Strength:

V6 with a 5 speed has nice pickup and handles great in turns.

Weakness:

In the first 6 months owning this car, I returned to the dealership 12 times. Rattles in the dash where it was not even attached, clutch cylinder had to be replaced, flaw in the windshield that nearly caused an accident, burns in the paint, wiring problems, rust under the windshield seal in the first 3 years, poor body design which caused all rocks to peel paint off side panel even though we had mud flaps. After 3 years we had to replace the Intake manifold gasket, 2 sets of rotars and faulty anti lock brake system. Even though regular oil changes were done we recently had to replace the timing chain, cam shaft, and lifters. Front bushings have also gone.

I paid 15,000 for this car and would not recommend it to anyone to buy. There is no resale value because there are hundreds of them on the lots already and it has just not lived up to my expectations in buying a brand new car. Go buy a Honda!

Strength:

Great engine, plenty of power for the money, well equipped. Excellent ergonomics. Good wheels and tires. Quite reliable, despite incessant squeaks, clunks and rattles. In three years, I have not had to make a single necessary repair, although I have had a dealer replace several things (including a front strut) because of the noises.

Weakness:

Body rigidity is virtually non-existent. The car does not feel solid on any kind of a tight turn. Turn radius is clearly from an eighteen-wheeler - I have seen cars twice its size turn in less space. Various squeaks, clunks and rattles have appeared in the first 3 months, but all of them have so far been non-consequential. In short, the rest of the car cannot keep up with the performance that the wheels/tires and engine can provide. The gear shifter is all rubbery and I sometimes miss gears (I do not remember whether I had that from the beginning or if it got that way over time). ABS acts suspiciously - on several occasions, I felt that it kicked in too easily and pumped the pedal too fast, so I might have gotten better results with standard brakes. That is just a feeling, though, and overall ABS is a worthy feature. Climate control is somewhat weak - it takes up to 10 min. for the heater to warm up and the air conditioning unit has NEVER made me chilly - even in April. However, it does a decent job of keeping windows unfrozen and de-fogged, and that is all you can expectl, right? Resale value is not as good as I would like, but you can hardly expect more from a low-end car. Want better resale value - shell out extra dough for Integra or BMW 318.

Overall, a good deal if you absolutely want brisk driving but can't afford a sports car.

If I had the extra money, I would absolutely have bought the Integra. That car felt solid like a rock, and lower engine characteristics were more than offset by handling quality.

I recommend this car to anyone wanting value, just make sure to get the 2.4L engine.

not much. has decent power.

Weakness:

one of the worst car experances you can have with a new car. Poor integrity, wind noise, extreamly poor reliability.repaird more than 15 times in 4 years includeing engine problems.

Paid $16400. I would seriously consider the problems of these GM cars. If it were not for my factory/extended warrenty i would be broke. racked up $6700 in repair bills not to mention weeks of repairs. Letters to GM and many Phone calls fell on deaf ears. its ashame but arter this experance i will never buy a GM car again.I don't recommend this car or the manufactur who backs it.

Strength:

This is a great economy car! Great on gas mileage. It can be fun to drive. Great sound system. I have owned this car for three years and have only had to have a seal replaced (it was still under warranty) and the normal tires and brakes. I have put on 57,000 miles and really got a lot for the little I spent on the car.

Weakness:

Low resale value. Need to get the larger wheel/tire size for a better ride. Not a lot of cup holders- they are also in wrong places.

If you are like me when I purchased this vehicle, you are looking for a good deal. I got one in this car. I couldn't afford much (I was in college) and this car has performed very well for the $14,000 I paid for it. Overall, I can't complain. Except that now I want to sell it and can't get a good amount.

Leased the car in septembre 1999. One month later started experiencing problems.

Rust on trunk lid, Pulsating brakes, ABS failed, Motor support broke,Door moldings changed, Windshield moldings, Windshield washer spayer,Vibrating clutch pedal, Door locks, Strut was changed, Trunk lid lock replaced, Rough idling in the morning, Gas gauge malfunction, In neutral, car will stall, Rusty rims, Motor hesitation on start-up.

Got in an accident because the car stalled in the middle of an intersection. Contacted everybody at GM to take the car back. They do not want to. Now it seems that i have to go to court in order for them to fix the car.

Strength:

This car is FAST! I was very surprised as to how fast the 2.4-liter in the GT was compared to other cars with reputations of being fast. The 2-door model, with spoiler, is probably the sportiest car you can find in the price range. My 1996 has over 78,000 miles on it already, and the only engine problem I have had whatsoever was an O2 sensor that needed replaced. Lots of safety features means low insurance rates.

Weakness:

The inside door handles have a tendancy to come loose. The trunk sometimes closes itself when a door gets shut.

This is an excellent car for someone who wants a sporty and fast car that is cheap on the budget as well as insurance.

Puts the 1995 Sunfire to shame, although I am still very impressed with the '95 as well.

Model Reviewed: /GT 5 Speed

Strength:

I bought the car for it's looks, the speed, the price, the monsoon 8 speaker 200 watt cd system.

Weakness:

I have only had the car for a short time and therefore have not had much of a chance to see what problems may happen but what I have noticed is the custom sunfire rubber floor mats if not placed right will cause problems shifting if you close the glove box hard after first putting in a disc it will skip but I have never had it skip for any other reason. The cup holders are too small. I would like it more if it had climate control.

Overall for the amount one pays it is a great car. I spent a long time out test driving cars before getting this. I thought for sure I was going to buy the 2001 Honda Civic SI-G and only on request from a friend test drove the 2001 Sunfire GT. Before showing up and test driving it I had some pre - judgement of the car which was that it was cheaply made, slow, and lacking in features. I was amazed when I showed up for the test drive in the way they have changed the look of the car (ie. dual exhaust) with 16" Goodyear Eagle RS-A performance tires with a nice rim to match. I strongly believe that if you give this car a far chance you will love it. I do have a friend that bought the 2001 Sunfire and for me I only saw it as a A to B car were if you go with the 2001 Sunfire GT fully loaded (1sb) plus sunroof it is no longer a car it is a ride. Something I did to my Sunfire GT is put on Monte Carlo strips (Ultra Silver Metallic car color black strips) and Tinting in the windows. I love the way the car looks.

Strength:

This car is a very sporty, cool, fast looking car. I love the new look they designed for the year 2000. They changed the front by putting round fog lights, and a ram air gril in the front. They also added side ground effects that are well molded. the back could use a little more to it, but they did put round reverse lights that they copied from the new grand ams. The bucket seats inside are very comfortable as well. I also like the idea of the fold down seat in the back. (good for the subwoofers) And last thing that I'm going to complement is all the cup holders, there's 5.

Weakness:

This is a very nice car, but there a some thing that i don't like about it like the engine. It could be faster by having more horsepower then 115. If you're going to get a sunfire I highly recomend not being cheap like my parents and getting the GT model with 150 horsepower. Another thing that could be better is the sterio systems, i took everything out, but some people do put up with them. (They did do one good thing by adding tweeters in the fron though). One last thing that I have to disagree with is that there's no rims on the coupes. But like I said earlier I highly recomend the GT model because it has more horsepower and 16" GT rims, (oh yeah and a dual exhaust)

I was attracted to the looks mainly on this car, not only from the outside, but the inside as well. I like the spoiler that comes standard on this car. It's not like other spoilers which i really like. I like all the ground effects that comes on the coupe and the new reverse lights. The inside has nice bucket seats and a fold down rear seat which every sterio guy wants. But the reaason my parents bought me this car was the price, you get alot for your money in this car. It come wist dual airbags and ABS.

I put the sunfire in the class with those import cars like toyota corrola, honda civic, volkswagen golf and mazda protage. It's not in the top of those models, but it's still not the top.
