As long as you get the original equipment replaced by anyone other than a GM dealership you will be fine. Bought it brand new in 1996. The head gasket blew twice!. Finally I said enough and had a new engine put in (not from any GM Dealership but a private shop). The car is great now. No I would never buy another Sunfire (or GM car for that matter..and I work for them!) They even had the nerve to send me a letter which said that drivers may experience a head gasket problem between 60-100k miles. Of course i had 102k when the engine was replaced (and gm would not honor their recall notice). |

This car has handled fairly well for me. It handles well driving long distances (I attend college 500 miles from home) and I have gotten very good gas mileage on it (avg. 27 mpg). It is a manual transmission, and I have had a little bit of trouble shifting it into reverse and sometimes third gear. It also recently developed a leak in the windshield washer tank. Otherwise, it has been a very good car and still is at 55000 miles. I recommend this car if you are looking for something a bit sporty but very reliable. |

Looks coo'', handles nice.
Weakness:
When it breaks, and it will, a lot, it breaks big enough to strand you without a car for awhile. OUCH! My wallet hurts! I bought this (used) car on Valentine''s day 2000 (yes, I even dragged my girlfriend along to the dealership). It looked great, seemed to have a lot of power on the test drive, and handled great. It had 52,433 miles on it. Seemed to be a great car. But then i bought it... About 1 month after I bought this car it developed the habit of shuderring violently and thumping when I applied brakes on wet pavement. That turned out to be uneven wear on the rear brakes. It took 2 trips to the dealership to figure that out. Since then it has needed a new alternator (and consequently a new battery), new brakes, rack and pinion steering gear (I couldn''t turn left! That went just moments after I got off of a major freeway), one of the power coils was corroded to the point that the car would stall out quickly if you tried to go anywhere without warming it up for about 5 minutes, and the most recent problem: it needed a new ignition housing. The ignition housing problem caused the car to die a horrible shudderin death immediately if I took my foot off the gas or tried to go anywhere. In addition to those problems I just listed that were diagnosed and treated, I must report that the car seems to have lost power since I''ve had it, and seems to take an exceptionally long time to apply power when more gas is applied, as when I want to pass somebody or get up to freeway speed quickly. Also, the clock/radio display stopped working mere months after I bought the car. Just recently it has started working intermittantly. And lastly, the driver''s side seat was comfortable at first, but the springs have worn out or something because now there seems to be a hard bar right across my lower back, which hurts on long drives. Luckily, I purchased a 3 year/36,00mi extended service package when I bought the car. It increased my payments about $26, but it''s been well worth it. The steering gear problem alone would have been 800 dollars without the warranty. Oh, by the way, the mechanic told me that steering gears usually don''t go out till the car''s got about 150,000 miles on it. Mine had about 60,000 at the time. If it weren''t for the warranty, I would have paid in over 2 grand by now in repairs. I DO NOT RECOMMEND THIS CAR TO ANYONE. EVER. AT ALL. SERIOUSLY, DON''T DO IT. |

easy to handle, nice interior, relatively good on gas...
Weakness:
I have replaced the exhaust system, head gasket is leaking/cracked needs replacing, have had the brakes replaced, before I bought it the clutch and electrical system had to be fixed... unfortunately, the list goes on. Although I have enjoyed driving my Sunfire for the last two - almost three years. I have found since I exceeded the 95000km mark that I have made many trips to the Mechanic. I would not buy a Sunfire again. Similar Products Used: I must admit that I had more luck with an 1986 Hyndai Pony! Lasted longer and although less stable on the road was better on gas with fewer repairs. |

Great sound system- Handles well, good on gas, nice comfortable seats and interior.
Weakness:
Terrible suspension, brakes and dash. Was a good little car for first year. After 15,000 kilometres, the struts needed to be replaced, the dash rattled like crazy, got it replaced, the rotars needed replacement. WOW! Bombarded with problems for a new car!! I was tired and upset. Contacted the dealership and GM headquarters in Oshawa, ONTARIO requesting a replacement assuming I had gotten a lemon. They both refused. So I just sold it privately for $15,500.00. Didn''t make a dime.....just enough to pay of GMAC what I owed. I''m still upset. |

The car looks nice and up until now ran beautifully and got fairly decent mileage. The car rides very nicely.
Weakness:
All the problems that have happened since turning over the 50,000 mile mark. Hopefully this is it for trouble. Up until now I thought it was a good car. Right on 50,000 miles, the water pump had a leak and the head gasket was leaking. Five weeks later, the car is misfiring. There is a leak in the transmission and oil is leaking. The wires are corroded and the plugs need replacing. There are miscellanious other things that need replacing. I guess they call this a tuneup. I don''t think a car should need a tuneup at 50,000 miles. Similar Products Used: Chevy Corsica. Just as bad after 50,000 miles. |

-Car looks nice Black GT with deep dark tints -i slid on the ice and hit the back of a GMC Jimmy. Amazingly enough, my front is find, only the licience plate got bent. I was shocked, i thought for sure my front end was a right off, especially after i just got my car back from having my tires & rims stolen.
Weakness:
-GAS the GT and Z24 cousin are pigs on Gas I use premium GAS and in the winter i got 200KM per tank from Esso. If i use shell i get about 300-350 city driving. I dont get much more on the highway Car is nice but not the greatest. It is 2yrs old now. Car makes some noises when driving in the rain/slush. Dealership can not figure out whats wrong. -motor for power window died -had to have steering column replaced -passenger door makes some "thud" sounds when we go over bumps. I know warrenty will cover all this but its just a pain, because it seems like my car is always there in the shop. I have had some other problems aswell, someone clip my driver side mirror which costed me $250 to replace and also had my tires and rims stolen on Xmas eve 2001, and that costed me $380 dollars and did not have car for 3 weeks. My next car will be a cheapo. |

Strength:
good handling cool interior red lights nice curves on the 2 door coupe
Weakness:
stick shift is the only way to get power out of engine 4 doors are ugly i love my sunfire. i have a 2 door coupe with the 2.2l 5speed manual tran. the only problems i have had are at 50k i had to replace the cat converter. i have 90k on it now and it seems to have developed an engine knock but probably due to a severe beating it has recieved over the years. surprisingly at high revs(3500-4000rpms) the 2.2l has a good deal of power. it helps to have a manual trans though. put a good set of tires on it like 205/55s and ya get great handling. |
