Well i purchased my sunfire on the 21st and on the 21st i had to have it towed to the place that i bought it. I loved the car when i had it the first 5 hours. It was mainly the dealers fault so i can''t rag on the car. I love it. I hope that i have a better experience with it though. I would recommend this car, because i have had family members own this car and they had ran it for over 180k. THe car goes excellent in the snow i have heard. All you can do is try. If you dont like it then take it back.

Strength:

Quiet, drives well, easily modified (upgrades), inexpensive.
Galvanized steel body is great for rust proofing but bad for paint chipping.

Weakness:

Interior platics are really bad. Almost everything broke and had to be glued back.
Its an american car.
Needed repiars often, thank God for warranties.
Weak suspension.
Parts are more expensive than I would have thought.

Not a bad car, if you have a warranty with it. Drives well.
Engine puts out, handles weel in curves. I put wider tires on it, wich helped the weak suspension. I sold mine before I hit 130,000 kms, because it was starting to have problems (noises from all over, suspension needed changing, etc...)

Strength:

My parents paid for it.
The stereo actually sounds pretty good inside the car on some songs (after it develops a crackle).
Pretty comfy going over bumps.
Big trunk.

Weakness:

Needs more cup holders (ones that tacobell cups won't topple out of too)
Needs more horsepower (my friend's celica gets more than double the horsepower on .4 liters less)
Needs more comfortable front seats (who cares about the back seats)
Needs less space in the back (people ask for rides too much)
Needs to have a lot less stuff break (head gasket, altinator, fly wheel, starter, etc)
Needs stiffer stearing (not very fun to drive, when I want to turn, I want the car to turn)
Needs a volume control that goes down when you turn it left (this is how you get the crackle )
Needs a lower rear seat (kinda hard to see out the back)
Needs a sturdier stearing wheel (the very top of it flexs, very annoying when driving with one hand)
Needs a less girly look (the front looks like a :) maybe add some angry eyebrows?)
Needs to be less occultly focused (rear lights and reflectors if connected would make a pentagram)
Needs more cleanable material (very easy to stain )
Needs to be harder to take off the auto shift knob (its very annoying when "friends" take off the shift knob while you are driving)
Needs more conventional design for head unit (its like 2 1/8s the size of regular head units)
Needs the back of the junk hole below the heat/ac controls to be sealed (stuff falls out and lands in the floor)
Needs stronger under seat materials (don't know how the plastic and metal down there broke)
Needs a stronger engine (yeah it needed to be mentioned again)
Needs a stronger rear seat loop (won't stand up to two inmature little kiddies)
Needs a lower, sturdier frame (would really help cornering)
Needs longer lasting elastic thingies on visors (not sure what the saggy things are for anyway)
Needs to go through less brakes (that might be my fault)
Needs bigger altinator (the clock always dimmed with each bass hit)
Needs better looking interior (getting it in grey may have help there though)
Needs cheaper tail lights ($150 for a tail light!)
Needs better exhaust (one step above the thumbsized tail pipes you see on some cars)
Needs more powerful engine (one last time)

Other than it being slow, unresponsive, unreliable, uncomfortable, ugly, noisy, and girly looking its a pretty OK car, sorta. My parents bought this car new back 96 and I've just sorta borrowed it when I've wanted. I don't like it, but hey its transportation. My friend's little sister just bought a new one last month, my friend and my only comment was laughter.

Looks great but that's about it.

Weakness:

LEMON ALERT!!!!!! I've spent over $3,500 on repairs. You name it alternator, head gasket, water pump, brakes. Now the A/C is out!!!!!!

Looks good but CRAP!!!!! All of the good ratings seem to be 1999 or better. Just wait. The repairs will start piling up! The cup holder is the most obvious problem however that won't cost you an arm and a leg like all the repairs. Next time, I'm be sure to buy a foreign car.

Model Reviewed: Pontiac Sunfire GT Coupe

Strength:

Quality of the 8-speaker MONSOON stereo system w/200-watt amp., transmission, engine, all power accessories, interior seat comfort (especially driver-side) front and rear passenger leg room, cargo convenience net for trunk, acceleration, braking, handling and steering. The cruise control is especially useful for those long highway, or back country roads too !

Weakness:

The narrow trunk opening (I had that on my 1998 as well, fortunately the seat back folds down) Big rear-view mirror constantly slips out of place because of the dual reading lamps. Other than those two inconveniences, the car is just great !

I had recently given up a 1998 Pontiac Sunfire SE Coupe since the lease was up and had, had no previous problems with it. I then decided to purchase a brand new one. I have owned this one for a little more than a month now and have not noticed any major defects. I love the styling and mechanics of the vehicle. It has pretty good pickup, excellent brakes, and a very impressive transmission. Although I have not driven this one during the winter yet, I suspect it will handle about the same as my 1998. My previous Sunfire was the pretty basic model, but it did have a CD player, air conditioning, intermittent wipers and the 4-speed Automatic transmission with Traction Control. I purchased my new one fully loaded ! Power sunroof, keyless entry, power windows/locks/mirrors, leather-wrapped steering wheel, 4-speed Automatic trans. 2.4 Litre V4 twin cam enigne, 150 hp, the 8-speaker MONSOON stereo system with CD player, Cassette player, and a 200-watt amplifier, cruise and tilt. One feature that I piticularily enjoy about the stereo, is the speed-compensated-volume-control (SCV) which automatically increases the stereo volume when you are driving at highway speeds and there is wind noise. The 2001 Pontiac Sunfire is an excellent vehicle !

I am and always will be a General Motors person, I would never buy a Ford, Dodge, or Import vehicle, it's GM all the way ! GM has done an outstanding job with the Sunfire and anyone that doesn't think so is crazy !
Also, if you have $26,000.00 Canadian to spend on a Sunfire GT, why not consider the Pontiac Grand AM GT ?

Strength:

Gas mileage, smooth ride, and sporty look. Large trunk and glove box.

Weakness:

Rear view mirror vibrates a bit with stereo playing.

This vehicle is sporty looking(black),rides well, and is comfortable. Originally, I test drove a 2-door with a sun roof, but there was no head room,as my head was rubbing up against the frame of the sun roof, and I'm only 5'10". Saw the 4-door in the lot, took it for a test run,and fell in love with it. No sun roof, but no big deal. It has power windows, and a basic stereo system, with a cd player. Best of all is the gas mileage.....23 city,32 highway. I highly recommend this vehicle-nice price also.

I have owned the car for three years. I get my oil changed and I dont even make it to my scheduled oil change and the oil light comes ON! Where is it going! My coolant light is always on! I have a recall on the head gasket. I have brought it to the dealer 4 times and they say there is nothing wrong! So then where is the oil and coolant going? Overall I dont think that I would buy a Sunfire ever again!

SUCKS!

Strength:

Quickness, tight sport suspention, nice lines, no DOHC whine, free breathing engine, "flat" strong tourqe curve. Cold AC, heats up quick, nice rims on the GT's (98's & before)

Weakness:

radio distort's easy, lacks base responce. no seat hight adjust, no power seats, bad stock tire choice (GY RS-A) needs MORE power (g) needs a wind gard on the sunroof.

All thoes who have had " extencive" engine trouble, probably beat on their car's. (ahm-- look at the guy from cally who put in 3 clutches & 3 sets of tires = burn's the rubber off them.)

I have had this car 2 years, (used with 35K when i bought it & 41K now) Have had Zero problems with it. I like how it "wraps around me" when i am in the drivers seat, Makes me feel as if i am in a go cart! I owned the original quad 4, & evin with all the problems it had (buzzy, internal problems, rough at high RPM = ballance shafts = robbed 25 HP) this is a good engine. paint finish is of good (NOT great) quality. (HAND WAX PLEASE) interior is of decent quality for an afordable SPORTS car. (insurance)

This is a good car for those who DO NOT beat on thier cars (ie) take care of. Anywone in the market for a car under 20k (new) needent look elswhare.

P.S and for god's sake BUY IT WITH A STICK, like this engine/sports car becons.
