Where should I begin... you can see I left a glowing review on 8/8/2000 , and now that I no longer have the piece of $#!t I'm going to give all potential newcomers the lowdown of 25,000 miles of hell... Let's start with the tires, which were (and probably still are on new models) Firestone Firehawk GTA's. Traction with these tires is MINIMAL after a couple of months of moderate city/highway driving. The 3 near crashes in the winter (mind you, I was going 5 MPH down a VERY slight grade) were due to the POS tires. If you're foolish enough to purchase this POS import wannabe, do yourself a favor and pick up some Goodyear or Michelin/BF Goodrich tires... your life could depend on it. A flaw that has remained (the info from this point on comes straight from the mouth of David Rose - the ignorant service manager @ Saturn of Monroeville) deals with the rotors and brakes. Prior to the new body styles/engines/suspension that were introduced between 95-97, the brake pads on Saturn cars consisted of a highly metallic compound, and the rotors were well-designed to take the abuse said brake pads would incur. They're now using cheap rotors and the brake pads no longer have the "bite" since they've switched to pads that aren't as metallic. David Rose then proceeded to show us rotors off of a 00' LS-2. COMPLETELY RUSTED AND WARPED. Same thing happened on the SC2 I had. Electrical problems have been occurring for the past year, and Saturn would always deny that it was the alternator... had the alternator go in my 94 SL1. I question their supplier at this point... The EXHAUST cracked @ 18000 miles as well. I had to drive around with my car making some god awful noise for 6000 miles before I threatened legal action (and getting rid of it - props go out to #1 Cochran Hyundai for coming over to appraise the trade-in value while it was on the rack). They finally found the crack and "fixed" it. Drove it around a bit and noticed the car was driving MUCH better (quicker acceleration, QUIET)..... UNTIL I started it up the next day and it made the EXACT same noise... I would have had to wait a week to get it fixed, had it not been for the no-pressure sales approach of Kenny Ross Ford. While the SC2 was in Ohio, I had the chance to drive a stripped down Focus.... at that point, I knew that buying a Saturn was the biggest mistake I could make.... To top it all off, a lady I work with (we'll refer to her as CW) got her 2001 SL2 at a LOWER PRICE than the sticker dictated, PLUS free oil changes and state inspections for 3 yr/36,000 miles at NO ADDITIONAL COST.... Once again, the no-talent a$$-clown service manager David Rose told me how Saturn's sales are declining and they're not selling 1/2 as many cars as they did from 91-96. The quality is no longer there and the "image" will soon fade away. Before you make the long term mistake of buying a car that makes Chrysler, Chevy, and Ford's worst lemon look like a dream, do yourself a favor and check out http://www.saturnexposed.com. If I knew about these kinds of problems, I never would have bought the POS in the first place. Fortunately, I no longer have it.... I feel bad for the person that ends up buying the reject that Saturn will never be able to fix.... Decent accelration, handles well on ice, snow, beaches, and back roads. Dent resistant pannels are a godsend. gets you out of the way of 18 wheelers when the need arises. Burns like a charm for a 4 cylinder, and the emergency brake still holds up at 90km/h for whipping 180's and doughnuts. Really rips up baseball feilds and other public fields with its non-stop reverse doughnut personality. 6 cup holders make for great drinking and driving trips.
Weakness:
Fruity green color and the interior is as crammed as Micheal Jacksons bird in a little boy. Seats burn up easy from joints and other sort of smokables. The seats retain the smell of spilled beer really bad, and when you mix this smell of dope with it its like the seats turn to mold and smells like cack This car is great. Holds up to my continuous beating like noting i've ever driven. Animals clean easily off of the grill, and blood and other things clean off well. Birds get caught in the streamline of this car quite a bit, which makes for some intersting trips up backroads at 60mph. It has good gas mileage but it could be better. Insurance isn't very high. It is sporty looking. It won't rust. Runs very good after over 55k miles on it.
Weakness:
I does look sport but if you're looking for something fast don't buy this one! After about a year I started getting rattling in the dash and some in the back half of the car. It doesn't have very much "get up and go" but once you get going past about 35 or 40 mph it runs good. I think it was worth the money, but if you want something speedy, think about something else. Don't let the body fool you-it looks sporty, that's about it. If you're considering one of these cars, think long and hard about it! Similar Products Used: None |

Price (no haggle deal), lack of features, poor ventilation system, overall cheap looking This car was purchased for my wife initially...she wanted it..and I still can't belive I paid full sticker for this thing. The no hassle deal means..everyone coming through the dealers door gets shafted equally. I priced the Chevy Cavaliar and could have bought that car with more options for $2000 less....but she wanted the Saturn. She got it. Car had a transmission leak when we took delivery...the aluminum casting for the Transmission was faulty and had to be replaced at the dealer. Overall the car has provided adaquate service...but you get a very spartan auto for the money. I want to meet the Idiot who designed the trunk hinges for this thing. I can't count the number of items I've smashed or broken when I close the trunk (the hinges are exposed and will damage items in the trunk area). The engine is okay..although is underpowered (SC1). You have to floor it to get any passing speed and then the engine is unbelievably noisy. Like I said before..the car has been pretty relaible..but so was the Sundance and the Laser...and I didn't have to pay full sticker for them either. I'd advise anyone considering a Saturn...to check out other comparable cars....Quality and warranties are pretty much the same for cars in the same class as the Saturn..and I'll bet you get more car for the money. The car really doesn't have any pick up power for a 1.9l it's kinda slow at first, then after awhile it picks up alittle bit going over 80. Don't get me wrong it has decent power just not as i thought it would be for a sc2 DOHC.
Weakness:
The car needs more power, i have a stick and the car has a governer and shut me down at 110mph. The sc2 has really disapointed me. i thought the car would have been fast that's what the sc stands for'' sports coupe'' but at least the power is decent and the gas mileage is good for aroung 28 mls per gallon. The sc2 is really a nice car just not my type i will never ever by a saturn again. Don't get me wrong u others are happy and people might like um not my type though. The SC2 is a nice looking vehicle. Performs well after acceleration. Handling is great.
Weakness:
Oil consumption. It seems many 97 SC2 owners are complaining about this and YES, the dealership says it is OK and normal while the mechanic at Walmart says it is excessive usage of oil. Sometimes, vehicle is sluggish at picking up and going but other times it wants to get you a speeding ticket. I would have to say I would not own another Saturn again not because of the car but because of Saturns crappy support. They don't want to take responsiblity for their products. The only thing they want is your money. They give you free cokes and donuts while you are buying but all that changes once you get the keys. They fiddle around, incompetent in fixing even the slightest problem. Treat you like an idiot because you are trying to tell them the thing is losing oil. I feel Saturn knows this and I eventually wouldnt be suprised if there is a recall on the SC2 for oil consumption problem, or better yet a class action suit from all the SC2 owners out there who are tired of Saturns crappy support. Weakness:
noisy bits. i got my 92 sc new in 1992 back when saturn was a novelty. people would stop and ask what kind of car it was and how i liked it. i loved it. for what it had it was a good deal. easy to maintain and service. decent gas mileage if you don't drive at full throttle all day long. the plastic body is excellent! no dents, no rust. buying the car was a nice no hassle, no haggle experience. everyone pays the same sticker price and they clearly mark what it costs including options. the induction system wooshes somewhat and the retractable headlights sound like they are breaking when closing. firm handling and great steering with the variable assist. good brakes but rear discs should be included with or without abs. good power (124hp@5600rpm 122ft-lbs@4800rpm with 119ft-lbs@2400rpm) and lightweight (2400lbs) with a nice 5-speed manual transaxle. sadly my sc was totalled in 1999. :( so i got a 96 sc2. Looks good, quite reliable - 114k miles and no major problems. Surprisingly quick, despite not having as much horsepower as a modern Civic or Neon. The lightweight plastic body panels offset that a bit, as well keep the car looking new as other reviewers have mentioned. Minor mods improve the car's performance even more.
Weakness:
Drinks a lot of oil. Doesn't burn it or drip it - it just disappears. This seems to be a known problem with the mid-90s DOHC engines. New Saturns don't have this problem. To me, the biggest weakness is that a brand new 2001 SC2, under the body panels, is virtually identical to the original 1991 SC. There have been some updates over the years, but never any major changes. That's why I bought a 1995 rather than a 2001 for over twice the price. (This will change when the S series starts using GM's Delta platform in 2002.) Don't get this car if you want a useable back seat, because it isn't. Go for a 3-door '99+ for that. Sealed beam headlights are useless, but easily upgraded to Hella H4s (pre-95 SC1s, pre-97 SC2s only). I bought the car to be a daily driver that I wouldn't be bored with while autocrossing my old BMW on the weekends. The BMW died, so I ran the Saturn in an autocross, and beat my best times in the BMW by several seconds. I autocrossed the Saturn seriously over the past year, and took third place in my class for the season. I've done a couple of driving schools at the track with it, and found myself passing "faster" BMWs. And it still served as my daily driver, and got me to work every day. The car has held up very well. Nothing has ever broken as a result of the racing - just minor repairs due to regular wear and tear. This winter I got a Miata to take over racing duties, and the SC2 returns to its original intended daily driver purpose. I have no doubt that it'll continue to serve me well in this role, and still let me take the twisties pretty quick if I feel the urge. It still doesn't get a 5 star value rating because the new car is so similar to the old car. Similar Products Used: None |

Burns oil, and makes to much ratteling noise in dash and engine. Overall, I would not buy a Saturn again. The first year Saturn came out I purchased the SL1 series. It was the best, meaning I had NO problems with it, so figuring my first Saturn was great this one would be too. I was WRONG. It has been nothing but trouble. From 3 different recalls (recalls consisted of a wire in the engine, the seatbelt on drivers side and the fuel pump)to burning oil, rattling in the engine and dash, there is only 76,000 miles on it. This is the SC2 series. Similar Products Used: SL1 series, first year Saturn came out. Had that until I bought this Saturn. |

This car is a very nice car to have. The handling and quickness for a four banger is great. Theres not a lot of horsepower, but the torq in the car makes up for it. I'm getting some mods done for it, like a cat-back exaust, power stack in-take, performance muffler and a performance throttle body to give it up to 20 more horsepower. The body style is sporty unlike the other Saturn models. Very nice sporty interior.
Weakness:
When the engine is at idel it is loud and makes my interior rattle and creak. I had to have my engine rebuilt because it was burning a lot of oil and ruind my pistons, piston rings. My warranty paid for it, it cost them $2,800 to fix. Other than that its been a great car!!! Other than the engine problem the car has been, compared to other four cylinder cars its really fast and sporty. I gave the car a 5 star on value because its a real reliable car. It looks and runs great. Overall rating i gave a four because of the engine problem. Otherwise a great car Similar Products Used: none |
