constantly in the shop for problems poor customer service exhaust system rusted out in less than 2 years This was a horrible car. As soon as I got the car, not even a week later I have to take it in because a light went on. They had to keep the car for a few days to "fix the problem". I wasn't given a rental or anything. Needless to say, in owning the car for 1 1/2 years, the car was in the shop at least once a month. Finally at the end, after a year and a half my entire exhaust system had rusted out which they told me was my fault because I drove down the shore on weekends. I was told that I was "sh$t out of luck" on having VW help me with covering the cost and that it wasn't covered under warranty. After that I got rid of the car. The best decision about the whole thing. |

Poor and expensive service. I have had my car for five years and have enjoyed it. However, I must admit that the service at VW is horrible and I have gone to many different locations. They also charge way too much for service and parts, I have had a cracked headlight cover for three years (the light still manages to work) but I haven't reaplaced it because the piece of plastic is $300! |

fun to drive nice to look at. in the summer it is great on a sunny day otherwise its just a regular car
Weakness:
knobs to turn the seats down suck. parts are expensive- vinyl tops crack in the folds and are loud at high speeds. if its not sunny out and you are unable to use the convertable top you might as weel have bought a honda Nice car- problems with the battery and the trunk not staying closed- HATE THE KNOBS TO LET THE FRONT SEATS DOWN THEY SUCK- you'd think in something as technological as a car it would have motorized seat movers. parts are expensive- vinyl top cracks at where it is folded. Strength:
GREAT gas mileage, extremely dependable, great handling, perfect for summer w/ auto top & winter w/ front w.d. & small wheel base, great factory sound system, (mine came w/ 6 cd changer in trunk), nothing to complain about here, my sporty little economic car will run forever & my pocketbook will love it! Same deluxe features of a BMW w/out the price. A lot more dependable. LOVE it!
Weakness:
Drips a little through seal around drivers side window in one particular spot after heavy rains (VERY little), small trunk, but I don't need much. Enough to fit a week's vacation needs for 4 people. Parts are a little harder to come by...you just have to order them or know a good dealer who keeps them on stock, usually not much more than regular parts, however you won't have much maintenence on this vehicle. LOVE my car, small but roomy, peppy, nice on inside & outside, no wind noise (wash only by hand, never through auto car wash as told by dealer), always starts in cold midwest winters, great dealer service even after warranty, only thing I've had to do for my car is new tires, brakes, rotors...the normal for my leadfoot. Beware, your friends will always want you to drive. Perfect for me when I was in college because of the gas factor, great afterwards also...professional, fun, safe to haul children in, will keep it til I'm a soccer mom ;) Probably will keep it afterwards for my own kids...maybe take it out myself on a sunny day! No reason to let go of this gem. Going to take it soon to drive cross country, very much looking forward to it. All 4 seats will be full...everyone wants to go for a road trip in this car! Heading south for some sun! Similar Products Used: Used to have a Lincoln Mark VII LSC, great car, however bigger, faster, & used way more gas, got me speeding tickets |

The car always starts! Has a great sound system, and very low maintnance.
Weakness:
When I crashed it into a bluf (LONG STORY!), parts took forever to order. Very slow servace. Car is underpowered. Convertable top leaks and the check engin light always comes on. I was given this car as a devorce gift, from my parents. They bought it for me. I've never owned a foren car, but I thought I would give it a try. |

Strength:
Manual transmission gives it the pep and the sound system is more than enough (added a 6 disc changer). This is my first year in a cooler climate and lots of snow there is no rust yet. My top still looks great after 4 years living on the shore and a summer in the desert.
Weakness:
Lack of service at VW dealers, and wait to get an appointment (last time 6 weeks). I refuse to take it to the dealer any more, I found a great local mechanic that deals with foreign cars. I did have problems with my the plastic strips on the side but after I discovered I could reglue them myself never had a problem again. Have also replaced the front brakes, exhaust system, starter, belts, tires, and water pump. I do get condensation in my trunk during the winter, but not a big deal. Although my car has given me some problems along the way I love it (it has 91,000 miles). I've put 61,000 miles on my car in the last 2.5 years including a trip across the US. The car could use a little more pep (used to drive an '85 Mustang GT). I love the manual top, I can put it down while sitting at a stop light. i love the way it looks
Weakness:
everything else Problem after problem.I had to replace the top, it became sticky and black.$700. the car has been to the service center 9 times. check engine light is on every time it rains. Leather is pulling away on both doors. car had problems with switching into last gear, could not go faster than 50mph on the hway. it leaks so bad no one can sit in the back seat because there is about 2 inches of water. my oil looks like coffee milk,VW says that is normal... i hate my car, had it for 1 yr, been to service 9 times and over $1000.00 in repairs. tried to trade it in, was offered 4,500. just paid 13,000 1 yr ago. |

Weakness:
8 valve 4 cylinder is deadly boring suspension too soft 40,000 miles later, I am impressed with this underpowered but totally fun go-kart. Reliability has been excellent. No major surprises. The top has been great, the radio, fit and finish a joy, peeling vinyl on interior door handles notwithstanding. Gas mileage not terrible for a relatively heavy car given my way heavy foot. Speedy it's not. Handling is limited by soft springing and 14 inch tires. A VR6 and some 17 inch 40 series tires coupled with a better suspension could make this a 4 sear Boxster! Good gas mileage, handles great, feels solid, high quality cloth top, looks (inside lights), lots of fun!
Weakness:
VW service adequate, not enough service centers and takes too long to service your car, peeling door handles. Purchased the car at full price (no deals on VW's), loaded, with a manual transmission; red with black leather seats and a black cloth top - nice looking car! I've been driving the car for two years now and have really enjoyed it. It's very peppy with the manual transmission, but I wouldn't try to pass someone the way I did in my 8-cylinder. In two years, the only major service required was replacement of reverse gear. My "check engine" light came on once, but they fixed it. I would rate VW service centers as adequate. Also, service centers are few and far between if you don't live near a big city. I am disappointed that my door handles are peeling. I am impressed with the quality of the cloth top. After two years, it still looks like brand new; it seems to hold up much better than vinyl tops. The top is a good, tight fit, and I have had no problems with leaks or wind noise. I bought this car while living in the mountains. What a great car on those curvy mountain roads. It handles GREAT on the curves and fits nicely on narrow country roads. However, now that I'm in the "big city" and back to driving in lots of traffic, I feel a little intimidated in such a small car. I'm going to upgrade to a small SUV with an automatic.
