Strength:

It's just so cute! Love the interior (Black cloth) I chose not to get the leather option because of how in practical it is, just to much upkeep. My GL model came with every available option that the GLS does except I don't have the power roof, I don't have alloy's and as I already mentioned no leather.

Weakness:

Well other than the fact that it happens to be a gutless wonder...The stereo tends to fade in and out. One minute it sounds fine and the next minute it sounds muffled. I think it's runs kinda loud considering it's a new auto. Other than that nothing!

I cannot express to you how much I love my car! It is positively the best purchase I have ever made ( I have bought quite a few cars ) I know the price is a little high, I paid 19,000.00 for mine, but worth every penny to me. I strongly suggest you find a GL w/all the options. Your insurance is cheaper and the cost is lower. The fact that I own a Convertible in Portland Oregon aside...I HIGHLY RECOMMEND!

I drove a 1995 GTI VR6 and the interior is almost exactly the same. Obviously the GTI is a little faster. My friend purchased a 2000 GTI VR6 the same day as me and all I can say it WOW!!!!!! ( price difference was just to much for me )

I bought this car for my son for Christmas in December. It was a New Leftover 1999. It is Red with Black top, and has power windows, automatic, cruise, stereo cassette, ABS, front and side airbags, alarm, the GL package with manual roof, which is a snap to put up or down. I cannot beleive how quite this car is for such a small vehicle. The are many times at the stop light that I think the car has stalled. It is economical, peppy (sure only 115 HP but these are VW ponies under the hood), very sharp looking, are drips of quality as far as I am concerned. I wanted a safe vehicle for my son's first car, and yet small and nimble, easy to drive. I was considering a Mustang V6 convertible, so I rented one for 4 days to see what it was like. It was very nice, but I felt it didnt have the quality the Cabrio has.....and down here, there are tons of Mustang convertibles. I also own a new Grand Cherokee for myself, and feel that the Cabrio is a much better car and quiter....

Weakness:

the stereo speakers are not the greatest, and vibrate at times. with 4000 miles on the car, that is the only flaw I can find

Paid $18600 for the leftover with all the options, and feel I did real well. Very happy with it, and have to fight my son for my wife and I to use it on open road weekends....Oh well, I offered him my new Grand Cherokee and he laughed and said NO WAY POPS

I bought a new 1980 VW Rabbit with air for $6000.00, had it 4 years, and only put tires on this car. A great car, but the Cabrio is much more high tech

Strength:

The Volkswagon Cabrio is a competent car and a real fun convertable. We purchases the top of the line GLS loaded with every available option. The car was purchased for just over $24K which is an excellent price for a vehicle with this level of equipment. The power top works smoothly and seals exceptionally well. Road noise is minimal. The car handles nimbly and the four wheel ABS adds an extra level of security. It's nice that ABS is standard for the line. The stereo with cassette and 6 disc CD is excellent and the major controls are easy to read and work efficiently. Seating is comfortable and the fact that the Cabrio has a useable back seat make this car useable for more than weekend driving. Fit and finish is exceptionally good and reflects Volkswagon's focus on quality. The 115hp engine appears weak on paper; however, it does move the car out at a reasonable speed.

Weakness:

There are only two very minor suggestions for improvement. First, the stero can be a bit confusing to operate with all of its small buttons. Second, the 14" tires would be better replaced by 15" rubber adding even more grip and better performance.

The Cabrio GLS cost just above $24K against the MSRP of $25K. For anyone looking for an exceptionally fun car to drive with a high level of equipment and quality, the Cabrio is a strong recommendation.

We drove the Mazda Miata and basically thought that this would be the car we purchased. While the Miata is fun, it lacks a backseat and does not come with a power top. It only has 4 speakers vs the Cabrio's 8 speaker system. Seating position is better in the Cabrio and the car feels more substantial. Additionally, adding comparable equipment to the Miata as found in the GLS brings the price tag of the Miata to $31K. This is more than $6K above the MSRP of the Cabrio which is $25K.

Lots of fun - just what a convertible should be. We got the GL (no leather, no auto top) w/ AT - the transmission is continuously variable, upshifting near the red line if you stomp on it, providing decent pickup. The car is also very solid and quiet for a convertible. Steering is very tight, and with front wheel drive the handling is very good. Also, the car comes with VW's cool blue dash light for night driving. The turn signal indicator had a slight short in it after about 1,000 miles - dealer replaced the emergency flasher control and all is well now. Otherwise, no other drawbacks - its a great, fun, inexpensive convertible.

Strength:

Car handles well and has been mechanically sound. Convertible is fun to drive.

Weakness:

24,000 mile warranty to low for all the problems. High road noise - rubber not secure and causes continuous leaks around windows. Both driver and passenger seat leather pulls away at base of window. Car out of warranty by 600 miles and dealer would not consider fixing. Ridiculous estimate to fix.

I would love this car, if it had a better warranty and if the car didn't have so many nuisance problems. People stop to ask me why the leather is pulling away from the windows. When on a long trip I can't hear myself think because of the road noise and conversing with the passenger is out of the question. Better rubber seals may help improve road noise and eliminate all the water leaks. For the price of the car one shouldn't have to put out thousands of dollars to fix these problems - especially at 24,600 miles. It may be fun to drive with the top down but not worth the problems.

Strength:

Fun to drive! I get so many complements when I'm stopped at red lights! VW's have excellent resale value as well.

Weakness:

The black rubber around the rear window rubs off on the white top when the top is down. Unfortunately, this can't be scrubbed off. Also, the warrantee could be a little better - even though I never have had the occasion to use it!

I absolutely love this car!! It is my second one (I was previously driving an '87 Cabriolet). I have never had any problems with either car. Extremely reliable and so much fun to drive. It handles beautifully and is very responsive. My lease is up in a few more months and I'll be sad to get rid of it. Unlike the older model that I had, the ride is very quiet - even on the express way. They have done a good job sealing the windows with rubber when the top is up. One of my only complaints is that I don't get to drive with the top down enough since it's so hot in Arizona!

Adorable car! I have received many complements on its looks. It handles well and is unexpectedly quiet for a convertible.

Weakness:

I am afraid of being stranded. I have had trouble starting it and then the check engine light comes on. The dealership has replaced relays on two occassions. The first time it worked for a week before the problem recurred. This last time it was ok for almost a month before it happened again.

I have spent as much time in other VW loaner cars as I have in my Cabrio. I have had the car less than 2 months, and it has been back to the dealer 3 times with the same problem. I really didn't want to be on a first name basis with the Service Managers! Actually, they are baffled by the problem and look more embarrassed each time they see me. The problems is the car won't start and then the check engine light comes on. This is a more serious problem that just typical mechanical bugs in a new car.

Glass rear window is a HUGE plus! Fun with the top down or up. Drives like a champ. I tried to get the wheels to scream around turns, but only got whiplash. Superb handling, smooth shifting, tight as can be. Great "chill out" car for cruising, and driving down a country road at night listening to "Pink Moon."

Weakness:

Had some mechanical problems. Intermittent starting... I discovered that turning the key hard will start it every time... if you are soft, it won't. ABS comes on when breaking goes below 20mph, and won't turn off unless you come to a complete stop... don't know why. The service people quoted me $325 to look at what was wrong... I just unplugged the ABS fuse... who needs it? Not powerful enough to burn rubber, but you will get tickets if you try.

Great car! Nice looking, fun to drive, much roomier than it appears. High quality leather seats, good attention to detail, but radio sucks. Also, the trunk is bigger than you think.

None, really. I owned an '89 Mazda MX-6 which was quicker, but handled more loosely.

Strength:

Looks...Its great attracts alot of attention. Its not a common convertible like corvette, miata, eclipse, etc.....The lights on the inside is a plus I think thats why it gets so much night attention especially when top is down,

Weakness:

Windows do leak, and has alignment problem. Within first year had to replace tires on front. Motor on top has went out and not used much, right after owner warranty expired. Unless you dont drink in your car the cup holder can only be used for spare change the cup holer is too small.

Overall this a wonderful car, even at 2years I still get compliments. Never owned a new volkswagon before and pleased with not only the looks but also the preformance of the car. Look forward to buying another Volkswagon soon. Anyone who can drive a car and be aware that you are going to attract attention better go to the neaest dealer. The leather seats and heated seat option is a good selling point. The trunk is small so no large family should be trying to get this.
