Van was used and had 124.000 miles at time of purchse. My husbands inspection showed no visable damage to engine or other exterior machincal parts that would indicate problems. But in just over 30 days the engine blew and metal ruined the crank shaft and other damage. A machanic said these vehicals have such a history and are known to go out at about 125.000 miles.

Strength:

great power (as long as AC is off), storage room, holds almost unlimited amounts of people, always works (not neccesarily well)

Weakness:

this van is definately a utility vehicle, not comfy at all

I love my DisAstro Van, we've had so many good times, but the after turning 100,000, its falling to pieces. Tape players busted, cruise controls busted, speakers are blown out, egr valves half clogged, smells like burnt stuff, gotta have the heat on to keep the engine from overheating, fuses blow randomly every few months, brakes make worrisome noises.

Granted, Its been driven really hard since ive gotten a hold of it. Despite all the problems, its never broken down on me. I love my van, and would trust it with my life

Strength:

Interior room. You can take out the seats and put a sheet of 4 x 8 plywood inside and close the rear doors. Truck frame so it is strong. Good engine. Rides like a truck because it is.

Weakness:

Transmission is bad. Does not feel strong. Does not kick down to lower gear when gas pedal is stepped on. Chevy got rid of the outside armrests on both fromt seats; not a good idea. I used them alot and liked them. Looking into installing 1998 seats to get those back.

Good. Had a 1998 Astro. Drove it for 80k with no problems until the end before trading it in for the 2001. Our experience with the Astro has been positive overall. Good capacity, good towing, mileage good for the size and weight. When first recieved, the roof rack, installed by the dealer (?) was not installed properly, was misssing screws, paint was scratched, and looked like it had been used. I fixed it myself. Good alternative for an SUV.

1998 Astro. The 1998 felt stronger in the transmission area. The 1998 and 2001 are very similar.

Strength:

The Astro can haul people and cargo without using huge amounts of fuel: it genuinely gets 20mpg on the highway. It's also relatively rugged: I drove it to Belize, Central America and back with only a minor coolant leak. Without 4-wheel drive, and only a limited-slip rear differential it negotiated Jeep/Landrover terrain without ever grounding itself or getting stuck (although with 2-wheel drive you have to keep the speed up in slippery conditions). Although marketed as a family van for suburban housewives, the Astro's truck heritage makes it an acceptable semi-SUV. GM would sell more of these if they changed their marketing strategy and bolted them together a little better.

Weakness:

The ride can be punishing on rough roads. Its long-term reliability record is a little disconcerting. Mine has had a typical Astro problem: tire wear, and refusing to go in a straight line. This was remedied by buying decent tires (Dunlop SP40s), and a careful alignment job, which has held for 10,000 miles now. Sears in two states made alignment attempts that did little or nothing. I also believe that if I had stayed in Belize too long the Astro would have fallen apart. Only a handful of Toyota models don't fall apart under these conditions, however, so it's not that serious a criticism.

The Astro is the only available new vehicle combining a reasonable purchase price (in 1997 I paid $19,000 for an 8 passenger base version), and excellent cargo and people hauling capacity without extreme compromises in gas mileage or maneuverability. Front wheel drive minivans don't quite have the space or cargo capacity. This said, this model has rather poor long-term reliability. If Toyota offered the Hiace, or Mitsubishi the Delica in the US market I would not have purchased the Astro. These Japanese vans have the space and gas mileage along with better reliability, and it's a real shame that they are not offered in the US. As it stands, the Astro occupies a unique niche in the US marketplace, and I would recommend it despite its reliability problems. Mine has held up well for 50,000 miles. I'm not quite so confident about the next 50,000.

Strength:

Love the size and the fact that it is trucklike in regards to hauling lots of stuff or towing. Avg. 20MPG on interstate which is suprising given its old design and boxy styling.

Weakness:

Too wide, truck like ride. Only one door. Crash test picture at www.highwaysafety.org was scary.

This is a Astro LS AWD, MSRP was 29k. I would only recommend it if you are planning on towing or hauling large loads. It is big and that is an understatement. I would call it a 'shortened' full size van. We have had no problems other than a transmission shudder that was solved via a TSB at the dealer, they installed a synthetic differential fluid.

Strength:

Engine runs good. Quiet and comfortable ride. After taking the very heavy seat out good room for hauling stuff inside. Trim and fit good. Tows my 19 foot boat pretty good for a V6 engine.

Weakness:

Poor leg room for front seats...Tires always are waring on the edges although front aligned....Removable seats very heavy...Drivers seat is difficult to move to a comfortable position. Front brakes undersize and will heat up ans smell if pushed just a little hard (like going down hill with a trailer)

Now the bad part( milage now at 70,000 miles)....Transmission blew up at 39K miles $2500...Air cond line chaffed through and lost all freon $400 for a new line when it was positioned to rub on something that would cause a hole...On the second set of rear hatch struts to hold the hatch up...Drivers window motor broke...wipers don't always come on when the switch is turned on ... front tires always wear on the edges...fuel pump quit on LA freeway...rear saged a LOT when towing my boat had to get air bag lifts...front shocks gone 65K miles (maybe not that bad)...Extended warentee a MUST....I did NOT get one and suffered for it.

Had VW vans and a Ford van after boat purchase. This is definately an upgrade in comfort and noise reduction. Full size Ford had no problems towing (but poor gas mileage for day use) By far Astro is the worst for mechanical failure ever owned.
