Strength:

Great looks, smooth 2.4 engine, great stereo and though everybody seems to complain about the interior, i think its great looking and very comfortable (love red interior lights at night) Quiet smooth ride.

Weakness:

5spd feels odd to shift at times and engine can make a slight rattle at idle, brakes also (but rarely) make a strange pop sound when almost to a complete stop. Also, cupholder could have been put in a better place especially with the 5spd

Its a great looking car. It has a pretty powerful 4cyl and it corners nicely. I would say the best part about the car are definately its looks though. The GT looks very ''Firebird'' like and will catch anyones eye. I think the 99 and older sunfires also look much better than the newer ones, much more curved and modern looking. I have had the car for almost a year with no problems at 37000 miles.

Strength:

Decent Handling A/C worked well

Weakness:

CV joints were worn out (Driver''s side) Engine sounded sick Sporadic cold weather startup problems Lack of take-off power

I made the mistake of renting one of these a while back. These things are almost as ugly as an aztec. The engine (2.4) sounds like a dying cow on take-off and the interior is not made for persons over 6'' tall and there''s almost no trunk space. I felt like I was driving a plastic yugo.

Strength:

Car is at a good price point. Very sporty no major problems so far

Weakness:

Kinda hard to find performance parts for.

The Sunfire that I purchaced has been an awesome car thus far. I was instantly attracted to the sportiness of the vehicle. Test Drove the 2.2 liter and was a bit disapointed. BUT when I was introduced to the 2.4 automatic things changed. The car I admit did have one problem tho, I had to replace the fuel celiniod within the first month. But that was just a falty part off the line. I drive the car approx. 100km a day and as long as I do the oil changes I dont get any resistance. I drive the car hard and she loves it. Squeeling the tires at lights, taking corners etc. Juat wish that I had waited for the 2002 2 door manual transmission.

Reliability

Weakness:

None so far

What a great, reliable car. Bought it in 1998 as a used car with 60,000km (about 36,000 miles) and now it''s up to 160,000 km or almost 100,000 miles....and never a HINT of a problem! OK, I did have a water pump to replace a year ago for about $600 Cdn ($400US), But that''s it. Just oil changes and the usual maintenence like brake pads etc. The engine is still pretty peppy and the body is in great shape. I think the GT models are a little mroe reliable than the regular models because the engine is bigger I have noticed that even on the highway the RPM''s don''t usually get up to 3,000---so the engine isn''t stressed all the time you''re driving the car.

Stereo, looks. ok gas milage

Weakness:

Interior, transmission, air con, ABS, body, really sluggish when AC is on.

For all those who have purchased a sunfire with the VIN # that starts with a 3(Mexican Made). When I first bought the car, someone had hit the bumper on the lot, that took 2 monthes for them to change. Also, the snap on the leather skirt around the shifter was broken. Air leak in the driver window took two trips to the dealer to fix (broken plastic mouldings inside the door (within the 1st month). The dash is misaligned, the plastic cover over the guages misaligned. ABS activates when I hit a pothole, air con rattling (they moved the hoses around) and the transmission of my 5sp piece of crap is screwed. Apparently a design defect of the engineers, which are still building the trannys that way causing the gear to have slip resulting in backlash(eventually the gear teeth to break). A bulletin published details for the technicians to put thicker tranny fluid in the tranny. Isn''t that like putting sawdust into a knocking engine guys! I have had the new fluid in and the rattling noise that occurs when i let the clutch out in 1st and 2nd gear is still there. This car is a lmon and I have had nothing but poor service...GM customer service tells me to take it up with the dealer...what a joke. Don''t buy a sunfire.

Head Gasket design, alternator, not enough time in the day...

I had heard American cars had gotten better. After buying several foreign cars I made the mistake (Big) of buying a Pontiac Sunfire. The bi-metal engine is BADLY designed and requires a new head gasket which will also be subject to failure in a few years. My Nissans and Hondas each went over 150,000 miles with no problems. The Sunfire spends most of it''s time in the shop ...with only 46,000 miles!!! Buyers beware-- this car is a lemon and should have a head gasket recall out on it soon!

Strength:

Good on gas, fun, good size car for me, stick shift is good, love keyless entry, large glove box, stering wheel comfortable to hold, seats comfortable on long trips, sun roof, and the looks I get from others!!!

Weakness:

Interior doesn''t seem to be the best quality, cup holder should be in front of the stick shift not behind it, better quality fabric, larger arm rest storage, trunk opening needs to be wider, engine on the coupe could be a little faster!!!!!

I love my Sunfire. It is the perfect car for those who were not blessed with a tall frame. I did have to bring it in once already though. The air conditioner tube was pinched and I wasn''t getting the cold air coming through. Silly me went almost the whole summer thinking that it was supposed to be that way!! Don''t laugh. Anyways, no big deal, its all better and my hair flies all over with the power of the air. Love it. I wish I had purchased the GT for more power. I tend to go a little faster than I should at times but its the car, I can''t help it. I know that when I do start my family I will need to trade it in. I was watching my friends child and let me tell you something, two doors and baby seats do not go together. I will enjoy it while I can. When baby does come some day, I will be purchasing a Pontiac Grand AM.

Strength:

The looks are great. The interior is very very very very strong!!! The car has a very sleek dash. Stereo is very impressive. The optional keyless entry and steering wheel stereo controls are great. Love them both! The 2.4L engine is so great and trouble free. I''m so glad I bought this car.

Weakness:

The only weakness that I have w/ this car is the driver side power window. I heard this car has a problem w/ the driver side power window going out. Well, I found out that''s true. My window is starting to slow down, and not work at all from time to time. Oh well no big deal I''ll just get it fixed.

This car is over all a great car. It''s sporty, fun, easy on the eyes, and economical. Rides smooth and drives great!
