Strength:

Where do I begin with this car. The appearence inside and out has an exotic feel. The accerleration is great, it corners like a Corvette, has a pretty good factory stereo, large trunk space for its size, and good gas mileage.

Weakness:

The only default I can find is that there is a lack of visability when backing up depending on where you have your passenger seat positioned.

I purchased my Celica GTS in December 1999 and have been in love ever since. Of course I made a big jump from my lowered full-size truck to a sports car but I have driven a variety of sports cars from my friends and family and this is the best overall.
The only area about this car that may or may not deter people is that there is little room for improvement under the hood but with this kind of power who really needs to improve it.
I have always tried to have something that no one else has and this car is it. I was the first in my area to have one and now I have attracted a lot of attention from onlookers and other 2000 Celica owners. So if your looking for power and great looks this is the one for you.

Strength:

Exterior design, Interior design, high redline, generous comodities standard, VVTL-i, 100hp per litre, great gas mileage.

Weakness:

Could use a 2.0 litre engine for a little extra oomph, but that's take away from the gas mileage, and with the way gas prices are now ...

I bought a Blue Mica GTS 6-speed in December of last year for 23,500 dollars with everything but leather, side impact airbags, moonroof, and abs. I have nothing bad to say about this car. The exterior looks seem to make the car look like its in motion standing still while the interion makes you feel like you're in a fighter jet, surrounded and reassured. I have EASILY gotten this car up to 130mph with 2,500 still left on the tach. In straight line acceleration it beats the eclipse hands down, and with a body kit by Wings West coming out this year, its sure to make a hit in the aftermarket parts division making sure this little Toyota has some staying power. Get it while they still have 'em. Nuff Said.

This is a totally unbiased opinion. I am a Mopar freak and this is the first Toyota I have ever owned but it blows the pants off anything in its price range.

Its great, purss. Love the interior. Looks great inside and out. Like the 5-speed but wish i could've gotten the GTS. Stood up to hail, imagine my luck, rather well.

Weakness:

Fuzz do like to watch it, more than anyone could want. The small back seats byte and the air system on dash is different color than rest of center console. Large gap in roof when open would be nice.

20.8K for the look of GTS (still debating on replacing plastic pedals with drilled alluminum) I love the way it handles and overall its a great car. It is a lot noisier than my rx, but thats to be expected. Great car at a great price.

Strong engine at low revs, loves to be driven hard. Excellent handling (I owned a MR2 before and I think this handles better). Comfortable, great spec. Great looks, real head turner. I have a Fire Red one.

Weakness:

Seats don't remember where they were when somebody gets in the back. Otherwise not much.

I would definately reccomend it. Very good car, great on long cruises and excellent around bends.....very good.
By the way the info for the car on the site is wrong. They come with 1.8 litre engines now, GT=140hp GTS=180hp...

Strength:

the looks ,definitely the looks it catches anyone's eyes...the only rival for the racy good looks is the Eclipse....but barely...it looks faster standing still than a Porche Boxter at 90mph...it reflects it's breeding,it's a well thought out car that defines all over again what a sports car should be like......a david amoungst a cadre of over grown muscle cars

Weakness:

too dang slow...it's a sports car..for the size of the engine it should be geared a little higher. This might slow it down a little of the line but would make up for it in top speed.I hope some of those custom car makers..you know who i'm talking about those guys who take an ordinary car and pump it full of steroids.....i hope to see it on a race way quite soon...

good mileage,good agility,good brakes,ok speed.excellent looks....

Strength:

-Exterior design to die for
-Snazzy interior design
-New 180hp VVTL-i engine
-Six Speed

Weakness:

-cheap material in the front nose
-acceptable low end power(not bad but not good)
-like all japanese sports coupes, there is little space in the back seats

Striking good looks turns heads everywhere. The smooth six speed transmition only found in exotic dream cars comes to life in the Celica. Its snazzy interior design is the epitome of Y2K (especially w/ leather interior)(I suggest getting a titanium shift knob to match the silver trim on the dash and to enhance the exotic idea of six gears.) The racing inspired seats are designed so that they literally hug your body while cornering. The new 180hp VVTL-i is incredible. Despite it's adequate low end power, the car is stronger at 4000 RPM, but the real rush is at 6000 RPM when the VVTL-i(Variable Valve Timing and Lift, with Intelligence control) kicks in. With the VVTL-i, Toyota out VTECs Honda. Toyota's main idea in making this car was to keep it as light as possible, hence the cheep light weight front nose material. Some may dwell on this, however the light weight material is what make this car a pocket rocket. Overall, this is a great car worth every penny.

Model Reviewed: Celica GT-S

Strength:

Longer wheelbase than previous generation, firm AND comfy suspension, very sharp steering response, awesome brakes, interior ergonomics, responsive power past 6000rpm, standard CD and cassette, meaty 3-spoke steering wheel, precise 6spd manual shifter, 16" alloys, good forward visibility, versatile hatchback, large moonroof glass, competitive price, looks garner attention

Weakness:

Slow off the line, limited powerband despite VVTL-i, FWD, optional "manumatic" tranny saps ALL the fun and power, gaudy interior, drilled aluminum pedals are VERY slippery when wet, road noise, gauge legibility is lacking, oversized C-pillars compromise rear visibility, rear seating suitable for contortionists only, exterior fit and finish slightly below usual Toyota standards, bold design may not age well (remember the 96 Ford Taurus?), moonroof only opens as wide as a mail slot, looks garner attention from the fuzz

I'm happy to see that the Celica is getting back to it's sportier roots. The new bodywork is certainly striking, and the car is a blast to drive. Both the GT and GT-S are more fun the competing Integra models, and as a scrappy hatchback, the Celica is great. The wheelbase is longer, and when combined with the firm suspension, it offers a great combination of responsive, flat cornering while reducing choppiness in the ride. Subjectively, I think the sport bucket seats need more lumbar support. I also question the trendy styling elements like the silly, hard-to-read fonts on the gauge cluster, and the busy auxilliary gauges. The center stack is just about perfect though, if only they'd move the parking brake onto the passenger's side. I also thought the moonroof visor was very chintzy, like a flimsy piece of cardboard covered in felt granules.

Overall, this seems to be more of an Integra killer than a direct competitor with the Prelude. If you don't need a hatch, the Prelude is more luxurious (even w/o leather) and more fun to drive, but if you're like me and need some degree of practicality in a sports coupe, I think the historically reliable Celica is the best choice in its class, and it too is fun to drive again! Now if only the rumors of a naturally aspirated 230hp AWD version came true...

Weakness:

-Looks might not appeal to everyone
-Low to mid power is . . . not good and not bad

TEST DRIVE ONLY (Celica GS-T)

The whole powerband is superior to Integras and Civics. Low end isn't all that great but is better than those high revving Civics. Performance wise this car beats the hell outta Civics and Integras. The 6 gears are sweet! VVTL-i is extremely noticeable! VTEC is nothing compared to it.

The looks aren't bad. I like it. Its just different from what people normally see.

Not 5 stars in performance because of it lacks low end power. 5 has to be perfrect to me.

low price, great handling, great brakes, light weight, spirited acceleration, good power high in the RPM band

Weakness:

First off let's get something straight: this review isn't of the woosey 135hp pre Y2K Celica. This review is for the Y2K version with the 180 ponies and 2500lb curb weight. The car is so different from its predicessor that it shouldn't even have the same name. Of the similar cars which I've driven in this price range (see list above), the Celica is by far the superior performer overall. If you are considering purchasing a low to mid $20k sporty car give the new Celica a test drive.
