Toyota Camry
Strength:
Large, comfortable interior.Acceleration, braking and handling, and fuel economy are reasonable for this class of car.
Weakness:
The car is built like junk. Rattles, fender popped loose, side-view mirrors don't work smoothly, steering column made noise because of inadequate lubrication of a dust seal, smog control valve went bad, etc. Warped brake rotors are covered by a technical service bulletin, for those of you who have a 2002 Camry with this problem. Poor results on front occupant side-impact crash testing.Quality is no better than a Ford or GM rental car.For the money you can get better. Large, comfortable interior.Reasonable performance. However, build quality and components are poor.Motor Trend magazine had one for a year (see October 2003 issue). Among other things, their car had a head gasket blow and a transmission leak. Toyota is riding on its reputation. Very disappointing product, and my last Toyota purchase (my family's first Toyota was a 1969 Toyota). Similar Products Used: Ford Taurus, Acura TL, Honda CR-V |

Body of car had strong reinforcement in crash. Design of Interior very nice Engine was great.
Weakness:
Airbags don't work! Mohecan strips on top of car came loose second week of ownership. Headlight had a crack in it. Carpet in trunk kept coming unglued. Grommet in hinge of trunk came out causing hinge noise everytime trunk was opened... Endless number of problems! I am writing this to make other potential buyers aware of a major problem. My vehicle was in a head on crash that totaled out my vehicle, and neither the driver or passenger side airbags deployed. I was very upset and called the plant where they are made, and was told that kind of thing happened every now and then. Not very comforting to know. |

Fit and Finish. Looks great. Comfortable.
Weakness:
Brake Pedal goes down too far. Very scary when you read the number of complaints about the brakes on this vehicle. When you press down on the gas, there is a pause before the power comes in. On one occasion, pressed the gas to the floor after making a slow turn to the right and the car just stalled out for nearly three seconds before engaging a lower gear and beginning to accelerate. Had a V6 at 200HP in another manufacturers vehicle, so we CAN compare. Camry has a V6 and 210 HP. The Camry is far short in performance to a very similar vehicle primarily because it always pauses before it goes. Visibility from side mirrors leaves very large blind spots. Car is hell to drive when you want to change lanes in traffic. You simply can't see very well and blind spots are huge both left ande right. Overall, fit and finish are good and a good looking vehicle. When you press the gas an little or a lot, there is a pause, sometimes as long as 3 seconds before the car responds. Can be dangerous. Dealer says that if the "Check Engine" light is not lit, nothing is wrong with the car. Offers to let us drive the car with a technician. However, other complaints found on net indicate that Toyota thinks the brake problems and the acceleration problem is a design problem and they can do nothing. So far, Toyota local and national personal tell me they know nothing about brake and acceleration problems. What a crock! Similar Products Used: Mercury Sable 1999 200 HP V6. Much more performance than the Camry. |

Great handling. Eight months after purchasing car it starting stalling at stop signs/lights as if in neutral. Informed by dealer that I was not letting the car warm up long enough. Three months later the car started hesitating during acceleration. After replacing the EGR sensor, air flow filter, accelerator pedal, reprogramming the computer and finally replacing both air flow filters I traded the car. I learned from the dealer I traded with that the transmission gave out one week later and had to be replaced at 22,000 miles. Similar Products Used: Honda Accord |

Great car as far as the engine goes, functions well, transmission feels great
Weakness:
Had a rear strut (left) replaced because of loud knock while on good road. Have had a severe brake shudder while exiting at freeway speeds (no fix, dealer in denial) Have heard the windshield knock under rough roads. Had a huge amount of interior rattles in the drivers door/dash area (fixed) Car has had alignment check but wanders around alot on the freeway.Requires alot of driver input to track straight. My 12 yr. old Civic has better manners and all the same options, kinda Plain Jane for a supposed "upscale" model. .Not bad overall. Will see how well it stand up over time Similar Products Used: Honda Accord Honda Civic |

Fine for the money. Car is comfortable and roomy.
Weakness:
Be prepared to have to "force" the car steering-wise to go in a straight line. This is a MAJOR frustration, and I wish I'd have never bought this car. I'm afraid I have to modify my "glowing" review of the Camry that I entered awhile back. Since owning the car, I realize it has a significant and incurrable left hand veer/drift at highway speeds. Two visits to the dealer have not cured the problem, and I've since learned (throught lots of internet readings) that this is a MAJOR comlaint on 2002/2003 Camry's. My alignment was checked, tires were switched....no improvement attained. I talked with the regional Toyota manager yesterday, and he advises that they are well aware of the problem...but, states it is the "design" of the car..and can't be fixed.... There are times I don't even have to steer through a wide left highway curve...all I have to do is let go of the steering wheel! And, when trying to go straight on a highway for long distances, my fingers fatigue just from trying to keep the car pointed straight. I also see that at least four or five other complaints on this very issue have been filed online with the National Highway Traffic and Safety Administration: http://www.nhtsa.com I've also seen this problem referenced numerous times in some Toyota online forums... Otherwise, the car is fine...but, I can't believe I'm "stuck" with deficient steering for the remaining life of the car. This is my first, and LAST....Toyota.... |

Toyota Camry XLE V/6
Strength:
Smooth and quiet running V/6 at highway speeds. Good ride on smooth roads.Plenty of power. Very good gas mileage.
Weakness:
Faulty rear struts. Faulty alternator. Faulty wiring in outside rear view mirror. Warping brake rotors. Faulty fit on leather covered rear seat. Jekiness in car between 40-50 MPH. Purchased 2002 Camry in December 2001. Initially liked looks and feel of car. Early on had to replace rear strut on car due to noisy knock in rear of car.Later had to replace alternator due to problem. After this car started blowing fuse which controlled rear view mirrors and electronic display in dash. Car had ill fitting glove box lid, not fixed. Car also had faulty fitting leather in rear seating area, dealer fixed this. Around 17,000 miles car developed warped brake rotors, dealer turned rotors but another dealer had to replace with new rotors about 10,000 miles later. Car has now developed a jerkiness between 40 and 50 miles per hour. Front seats not comfortable for tall drivers, seats cause leg cramps. Similar Products Used: None |

Strength:
Reliable, Reliable, Reliable
Weakness:
Performance; Acceleration Reliable is the first word comes to my mind to summarize my Camry. I'v been driving this car long and hard. Bought new in 1997, now it has 125k miles on it. During the entire 125k, not a single breakdown. Ride quality is acceptable, Quiet, Engine has little noise, but little power too (see below). Instruments are intuitive and easy to access. Performance? well, when I purchased the camry, I was not looking for performance. So I should not expect it delivers good performance. Non-the-less, I would say the performance on the LE model is at most acceptable. I find myself push the car pretty hard just to merge into the traffic. I was outrun by a Oldsmobil Alero the other day stand-start from a bridge toll. A V-6 model may be better. Similar Products Used: 1987 Celica (not a good car) 1995 Corrola (same issues as Camry) |

Breaks. The breaks are a major concern for me. They tend to rattle & almost seem to "skip" when one breaks suddenly. This car is a good buy - it's reliable, the car is quiet and drives well. Yes, the paint quality is not the best but you can take care of the car and it will be preserved. |
