Strength:

Sticks to the road very well, Has very good acceleration. Unbelievalbe when supercharger kicks in. could hit 90mph before leaving onramp. Has a good sound sytem. The brakes are good too. The HUD is a plus, because looking down to check speed is very dangerous in traffic situations. A well designed car, and is very attractive.

Weakness:

Cup holders are in a bad spot and could be deeper. Get less gas mileage than I expected. Would like the shift indicator to display also at the console.

This is a very good car. Those of you who have purchased these in the past, did you drive off road or something to test build quality? Had zero problems with brakes or build quality. Pontiac builds strong solid cars. All the people I know who own one (about 5 people) love the car, and get great service from the dealer. If you are into acceleration, this is a very quick car. 240hp in 3.8 liters of supercharge power. 0-60 in under 7 secs. Very easy to steer and handle on tight curves. I recommend this car to whoever wants speed and semi-luxery at an affordable price. After GM discount of course.

Strength:

Good Acceleration , Strong Supercharged Engine, decent handling.

Weakness:

BAD BAD BAD build quality , power window buttions falling into the doors , squeaks rattles , too much maintenance , JUNKY tires (toast in 25,000 miles) , soft break pads, (first set at 10000 miles) Cruddy dealer service. Overall a poorly built car. I expected more from pontiac.

I dont think that the GTP offers good vaule. I am in the process of trading the car in on a 2000 Honda Accord V6, much much much better car. This car is fun to drive with a lot of power but has too many issues with quality all around. When the new car luster fades and you want it to be a good car , it just isnt. I would say get a Japanese car , much better build quality all around and generally a better car. Good try USA but I cannot trust your cars any longer.

Strength:

Very striking design
Excellent value for the money
Good performance

Weakness:

Terrible build quality
Weak electrical system
Poor dealer service and support

Purchased a new Pontiac Grand Prix SE in May of 1998 ($19,995). All was well until about the 1,700 mile mark. At that point, the dash and doors began rattling. The dealer would not commit to fixing the problems as they couldn't guarantee not causing more problems in the process. Power windows failed erratically. Car would not start after engine had warmed up. Dealer refused to look at it unless the Service Engine Soon light came on or the car flat died (it never did either; it just continued to have starting issues.) In the meantime, the center console began creaking. Brakes were squealing by 7,000 miles. Traction control system failed periodically and would lock itself in the off position. The car would need to be turned off and restarted to remedy the problem (again, the dealer just said "Hmmm...that's odd." and brushed us away.)

Seats were comfortable for moderate trips, but became tiresome on long jaunts. Ergonomics were sound. No weird placement of controls. Ride was quiet, overall engine performance was good. Car handled very well.

I would not recommend the car. There are better choices. Even Pontiac's own Grand Am GT would be a better choice. Olds Intrigue and Buick Regal are similar cars, shop them as well.

I ended up trading my GP after 7 months and 9,500 miles as I could not tolerate the car's electrical problems and numerous interior rattles. If the dealer had demonstrated a willingness to work with me I probably would have made an effort to work the problems out, but they showed no interest (which also doesn't promote a good feeling about a car.)

Strength:

My 99 GTP is the most comfortable car I have ever driven. It has a wonderful kick. It is so much fun when the boost indicator lights up. I always have my radar detector on as this car can go 90 and feel like it is going 30. It is wonderfully comfortable for trips, and there is lots of room. I love the HUD and don't know how I ever drove without it. I have major problems with my back, hips and knees, and the power lumbar support makes driving comfortable. I get about 21.3 MPH during normal driving-about 24MPH on the open road.

Weakness:

I wish the front seat cup holders were a little deeper. They work ok, but deeper would be better.

My 99 Black Grand Prix four door sedan with its jet black leather interior, is the most wonderful car I have ever driven. I got every option available except the Bose system, and sun roof. Its sticker price was $25,550. My brother bought a 99 Chrysler 300M. We were both into nostalgia this year. This car reminds me of the GTO of the 60's. He paid about $5,000 more than I did, and he really didn't get that much more than me. His is a little larger, and faster, but not much. Now considering the fact that I am a 50 year old school teacher, really makes the speed factor rather unimportant. I guess this car was designed for younger people than me, but the next time you see a black GTP bookin on down the road it just might be a little old schoolmarm on her way to school. Oh, by the way, if you want some fun driving check the GTP out. I just love it!

I LOVE this car! It is elegant, classy, simple, a great looker and its faster than almost all other cars available in the mid 20's price range, I have the GTP. The car handles better than the Mustang or Impala that I test drove. The car has only 3000 miles on it so far. I think this ould be a great car for someone like me... starting a family, but NOT starting to settle down. The Non-Bose system is FAR from a ground pounder, but it does very well for a stock system.

Strength:

Great size, Pontiac good looks, fog lamps, stereo sounds good even in basic model.

Weakness:

I drove the SE with the 3.1 V6. It is probably the worst engine I've ever used with this car. There was no power for merging in traffic at speeds beyond 100 km/h (60mph). This is very unsafe. Stereo controls on steering and dash felt very fisher-price type. Get the 3.8L if you need to buy this car. Also, below average fit and finish. GM also makes the worst cruise control system in the world. It's better on their upscale products like Cadillac. Cup holders interfere with shifter when trying to manually shift the auto.

I would only recommend this car if you get it with the 3.8L engine. To me, the cheap feeling buttons really bugged me. But for you it may just be fine. Also, the humps on the hood made it really difficult to judge the edges of the car (I'm really short). Get the GTP version if you have to. It looks good and you definitely get your money's worth.

Try out the Intrepid, Intrigue, and Taurus first.

Dodge Intrepid, Oldsmobile intrigue. For the same price of the base Grand Prix SE, you can get a loaded Intrepid ES with 225hp engine plus a whole group of lovely features. Intrigue has the best engine (Northstar V6) and really gets the vehicle going. Plus you won't get the fisher-price buttons you see in Pontiac. The FORD Taurus with Duratec engine is also pretty impressive, especially with leather and you can get that for $500 more than the base Grand Prix. But it's plain looking.

Strength:

Best compromise on the market between price, performance, comfort, and style. Reliability might ruin the picture but it's too early to judge for me, I've had it only for two months.

Weakness:

The "premium" BOSE sound system sucks ####. *IF* you love music and want your car to have a real premium system, DO NOT get the "premium BOSE sound system" option. First of all, the system is complitely proprietary. You cannot replace or add any component because, according to BOSE, it'll ruin the "already perfect sound that the system creates" SHEESH. Well, that perfect sound is all mid range and they give you only 2 band EQ and when you try to boost bass or highs, it brings up even more mids. I added an AlumoPro sub with a PPI amp anyway but will probably replace the whole system altogether. The bottom line is if you're looking for a nice stereo system cause you just gotta have nice tunes in the car, dont buy that "premium" word in the add even if you liked it when you test drove the car.
I might stress only a few other "weekneses". The leather inside does look cheap but i'd rather have rigid leather than that good looking soft one for durability reasons.

Also, believe it or not, I expected cornering to be sturdier. I have NO clue why Pontiac advertises cornering capabilities (with wider track)of the car when the road holding index for the car is only .79, which is BELOW AVERAGE for a performance car. The dealers can't explain that either. The stock "performance" Good Year tires squeal when you corner at a speed and angle at which any performance car can fly through. The car has also plenty of tourque steer when you hit the pedal and I don't like the acceleration response in Overdrive at higher RPM's. I drive in 3rd with "performance shift" ON in a light rush hour, handles a lot better. All in all, even though I might wanna see some characteristics of the car to be better, I don't consider what I just said to be really weaknesses because when you look at the cost of the car, you actually realize how much you're getting.

All in all, I've had my baby for 2 weeks now and I love it! It's not the most powerful, but it has plenty of power, not the most stylish, but it is very good looking (I got black coupe and tinted windows, high polished wheels as well), it's not the roomiest but it has plenty of space and comfort. It has it all even though it's not the best in any single category, and that's what I wanted for the money I could afford. You know, they call the Grand Prix GTP a poor man's M3. I have to agree with that. I tried an M3 and it kicked my ### but you WILL be happy with the GTP if you can't do really high performance car, I am!

Just before I bought the Grand Prix, I test drove Ford Mustang (Cobra) and Mitsubishi Eclipse 2k V6, and Grand Prix GTP all in the same day. Mustang was out of question right away. The car, GT or Cobra, summarizes what many believe to be THE AMERICAN car: LOTS of raw, untamed power without any style, elagance or agility. The sound system was although consistent with the car's image: overpowering bass with no definition of sound or clarity.
The Eclipse was nice, not as much power as the Grand Prix though. If you dont care for that extra kick when you accelerate or don't need as much room as the Grand Prix, Eclipse might be what you want.

I bought my 97 GTP used and paid 17,900 for it. So far this car has been great for me and I would recommend it to anyone who likes to have fun driving. I would also recommend it if you goal is to people's heads turning as you drive by.

Where do I start? I paid only $1250 for the car 3 years ago (it had over 160k miles on it). The car blow a coil on my headers on my way back from Toronto, Canada to New Jersey, and through some miracle, I was able to get it home otherwise I'd been stuck in upstate NY; had to get rebuilt headers, and other engine damage came to $1700. The fun didn't stop there, the Pontiac Dealer swore they checked the car out, (lesson to self, don't listen to car dealers), and it turns out the person who owned the car before (ironically a GM employee), never replaced the brakes, which melted the calipers, freezing up the brakes, and causing another $1200 in damage. I blame myself for taking the car to Firestone aka "we're clueless with car repairs", for intermittent problems here and there, but what I really learned is, it's cheaper just to buy a new car. In anycase, the car leakes transmission fluid, and at this point it's in NJ. I'm in CA, just bought a Toyota Tercel, a funky car, small but fun to drive and solid.
