They saw me coming

Strength:

Style - I call it my mobile tennis shoe; white with the top down, yup looks like a tennis shoe. Decent gas mileage, and safety: I like the roll bar concept and the airbags, and I was told by the salesman, that there is a reinfocing bar along the sides of both doors. Relatively easy to park, and I am in and out of parking garages with very tight parking stalls everyday.

Weakness:

Two door difficult to get into back seat. My doggy hesitates jumping in. Back seat headrests make viewing rear chancey. Seems to be turning signal problems in not just my car -- they're possessed. Sometimes they flash rapidly. Maintenance free battery wasn't. Had to have it replaced.

Had a four year lease on car and purchased the lease to save on mileage costs as I was driving the car so much. Virtually no mechanical problems until 1999 when brakes were leaking: paid over $800.00 and car was under lease? Tires replaced also, seems to be an alignment problem, just had another set put on two months ago. Wear uneven and I checked pressure every week. Like other reviews, check engine light comes on, had checked several times and always comes back unknown code. Tech says computer resets after 14 starts, to ignore it. Hummm.... Irritating rattling sound coming from front driver side; they could never find problem, so I just live with it. The A/C was fantastic; I used to be able to see my breath as I drove to work in the morning, and my sunglasses always fogged up when I emerged from the car. But, like other reviews, front passenger floorboard wet -- A/C leaking, checked but no clog, but I swore I could hear water "swishing" as I took corners. Finally A/C out and will cost $1500.00 for new compressor/repair. RUST! Had to replace windshield as it cracked in two places -- technician determined it was rust and I have the seal to prove it. A friend of mine has exact same car and had exact same problem. Other rust, inside doors -- and I had car rustproofed in addition to factory. Surface rust I can deal with, but from the inside? Is it a manufacturing problem? My car was hecho in Mexico, so much for German craftsmanship. Plastic interior cheap -- cracked within first six months. Stereo speakers lack stereo sound. Rain rushes in from roof if you have the window down (no air conditioning, remember?) apparently funneled by the creases in the roofing. Guess that's what those plastic trays were for on the side of front seats; swimming pools for car critters. Car usually grinds when shifting from first to second gear when cold. No one could ever find anything wrong with it, so I just live with it and ever so gently shift gears. Overall I have enjoyed my driving experience, car handles well, and even tho others reported speed or lack thereof, I was the recipient of a speeding ticket although I contested that the car couldn't go that fast!

Strength:

Cute car, fun to drive, easy top to put up and down.

Weakness:

Mechanical - the dealership tries to make excuses and tries to accuse you of heavy wear and tear, when it isn't the case. I was even told that 1 cabrio out of a million have problems and I must have gotten that car. They definitely don't stand behind their product. I too know all the names of the service managers and I don't want to!!!

Had numerouse problems with this car. Worse problem is with the ignition. Changed ingnition housing in the 1st year and now that the warranty is out, I am still putting in a new ignition switch etc...Recently while I was driving the car lost all power (thank god I wasn't on a freeway or a serious accident would have occured) After towing it in, I found it was my IGNITION again! I just want a car that works! My husband has had 3 Infinitis I-30 and he has never had a single problem. My car has had problems from day 1.

Strength:

Fun car to drive, convertible top is very easy to put up/down.

Weakness:

As mentioned in my review.

I have enjoyed the car, but had problems with the ingnition, from the housing to the switch, has given me constant problems. Some occurred during warranty and other after warranty expired, which makes me guess they never fixed the problem when it was under warranty. Quality of the car inside is excellent. I have several dings in the side of the car and I have noticed that many, many other Cabrios have the same dings/dents in the exact spot. Might be a weakness in the body of the car at that spot.

Strength:

Roomy for a samll car, looks great and despite its lack of power, very good handle. Milage is acceptable and nice car for miami beach (fits where others wont), Good sound sytem.

Weakness:

NO POWER (115 bunnies).parts are very expensive.

I feel very good when I'm driving. The milage is pretty good and despite it's outside noise, it's very confortable and for a small car very roomy (I'm 6'2"). Weak engine, no power but its ok (no speeding tickets). For what I could understand, newer models are more troublefull. Mine is a German version (built in Germany) I dont think they come from Germany anymore.

Excellent Reliability and ease of maintenance, very simple car. The white tops gets discolored and white exterior?xD;?xA;is not ideal for living in the Mid-west, nor is the car. This is my fiance's car and is now ours since I sold my Jetta GLX. We live in the city ?xD;?xA;and do not drive much with occassional out of town drives to Wisconsin for bike races I do. I like the reliability of it and the fact that it's paid for but not very practical.?xD;?xA;Again, I inherited the car and need something else for my purposes. I just hate to spend $309-$40grand on something new when I look at the opportunity cost of that money invested

Strength:

Fun, attractive, and and peppy, it is a great car for a young person like myself. It provides good highway mileage (I commute at least 40 miles everyday), and it lacks windnoise or leaks.

Weakness:

The car has already needs the wheel alignment readjusted, and the seat heater on the passenger side doesn't work, the white top is hard to clean, and the engine has a tendency to run a little loud (this is a tendency of many VWs). The stereo has a "tinny" quality--my old Saturn was better!

I Bought the Cabrio for what most would seem emotional reasons...I have always wanted a convertible, and the Volkswagon seemed like the best model around. I have not been disappointed with my purchase. The car looks great, drives well, is surprisingly roomy and comfortable, and gives me good gas mileage. I have had very few complaints with the car and I know if I ever wanted to sell it...it would retain a good resale value.

Strength:

Maneuverability, Fuel economy, interior size and comfort is amazing for a small car.Enough pep to make the ride fun, without compromising safety or economy. Makes my wife very happy.

Weakness:

Non-to speak of

Just purchased 99 GLS loaded for my wife. car has 33k miles. We purchased an older model (86)about five years ago. All white with white leather interior, and white custom wheels. Her old one has just about 100k miles, yet has been very reliable vehicle, through some very difficult New England winters. Her sister just bought a Cabrio, and gave my wife the bug to want a newer one. We went to local dealer, told them exactly what we were looking for, and asked them not to call us unless they found a car that was nothing less than what we were looking for. Took about three weeks, but the call came in, my wife went down and looked at it, Negotiated from 19k to 17,500K and picked it up the next day. I was working out of state at the time, so she called me on cell phone with convertible top down on the highway. I could hear the wind and radio in the background. She told me how wonderfull the car is, and how much more she loved me for making it possible for her to have the car she always wanted. Her fathers swears by Volkswagons, and every memeber of her family of 8 has owned, or owns one now. We gave her old (86) to her father to keep at his summer home on the Cape Cod. My wifes license plate is "TOPLSS"

Strength:

Having the top down in in the nice weather

Weakness:

Just about everything else.

I was so excited when I leased the car and couldn''t wait to drive it. It has been nothing but one headache after another and almost every problem is has had, has happened more than once. I have had the dashboard go crazy - they coudln''t figure that one out for a while and then had to wait for parts to be ordered, shipped, delivered - it ended up being months. The air conditioner went and it took a year to get the part. The driver side mirror didn''t work and they had to fix it 4 times. I could go on and on and on.........

Strength:

see below plus HANDLES LIKE NO OTHER, 5 speed transmission is AWESOME!

Weakness:

expensive to maintain.

I''ve just read my previous review and noticed that the weekness field was fully loaded giving the impression of non recommended purchase. The car is great, I would definitely buy the same 1997 cabrio again, the problem is that maintenance is ridiculously expensive. Dealers charge a small fortune to perform maintenance schedule such as timing belt, brake service, etc, and parts are too expensive and labor is a joke $80/hr overal.
