Strength:

roomier than a tahoe, tows well,ok power for a v6,very reliable engine

Weakness:

pass legroom sucks, minor rattles, front suspension too soft, clutch fan noisy, egr valve sticks sometimes ( I just drop it in low and floor it and rev as high as it goes and it unsticks)

125,000 miles not a puff of smoke when starting up, no leaks thanks to synthethic oil evry 300 miles its been a great van Ive had it for 4 yrs, I''ve added front and rear sway bars and edelbrock shocks so it hanles and rides much better than stock also it keeps the tires wearing very even, the only problems were a coolant leak at the int manifold, and a new radiator I know it will go well past 200,000 miles as my last one. overall its been an exellent vehicle.

Strength:

Good gas milage Good leg room except for front passenger seat

Weakness:

To many to name all but repairs are too costly and frequent would be at the top of my list.

We have had numerous problems with this van. Multiple a/c compressors; transmission leakage; broken door handles and doors not sealing just to name a few. We baby our vehicle. Regular maintenance and tune-ups. Really expected more out of the vehicle than it has offered. Would not buy another one.

Strength:

4.3 Vortech is dependable, with good power. Van rides like a larger vehicle, and gives a "safe" feeling.

Weakness:

Front brakes wear fast, van is prone to little noises from everywhere

I previously owned a 1986 Astro, and traded it in with 280k miles on it. i was impressed that the van lasted that long (it wasn''t pretty, but it ran and drove) and looked specifically for an Astro or safari when I was shopping for a replacement. The 1997 has better leg room for the passenger, and of course, the power accessories all work. I can only guess at part of the reason for the thunking when the transmission shifts (I don''t have AWD): it''s a chevy. I have a camaro with the same transmission, and I get the same noise. It doesn''t bother me, because I know all the fluid levels are fine, and it doesn''t seem to adversely affect anything. I do agree with everyone else in here, tho, that the front brakes are under-sized, and wear excessively.

Strength:

Design, solid engine and good on gas. The customizing company did a great job on their design too.

Weakness:

Leg room on passenger side. Getting used to the ABS braking system, and occassional wind noise.

Since I owned an 1990 Astro Van before buying my current one, I only had one big complaint: the seating arangement. I wanted more leg room for the front seat passenger and a couch that either reclined or folded down! It was February 1996 when my husband and I decided to buy a new vehicle. We looked at lots of vans and either I didn''t like how low they were or the interior didn''t impress me. We looked at full size vans but they wouldn''t fit into our garage and they have poor gas mileage. We were out one day and happened by this dealership with customized vans in the parking lot and stopped in. They were having a deal on all their new left over 1995 Asto Vans. Well I was really hoping to purchase a 1996 because that year they changed the dash which gave the passenger more leg room! However, once a good deal was mentioned my husband focused on that. Once I saw the interior of these left over vans, I knew it was me. The company who did the work was Rockwood, and the interior layout was perfect for our three girls. The four captain chairs recline, the couch also folds down into a bed. There is a TV/VCR center on the floor between the two front seats (which was a lifesaver for out trip to Texas, Florida and all those long trips to Buffalo, NY!!! Venting in the back for AC/Heat, cup holders, blinds, roof rack & running boards so grandma has no trouble getting in. I currently have 112,000 miles on it and I don''t want a new one, I''m determined to get to 200,000 miles. Our engine has been fine, we really are disciplined with our oil changes and check ups. The interior is still immaculate, when we purchased it I put clear plastic runners over the carpet for the bad weather. I love my van and so does our family.

Strength:

Plenty of power for my uses and I can get away with driving really slow.

Weakness:

Blasted doors and keys. Lousy GM supplied tires.

I Like my Astro. I use it in a gardening business and haul a 10 foot trailer with about a thousand pounds of gear roughly 150 kilometres a day all summer. No problems with performance except for a 700 dollar transmission or shift deal that was quickly resolved. The mechanid did, however, manage to knock a vacuum line asunder somewhere in the bowels of the dashboard and now I control my A/C with a piece of string that I tied to the flap in the ductwork. I got a free pointy hook tool that was left inside after the "surgeon" closed. Tires sure wear out fast and I did have to get my front end done at around 100 000 km. The back doors are a real pain in my gluteals. Every year I have to shell out $70.00 or so to replace the latch handle; it keeps breaking off in my hand (I am not a monster, I am a human being) Is there an adjustment I can make to the door latch? The dealer just shrugs. The left hand door won''t open unless i thump it at the top as I pull the latch, and the right hand door won''t close unless I really slam it hard, several times. The keys wont lock the doors, only unlock them, and I can''t use the radio in accessory mode because the key won''t turn all the way to that setting. It''s kind of hard to get the key to turn to start too. Perhaps a new key will help, if I could just get the code from some database. I like it though.

I''m sick of this van. I bought it and had it converted into a wheelchair van because my son is in a w/c. The conversion cost me an extra $8500 on top of the cost of the van. My payments are $300 a month for 10 years. It has 29,000 miles on it and so far I''ve had to replace all 4 tires, drop in a new transmission and as we speak, it''s getting a brake job. The dealer shrugged and said he guessed it wasn''t made to handle all the extra weight (the conversion). Why didn''t they tell me this when I bought it. I can''t afford to drive it any place because the gas mileage is lousy and the payments are so high.
