Model Reviewed: ASTRO VAN

Strength:

Lots of cargo room.

Weakness:

Need I say more

I would not buy another ASTRO VAN. This is my second one and the first I thought provided me good service, but this one has been a lemon from the start and I have gotten no satisfaton or response from the dealer ship or GM. It is noisy and it has a bad rear axle. The electric windows have both gone bad. The electric locks sometimes work. Too many probelms in too short of time. Did I mention it is a gas guzzler?

Strength:

It does have good cargo room, and lots of room for hauling people. Beyond that, I can think of no other strengths.

Weakness:

Where do I start?.. VERY loud. Very rough driving. Poor economy. Did I mention it was loud?

I can't believe the Astro has this high a rating. We couldn't wait to get rid of ours. And my brother in law felt the same way! We just traded in on a 2003 grand caravan and the difference is uncomparable. Why did we wait so long??

Strength:

Excellent towing and heavy load hauling. The extended versions, huge difference over the short ones.

Weakness:

door handles!!!!!!!! Difficult to access the engine from the inside of the van on 1998 & 2000. Too many bolts to undo.

This is the fourth Astro cargo van I have had. I have had a 1993, 1995, 2000, and now this 1998. The earlier ones I have had no problems with, ran them both to near 500,000kms. The two late models I have had a few minor elestrical problems and front end problems, but nothing serious yet.

Strength:

Lotta space - Seats like in my living-room at home - with the Astro there's no need to hurry

Weakness:

NONE - except expensive spare-parts in Germany - so I have to get it from the Staates

This is my second Astro. The first I bought in 1994 and I had it for 5 years. I really loved it! I'm am musican and my Astro had a lot of space for my music equipment. In between my first an my second Astro I had a Honda Legend and a Mercedes Benz T-Modell (Station) but thers is nothing to compare with the Astro. So I got me another one. Now I'm happy again! There are not too many Astros running in Germany - so everybody knows me and my car!

Strength:

Everything has been excellant, I've never had a problem with my van.

Weakness:

None!

I absolutely love my van! I have never had any problems with it! I was lucky to get this vehicle for the price, because my sister wanted another newer van, and I wanted more room. I bought this after using a chevy cavalier 2 door for years, and I will never buy any other vehicle that is not a chevy! I have plenty of space, and no problems with the electrical system, or brakes, engine, power everything.... which includes the windows, brakes, seats, security system etc .

Strength:

reliability, towing capacity

Weakness:

it's not the coolest looking vehicle,

I bought this high miler (210000kms)to get me trough the winter, that was 5 years ago, it now has 550000 kms and it it still going pretty strong, the bigest problem I've ever had with it is a fuel pump failure. It's had regular oil changes and that is about it, it is by far the best vehicle I have ever owned and I still trust it to do 3000 km trips

Strength:

Good towing abilitys, with power to spair.

Weakness:

The quickest wearing part of the Astro is the front suspension.

Bought the Astro in 1993 as a low milage used van. I have never been stranded in the past 10 years because of the service. At 193,000 miles I replaced a water pump. At 216,000 miles I had to replace an alternator. At 242,000 the fuel pump went out plus I have always kept up with scheduled maintenance. She now has an excess of a quarter of a million and still has a good paint job, sound body with miniminal sqeeks. The 4.3 V-6 is one of the best if not the best V-6 on the market. I can still top better than 100 mph right up there with the best of them and only have to reach through the window to start her up. Better than any Ford or Dodge I have ever owned which never exceeded 100,000 miles befor I had to traid it off or spend all my spair time performing maintenance. My next van will also be a Chevy. Strength:

Lots of space, towing capacity, power, comfort, price

Weakness:

poor interior materials cause squeeking and rattles. Dealer told me that they could do nothing as all Astros are this way. Contant electrical issues with door locks and windows. Also, door handles and latches are weak and break regularly

Overall a good vehicle. Lots of space for the family, and excellent for use as a tow vehicle. Only mid size van with 5000 lb tow cap. We tow our pop-up camping trailer without any problems. The van has constant quality issues. Every electric door lock has been replaced at least once. Pwr window motor as well. Dash plastics are bad and contantly squeek and moan. Motor and trans are bulitproof.

This is my third Astro. Had an 85 and a 92. Also had a Dodge Caravan - I would NOT recommend the dodge for towing due to weak transmission.
