Strength:

Strong, easy to park, easy to make turns, fast (but not too fast), excellent brakes, powerful engine.

It is a very dependable car. I bought it -must admit- because my daughter was crazy about it, but it turned out to have an excellent performance in the highways, in bad weather, in winter or summer. I bought it with leather interior and the leather still looks great after 3 years.

Strength:

none what so ever. Not even fun to drive because the weaknesses over-shadow everything else.

Weakness:

It needs a new clutch, the check engine light is on, but no one can figure out why (could be the friggin'' gas cap, for cryin'' out loud), the ABS system is no longer functional, the stereo sometimes works, sometimes does not, the car sometimes starts, sometimes does not, the alternator is going, the electronics are slowly going, one by one. The leather interior has cracked and split because of it''s cheap quality, the seam in the canvas top has split and is now leaking. I had to replace the windshield because I got hit with a stone. The seat for the winshield is almost sompletely rusted through, and will start to leak soon. And to top it all off, you can''t even use the cup holders without removing the ash tray. Geman engineering definately not at it''s finest.

This car is a piece of junk. 1997 Cabrio with 73,000 miles on it. I admit that I got this car from a not at all reputable dealer, but still, the problems are more mechanical than anything. I paid 16,000 too much for this car, and now, 5 months later, I can''t get rid of the thing. I tried to trade it in on a new GMC, but I can''t get anything for it. These cars do not hold their value at all.

Strength:

Good Look, THats IT

Weakness:

Lets see the list goes on, in alabama i had to sign an arbitration agreement, considering this was my first new car, i thought i wouldnt have any problems at least until years down the road, but i was wrong, VW dealership service SUCKS, I would not reccomend anyone signing there death.

Wheres the torch,I hope allstate isnt reading this, this is the worst car i think has ever been developed, lets see where the problem started, 1. long turn over, then service engine light would come on, with only 300 miles on car, been to the shop over 6 times, THE SERVICE IS HORRIBLE, 2. lets see my radio blew out, to find out there was a three month waiting order on radios due to all the cars have the same ones, the car shorted the rado out twice, parking break light would come on , i would pull on the side of the road, put the car in park and the engine would shut off, this is just a few of the 01 possessed cabrio, i have it on a lease to, my 24,000 miles are aboutto go up and im about to be screwed, the other problems are heated seats never worked, recircultion light flashes rapidly, door handles peeling, one dealership JEFF SIKES said it was wear and tear, when thats not true, lets see air conditioning wouldnt work one day, i turned the car off and took out the key and it came on, I THINK CABRIO IS POSSESSED.

Strength:

Girls love this car. Gas mileage could be a plus (32 highway) Looks good... drives ok, tight steering (but the steering whines a lot) Top down is fun. Bigger than it looks. Good interior detail.

Weakness:

Girls love this car. 115 HP... yeah right... more like 80 or 90. Shoddy build quality. You have to take the ash tray out to use the cup holders.

Hmmm... well, let''s start by saying that this car is a piece of junk, and I am a dude who knows how to work on cars. It is fun to drive with the top down, but that''s it. I have put 10k miles on this car in 3 months, and only about 10 mi. of that has been care free. The parts and service for this car are very expensive. So, be prepared to either put money into it, or trade it in after about 3 months. I have tried to fix this car up, but I can''t afford to. This car sucks your wallet dry when things go bad... and boy have things gone bad. After a legal battle to get the Used Dealer to fix some minor stuff, here is what happened.... The transmission leaks and is starting to slip (and I am worried about that), the ABS comes on all the time when breaking and some times when driving, the seam in the convert top is splitting, the oil pan is leaking (giving my land lord an excuse to keep my security check), the interior lights sometimes work, sometimes don''t, the engine has absolutely no pick up power with more than just the driver in the car, and that seems to have gotten worse since I changed the oil last. Take a look under the hood... I have seen go-carts and dune buggies with larger engines... In fact, the battery is about the size of the motor, and the alternator takes up the rest of the space.

Strength:

Solidly built, handles great, tight steering, good design, rides better than bigger domestics, very quiet for a convertible, comfortable seats, excellent roadster and touring car, fun, been told it's "cute" way too many times...

Weakness:

Steering wheel seems too far away and only adjusts vertically, stereo is so-so, no remote release for trunk or gas (gas is non-locking anyway), cruise control lacks an "acceleration" feature, people who buy one of these with a black interior are nuts (can you say "rolling microwave" ?), won't win any grand prixs but it's not made for that, truly useless cupholders, not much else...

We've only had our Cabrio a couple of weeks so this may be premature. But in our first week with a 1999 Cabrio GLS w/40k miles on it, my wife and I took it into the Smokey Mountains for a vacation of driving fun, and it handled everything we threw at it perfectly. We came away from the experience very pleased. The Cabrio has very good steering and braking, and the front wheel drive is a blessing. It's a real driver's car. You should note that I prepared beforehand with four new Michelin X-1's (their very best) and a four-way wheel alignment which only cost about $50. I highly recommend both: our car had been a lease previously and the original tires showed excessive inside wear. The Cabrio is smooth and responsive, with tight wheel handling similar to Mazdas which I like. Automatic tranny didn't inhibit the fun as much as I thought it would (couldn't find a used 5-speed model anywhere). We compared this car to a 2000 Chrysler Sebring convertible (could have bought for only $3k more), which squeeked and rattled like it was much older, and the Cabrio seemed much more quiet and solid overall and it handled better. Four cylinder 2.0 liter and auto-trans won't win you any races but it's adequate for getting on the interstate easily and is better than some. We were concerned about gas mileage: we got 29 mpg on the highway with no AC and 27 mpg on the highway with AC, which was better than expected. AC is excellent by the way. Stereo could be better (ours has the same problem others have: the volume control sometimes works in reverse). Our Cabrio has a champagne exterior color and matching leather interior and we've had LOTS of compliments on it from total strangers. Tried a similar model with a black interior and it felt smaller and was much hotter (we live on the Southern US coast). Leather seats feel great, especially if you use a good quality leather conditioner on them (also protects them from UV) and there's plenty of room for 6' me. I never intended to buy a VW: I chose this car by searching the internet for late model cars based on reliability, owner satisfaction, economy, and then convertibles: the Cabrio won out based on these preferences. Sure, the Mustang is more popular (my first car was a '65 convertible) but they are not very reliable or economical, and after 25 years of mostly domestic car ownership I'm starting to really question US car quality. The German engineering of the Cabrio is evident, as is the reason so many people prefer it (although mine was actually built in Mexico). If you want more power at the sake of economy you could try the Mitshubishi Spyder, which is the second most popular sports car in the US but it also has some reliability issues. My wife and I didn't want a sports car so we like the Cabrio, and they seem to hold their value well (I'm sure I could sell mine easily if I wanted to). Late model Cabrios seem to be a very good buy for the money so I gave mine a 5 star value rating. But it's not the perfect car (the steering wheel is placed too far forward for my tastes, the stereo seems cheap and there's other minor things I don't like about the design, hence the 4 star overall rating) but for now, it's close enough to perfect for what we wanted in a small convertible for us.

Nice Looking, Soft Top

Weakness:

Quality is very poor. At delivery mine had two major mechanical problems. The brake rotors were bent from improper tire mounting, and the 5-speed transmission was grinding with the clutch depressed.

With 400 miles on the car, I wish that I had bought the Toyota. A new car in the shop is a real bummer. Avoid this one.

Consider a two seater Toyota or Honda. The quality would have to be much better.

One Service guy is embarassed, the other had the nerve to tell me all new cars have bugs...I'm really sorry I bought the Cabrio, I wish I had stuck with the Honda's.
