Strength:

Driver positioning, nice and high great view of the road. Very versitile vehicle ie. kid`s, sport`s, trip`s.Lot`s of space.

Weakness:

Dosent like to start very much. It`s like Russian roulette every time i try to start my van every morning. If it start`s in the morning im ok until the next day. Like`s to chew up front tire`s, front end part`s, braking system is a very poor design. Transmission sound`s like it`s on the edge. Paint is staring to peel just under the driver and passenger door`s. the rear door lock has been replaced twice. Driver door and rear door handle`s have been replaced. My differential cover and front seal are leaking(cover is rusted right through). Dash board has SES light on almost all the time. ABS light comes and goes periodically. Airbag light came on to stay. Thhis vehicle has probably without exageration 500-600 miles put on behind a tow truck, thank GOD for CAA my buddies.Mechanic`s havent a clue what`s wrong with this vehicle. It remains a mystery after thousand`s of spent dollar`s.

Great all around vehicle when it is running.I love driving my astro van, but again the key word here is when it is running.

Strength:

8 passenger seating. Very durable so far. Great handling. Good for driving long distances.

Weakness:

Poor gas mileage. Our 95 AWD got excellent gas mileage. 20 to 25 mpg on the highway. Coupled with a 27 gallon gas tank.

This is the 2nd Astro we have owned. The first was a 1995 AWD. Unfortunately, we no longer have it. We really liked it! It was also an 8 passenger van. So when we decided to get another van, my wife wanted another Astro. I knew we couldn''t afford another AWD model. I didn''t think we would even be able to afford another Astro? Especially in our price range! So when my sister called and said that they had found an Astro in Sioux City, which is 90 miles North of where we live, I was a little skeptical! She described it to me, and it sounded okay. We went up the following Tuesday and looked at it, and also drove it. We both liked it, even if it was a "stubby" version. It only had 99,000 miles on it at the time. We didn''t have the money at that time. We finally were able to go back up on March 8th, and pay cash for it. My wife drove it home. We really like it so far!

Strength:

Power / Room

Weakness:

Internal transmission parts are assembled with rivets not nuts/bots. Loose rivets caused my tranny to fail. A $2000 repair at less that 60,000 miles. My 2001 Astro w/25,000 miles is starting to show the same symptoms. I going to unload the 2001 before it dies.

Decent cargo van until the transmission blew at 60,000 miles!

Fit and finish Too much plastic. Other car manufacturers have figured out how to make plastic not look and sound so cheap. General Motors, definitly not on the cutting edge.

PURE JUNK!!! Rattles everywhere but mainly in the dash and doors. There is a low frequency rumble somewhere in the back. Wind noise galore. Uncomfortable driver seat that seems to be "designed" for everybody but turned out to be for nobody. The seat front edge hits on the back of the leg a good 3" behind the knee making for painful road trips. The only reason I have possession of this poor excuse for a vehicle is that it''s a company car. The other selections were equally as miserable.

at 43,000 miles, too many wierd things going wrong.Drivers side window motor seems to be defective.

All in all a good vehicle, lots of room for kids, great for travel. Have had a few of the problems others have,ie: tire ware, drivers side window motor dying (which leads me to believe there should be a recall if this many people have the same problem with the newer models), rear window lock failing, leak in rear window, clunk in rear-end (nobody knows what to do about that) goes into second gear very hard after the engine gets hot (not looking foward to that bill). I can''t complain about the ride, it is after all a truck, rattles, well. i''d rather be in this then a MINIMINIvan. Has anybody had to get the freaken Check engine light to go off?

Strength:

High of the ground. "Its not a unibody" Its a truck and has a chasis. Passenger and cargo capacity

Weakness:

Two problems I have experienced on the 93 seem to have been corrected on newer models. The gas fill door stuck, the release for the dutch doors failed. These appear to be simplified in the newer models. Also the leg room for the front passenger

The best tow vehicle on the road. This is my second AWD. I had a short box Safari before this one. The AWD is a must for control and traction in any condition. My current van has over 360KLM a lot of them towing a bass boat. The AWD is excellent for soft or steep boat ramps. This current model is the LT and is a real treat for the family on long trips. (bench w/ individual reclining seats. Capacity is great, with seats removed, you can put full size 4 X 8 foot sheets of plywood. Other than standard brake pads and mufflers the vehicle ows me nothing. Feed is gas - change the oil on a regular basis and it will go forever

V6 POWER, ROOMINESS, FEELING OF SAFETY

Weakness:

TRANSMISSION, AUTO BELT TENSIONER, FUEL GAUGE, HORN, THROTTLE BODY, ELECTRIC WINDOW MOTORS, ENGINE MONITORING SYSTEM, AUDIO SYSTEM

We bought the Astro Van because we needed more room for our ever-growing family. It was used with approximately 44,000 miles on it. Currently it is at 90,000 miles. I view the time spent with our Astro as a "Love - Hate" type relationship. At times, we love it. At times, we hate it. I like the power of the 4.3 V6. There is plenty of room for the three kids plus luggage. I like the overall driving experience of the Astro, when I am in my "Love it" mode. My wife says she feels safe in the van because of it''s size. (Bigger than the other mini-vans.) Unfortunately, I feel like there has been too many "Hate it" times and these times have been coming more and more frequently. The best thing we did when buying the van was paying for an extended warranty. Although it provided a little piece of mind, it in no way made up for the horrible service provided by the dealer where I purchased the van. I have had the transmission replaced once and it seems as if it may need it again. It shifts seriously hard at times. The auto belt tensioner broke while driving at 70 mph, throwing the belt and causing a loss of the power accessories. (Scary) I have received countless recall notices for what seems like minor problems. I experienced the failed window motor problem others have spoke of but found a fantastic fix for it. For $40.00 at any Autozone you can get a lifetime guaranteed motor that will bolt in with four bolts. The entire audio system is of poor quality. The service engine light comes on sporadically. The dealer says nothing is wrong. (Although he tried to squeeze us $256.47 for spark plug wires.) I politely refused. The fuel gauge reads what ever it wants whenever it wants. The dealer says nothing is wrong. The horn will blow whenever it wants. The dealer says nothing is wrong. Currently, I am having the brake problem for the second time and the van shuts off when you turn too far to the left. How far? Whatever the van decides. I tried to trade the van in at another Chevrolet dealer but he wouldn''t give me any trade in value because and I quote, "Your van isn''t worth anything." My experiences with my dealer has certainly had negative effects on my pride of ownership. I am a an engineer by trade and take care of my vehicles carefully. With the Astro, I feel like I am losing the war.

We evaluated lots of mini-vans, most of which were smaller and less powerful. I wonder if it was a fair trade off in overall quality.

Brakes, Squeeks, rattles, and poor gas mileage. Come on GM Make the Van better All around i know you can do it.

My 98 Astro AWD is the 2nd Astro i have owned. Traded a 1988 RWD with 116,000 miles on it on the 98 Astro with 45,000 miles on it. I must agree with other reviews on the van that they are noisy and the brakes need to be upgraded on future astro models. but what can you exspect from a box bolted to a truck frame. The AWD is wonderful in the snow and wet pavement. New Astros, I think are a bit pricey. GM tries to add creature comforts to the van but all in all i think they should spend more time getting the rattels and sqeeks out of it and make it a more dependable vehical. its larege size and people capacity are excellent. it''s not big or small its a great mid size van. if you are looking to buy an Astro i suggest finding a All Wheel Drive extended version. the extra room in back is wonderful. oh and get the Dutch doors. visability is wonderful compared to the cargo doors. size and AWD made me buy a astro van. i have ridden in $45,000 Suburbans and listened to them rattle and sqeek. the same with a Tahoe.

Tough Van, took a lot of abuse. Can fit 23 people carefully. Two wheel drive with limited slip was good for off roading and great in winter.

Weakness:

LT seats weren''t that tough. Reclining seats gears stripped. To fix drill hole through seat frame and put a pin in it.

Bought in Canada. Had it to 169,000km. Ran great, but needed few repairs. Had limited slip rear end which caused 3 new differentials, one new drive shaft, new front end, new rear axle. Van was beaten pretty hard and it lasted. Glad I didn''t get a Ford.
