Cute. But that doesn't get you very far!

Weakness:

Everyting. Rattles inside and out. ELETRONIC problems, too numerous to mention. Because of the deafening sound, can't open moonroof without having one of the side windows open a crack. That's not right. It's a LEMON.

The worst car I have ever owned. The check engine light, amoung other lights, keep coming on and I have to take it in for service to reset the electronical system. Once, my car wouldn't start because of this problem and had to have the car towed in. Unreliable. I bought this car thinking that it would last me for about 10 years like my 1989 HOnda Accord. WRONG!! I will be trading the car in within the next couple of weeks. Will purchase either a Toyota or Honda. I WILL NEVER BUY ANOTHER VW. It's yellow and it sure turned out to be a LEMON. Service department sucks. When my car had to be towed in, the customer service person, kept arguing and telling me it was my battery. It turned out to be something completely different. NO apology. We have never had any problems with our Hondas either the car or service department. That speaks for itself. DON'T BUY A NEW BEETLE AND WASTE YOUR MONEY......... Can't wait to get rid of it!

Strength:

Solid feeling, and safe gas mileage (esp at todays rates) comfortable (I'm only 5ft though) at 54,000 never been in the shop for repairs

Weakness:

interior impossible to keep clean cup holders positioned all wrong some plastic parts inside the interior keep coming off. We just snap them back in

I purchased my vw in oct 2001 it was used with 19,500mi on it. I have not had any major problems to date (knock on wood) At 50,000mi the back brake pads were replaced by my husband at about 35.00. One head light did go out and he also replaced that for about 12.00. To date I have 54,000 mi on her and no major problems. I agree the interior sucks to keep clean, especially the tan and having kids and pets. I put seat covers on them and good as new. Yesterday my door ajar and lights on chime came on while I was driving the intersate. The lights were not on and the door was not ajar, hmmm. Could be one of those electrical problems I've been reading about. However, this morning all was well. My plan is if it keeps doing it I'll have my husband disconnect the chime. I have not had any other problmes at all. Of course the girl that bought it new and traded it in after a year (wondering about that now) maybe she had all the problems and if she did I hope she got them fixed. Windows are fine, trunk latch is fine, the check engin light has never come on. So far I would have to say of all the cars I've had, Fords, Nissans, Hyundai, Chevy's I have had no more problems with this car than those. Again at 54,000 and 3 years of hard driving I'm still on the same factory tires, plan to replace them this spring though, had one plugged and the guy at the Tire Kingdom couldn't believe how well they had worn and long they had lasted. I have to say right now I'm satisfied but lets see how it goes in the next 3 years while I'm still paying for it. Oh, and my extended warranty is over!!I'm praying the problems will not start....

Strength:

Very comfortable for driver and passenger.Car has a sense of being larger then what it is. Very sure handling. Really enjoy the sunroof with the aftermarket deflector.Great sound system(Monsoon). The A/C works at a 10/10 rating in my hot dry summer climate. If I had to do it over again would have purchased the 1.8 Turbo or Turbo s.

Weakness:

IMHO, the 2.0 litre engine should be purchased with the manual transmission. This engine is just acceptable. I am averaging 24.5 mpg, seems a little low for a car of this size. Dealer service is expensive. Paid $49 for an air filter (installed).Dealer is great, just pricey.

I must be one of the few who have not had a problem with this model. Purchased used in Oct. 2002 with 10,400 miles. As of Jan. 2004 has 22,500 miles. I have had no problems with the car. It is not driven hard, gets Oil/Filter changes every 3,000 miles and regular hand washes and waxings.

Worst car I have ever owned. Lots of electrical problems. If I let the car sit over the weekend I can't get it started. Headline fell down. Interior lights and instrument lights work on occassion. The gas filler door will not open. Just recently the tranny is slipping. I've been back and forth to VW with out any luck. Buy a Ford.

Am leasing. Lease is up in March and I definately will not be buying it. I am expecting a huge fight when I list the things that I am not paying for and when I fight for my full security deposit back. 1. Door handles started peeling within 6 months of owning the car. 2. Gas cap does not pop up properly and hasn't since 3 months into lease 3. Booked appointment for freebie oil change and sat in service bay for 2 and a half hours! 4. Rear brakes completely worn after 40000km 5. Severe blindspots 6. Trunk too small 7. Glove compartment heavy to close and too small 8. Original tires were very poor quality 9. Had emissions test (have to have one every 3 years in order to renew plates on car). Passed with highest rating but 2 weeks later "check engine/emmissions" light came on. Then went off. Then came on. etc., etc., 10. Now car is starting to stutter from time to time. I received a booklet about what is considered excess wear and tear when returning my car and it differs from my signed lease. Booklet says tire tread must be 3.3mm, lease says 3.2mm. Booklet says tires must be same brand as orignals, lease says ... OR of equal quality (that won't be hard!)

Good in snow Better than walking in the snow Spiffy interior I did use the jack to help install some new floor beams in my garage!

Weakness:

- EVERYTHING RATTLES - everything - terrible clutch feel - terrible gas mileage - repair cost (parts are a fortune) - repair frequency (every three months) - Aluminum wheel design tends to get very scratched up - rocker panels scratch and dent easily - power window (recall) - breaks constantly squeak (replaced twice) - try getting that thing that keeps your seatbelt buckle to stay off the floor - HATCH ---> holy mackerel. Takes the current Governor of California to close it. Plus it rattles like crazy - Stupid VW marketing. If I want to buy a lifestyle I'll buy an Apple computer.

I had to lease this car to work for a local computer company - its a long story. Having driven this car now for 3 years i can accurately say that it really is a high maintenance kind of car. I was always on time with oil changes and service - followed the little sticker on the windshield verbatim. Everytime I took it in for an oil change I ended up paying $500 to get my car back 2 days later. Its going back and I am thankful that it hasn't caused me more trouble or money. Bye Bye Beetle - thanks for the headache!

Very comfortable car. Lots of room. Very user friendly. No major problems as of yet (I won't hold my breath). It's not a Chevy!

Weakness:

Not near as good on gas as I would like (25-28 hwy and 18-20 town.) Handles horribly on ice.

Bought used with 61K miles. Of course no used car is perfect-rear hatch dosen't open from inside, side view mirror adjuster broken insid. Overall very plesent car to have. Lots of room for a small car. Able to have two car seats in the back. My 6'8" father able to fit with no problems and is considering getting one himself. WARNING: this car is so light it is extremely squirmey on ice. Handles great in snow but ice is a major bugger. Not as much get up and go as I would like. A friend has a VW Turbo in his bug and it kicks butt.

Strength:

I am 6'7" and fit perfectly in the Beetle. I wanted a RAV4, Pathfinder, PT Cruiser or similar but all the door frames are too short for me to enter without being a contortionist. Love the fit of the components; everything is good and tight too. Standard CD/casette radio and speakers have a great sound especially when turned up 3/4 or more. Pretty good suspension especially here in NY where we have potholes and uneven road patches.

Weakness:

Since dealer put in recall brake switch ouy brakes have been a little mushy at times.

Our Beetle had 4600 miles when we bought it. The vehicle had set in the owner's garage since his death just 2 months after purchase. We love our Beetle. The quality of our vehicle is excellent. The turbo gives us a good boost when we need it. Vehicle now has 18K+.

Need I say more.......

When I purchased it, the "storage case" above rearview mirror was already broken. Peeling along both doors, frog cracked front grill, I'm on the third hatchback latch, numerous (too many to count) lights have "popped out" of sockets over and over and over, wipers noisy right away, window switches failing, stereo speaker died within 6 mths, gas hog, service calls once a month....if I'm lucky
