor is defective. Window sometimes goes down and then won''t come back up. Have been through two radiators. In both cases the coolant system became chocked with rust. The first time Chevrolet replaced the radiator free of charge. 14 months after replacing this radiator it was once again plugged full of rust. Only this time this created a domino effect and the water pump went out. Chevrolet would not fix the problem the second time. Every mechanic I have spoken to all insist that the "red" coolant that Chevy uses is junk. The air conditioning line running to the rear of the vehicle was improperly installed and rubbed through necessitating a complete replacement to the tune of $500 The sliding door comes off track despite repeated repairs The rear hatch piston has gone out three times and had to be replaced. I do not recommend Chevy products given the above and the less than personal service rendered by various Chevy dealerships when it comes to repairs. |
