Strength:

Looks, value, power, sunroof!. This a smooth, quiet, and responsive sport touring car. Lots of interior space. The 3800 Series II engine is among GM's best. Lots of fun to drive!

Weakness:

WORTHLESS headlights;
No manual transmission option;
Overall fit and finish is less than perfect, and materials are only average quality

I've enjoyed this car so far, and the only problem I've had is a rattling brake pad which was easily fixed. My only other "complaint" is that the stylists seemed to have had more say in the design than the engineers. I previously owned a 1988 Grand Am, which seemed to have a more functional and efficient design philosophy, while this Grand Prix tends more toward image and appearance before function. One example of this is the low seating position and rounded body panels of the Grand Prix, which gives a sporty feel, but hinders all-around visibility to some extent.

In it's favor, however, are extra large rear-view mirrors on each side for a good view of the road.

The Grand Prix is meant to be a sport touring car, not a sports car. It has the feel of a fairly heavy vehicle with a long wheelbase. But it also has good handling and firm steering response, while maintaining a comfortable ride. For the enthusiast, there is a ton of information in the message forums at www.clubgp.com, ranging from performance and handling modifications to repair and maintenance info.

Fuel economy has been surprising for a 3400 lb car. I've averaged just under 21 mpg in mostly city driving. On our first 400-mile round trip we achieved 27+ mpg at over 70 mph.

Although GM's quality seems to have waned in recent years, this car is a great value. This body style has been around since 1997, and many of the original bugs have been eliminated. There is a wide range of options available, and a good supply of aftermarket accessories. Other than the less than ideal quality of construction, the Grand Prix provides a good level of performance and comfort for the money.

The VW's, Nissans, and Hondas I looked at seemed to have much better build quality, and better engineering. But to me, all the foreign cars look alike.

Strength:

Performance. And after a few upgrades this car will really fly. Plenty of leg room in front and back. Stylish exterior. Great gas mileage (as long as you don't go speeding around everywhere). Large trunk space.

Weakness:

Nice but not luxurious interior. Stiff ride but mainly due to the GTP's sports suspension. The other Grand Prix models ride better. Occasional odd sounds from underneath hood.

I have owned a Pontiac for almost 10 years now and they seem to get better each year. I have been thinking about getting a convertible lately but I just can't get rid of this car. Performance is excellent and and this car handles well and feels solid at all speeds (even over 125 mph). If you want a sports sedan that gets good gas milage, easy on the wallet, sits 5 comfortably, and can outrun the Maximas, Intrepids, 300Ms, and any other car in its class this is the one for you.

I DONT THINK THERE IS ANY GOOD QUALITIES. IT HANDALES GREAT AND HAS GREAT ACCELERATION FROM 0-60. IT LOOKS GOOD BUT ONLY BECAUSE OF A $6000 CUSTOM PAINT JOB.

Weakness:

WORTHLESS. IT AHS A LOT OF MILES 131,000 BUT IN 1.5 YEARS I HAD TO REPLACE
MANY PARTS.
RADIO/CD PLAYER $250
STARTER $200
FUSE BOX CAUGHT ON FIRE $100
HEATER CONTROLS $300
PLASTIC ARM REST BROKE OFF $210
TRANSMISSION WENT OUT $3000
SOON AFTER IT WAS REPAIRED IT EXPLODED LEAVING DENTS IN THE FLOOR AND MANY PARTS OUT IN THE ROAD. $WARRANTEED $450
MOTOR STARTED MAKING LOUD HAMMERING SOUND. $4500
NOW THE TRANS WONT SHIFT AND NOBODY CAN FIGURE OUT WHATS WRONG. GM BUILT AN UNFIXABLE CAR.

I BOUGHT THE CAR NOT RUNNING FOR $2800 BECAUSE THE DEALERSHIP THOUGHT IT NEEDED A MOTOR BUT IT JUST NEEDED TO BE TIMED BECAUSE THE TIMING BELT BROKE ON THE 3.4 MOTOR. BOUGHT IT CHEAP BUT NOW I REGREAT IT. THOUSANDS OF DOLLARS LATER I STILL CAN'T DRIVE IT BECAUSE OF TRANS PROBLEMS

The looks, the roominess is great. The car heats up very fast. Handles well when driving. The stereo is nice

Weakness:

Paint is cheap, it will stracth very easy. The brakes Suck they make all kinds of nice, and skip beats. The funny noises i hear all the time, specially when first starting it up, i always think something is wrong with it. I don't like how the engine will start to work so hard when AC is ran.

I bought this car with 58,000 miles on it, so i do not know how much abuse it has taken before i owned it. I would say that it does look nice, and will have heads turning, although i hear funny noises all the time. I don't have complaints about anything except the brakes suck. I probably will have to replace alternator soon, because the mechanic thinks it was beat to death.

My GP is an SE equipped like a GT: 3.8L, rear spoiler, upgraded interior, etc. Best things about it: Looks, comfort, convenience, roomy interior. I still love the red glow of the dash at night. Good gas mileage, but when I need it to go it really GOES. We recently took a 6-hr trip with 5 people in the car, everyone was comfortable. This is a smart car... a while back a warning light came on about tire pressure. I stopped and checked the tires, didn't see a problem so I kept driving. The next day the tire was flat. Turns out it had a nail in it, the car knew it before I did.

Weakness:

Reliability:
-Alternator went out at 38,000 miles (covered under ext. warranty)
Water pump started leaking at 45,000 miles, resulting in a sensor also going out because water was dripping onto it (also covered under ext. warranty)
-Headlight lens cover fell off at 53,000 miles. From what I've read this has happened to a LOT of people, they must have used defective glue in 97 and 98. What little glue was left had cracked and dried. Look for condensation in the headlights, if there is condensation it's only a matter of time before the covers fall off. Pontiac customer service was GREAT and replaced both covers at no charge (the one that was still there had heavy condensation)

Annoyances:
-Who is the idiot that designed the trip odometer? It's directly behind the speed needle so it's completely unreadable while driving 50 to 70 mph. Duh! You have to stop the car to read the trip odometer!
-AC fan rattles on setting 2 or higher. Not a big enough problem to justify ripping out the dash, just annoying.

Although I've had a few problems, I'm very happy with my GP. Has 55,000 miles now and still looks and runs like new. This car fits me perfectly.

DIFFICULT GETTING IN AND OUT OF CAR. ALWAYS HITTING FEET ON FRONT OF SEAT.STARTS TO LEAVE SCUFF MARKS,ITS AS THOUGH THE SEAT IS TO CLOSE TO THE DOOR EDGE WHEN GETTING OUT. THIS IS EVEN WITH SEAT COMPLETELY BACK.
BACK TAILIGHTS ARE CONSTANTLY GETTING MOISTURE IN THEM. HAS BEEN SERVICED ONCE FOR THIS BUT DID NOT CORRECT PROBLEM.POOR GAS MILEAGE

OTHER THAN GAS MILEAGE WHICH IS NOT GREAT HAVING THE 3.1 ITS A GREAT CAR. I HAVE DROVE CHRYSLER PRODUCTS FOR OVER 13 YEARS AND I SAID I WOULD NEVER GO TO ANOTHER MAKE OF VEHICLE. WELL I DID AND I AM GLAD. FOR THE PRICE OF AN INTREPID,YOU WILL NOT MATCH THE OPTIONS THAT PONTIAC HAS TO OFFER. FOR THE SAME PRICE YOU GET STANDARD OPTIONS NOT OPTIONAL AS TO THE INTREPIDS. DONT GET ME WRONG CHRYSLER IS GREAT BUT NOT FOR THEIR TRANSMISSIONS. I AM COMFORTABLE VERY PLEASED AND SATISFIED WITH THIS CAR NOW. I WILL MOST LIKEY HAVE ANOTHER ONE.

COMPARED TO MY 1995 EAGLE VISION I MISS THE ROOM IN THE INTERIOR. MOST LIKELY DO TO THE CAB FORWARD DESIGN FROM CHRYSLER. I CAN HONESTLY SAY I WILL NOT HAVE THE TRANSMISSION PROBLEMS ON THIS CAR AS I DID THE LAST ONE.

Strength:

It's the next best thing to women. Power and acceleration from the supercharged V6 is very linear throughout the entire power curve. This translates into instant acceleration no matter what RPM you decide to "step on it". Head turning looks that elicit comments from just about everyone is another plus for Grand Prix owners. Other items that make the Grand Prix driving experiance a pleasure is: heads up display; Bose sound system; braking system; handling (could be improved); ride; room/comfort;heated leather seat; 4 way lumbar support.

Weakness:

Though GM has come very close to hitting the mark, and having this become the next Honda Accord in the number of sales per year. They have come up short in some areas: passenger seat should be heated and have lumbar support; slight wind/road noise; fit & finish could use some refinement; interior buttons and knobs look as though they came from a lego set; they take away the graphic equalizer with the Bose sound system; cornering not quite what it should be for a performance car such as this.

I can only speak from my own experiance; which is that the car runs like a fine swiss watch with no trouble whatsoever. Next, consider the price/perfomance ratio and you have one heck of a car. My wife says, she has to compete with the other woman in my life, my GTP. Though, there are areas I beleive could be improved on; it still does not diminish the overall wonderful driver/owner experiance. The best advise I can give anyone: is get off the couch go down to your local Pontiac dealer and test drive one of these beauties. To know one is to love one.

Similar Products Used:

Ford Thunderbird: had the style of the Grand Prix but can't match the performance.
Honda Accord: Much more refined than the Grand Prix, but doesn't come close to the styling or performance. (How many girls have you ever heard scream out "hey nice Accord".

Looks great, handles well, love the acceleration, nice interior, HUD, Bose sound system, interior room.

Weakness:

Squeeks, rattles, buzzing. Poor paint quality, poor quality interior switches, no lateral support in seats. Poor build quality in general.

I love this car - BUT - I am getting to the point of thinking it's not worth it.
Here is what I have dealt with so far: The car arrived in the wrong color; there is overspray on the trunk, spoiler, and passenger side window moulding; there is a rattle in the drivers side door that the dealer still can't fix(it was present the day I picked up the car); the alternator went bad after 175 miles; plastic trim on the dash was cracked and scratched on deliver; passenger door was rubbing the front fender on delivery; there is a raised dimple in the plastic that runs along the lower passenger door; and as of today, the drivers side window has developed a scratch on the inside (something probably rubbing when the window is lowered)

The dealer has been ok most of the time, except for today. I brought the car in for the 4th visit in less than 2 months to have the passenger side window moulding replaced, because of the overspray, and to have the rattle in the driver's door fixed. After waiting almost 3 hours, they told me that the moulding that was just delivered for my car was damaged, and that pontiac changed the "style" of it so they will have to order moulding for both sides so they match?!?! Doesn't make much sense to me. They also did not fix the rattle.

Like I said, I love the car, but I'm thinking that a boring Accord would have given me more satisfaction in the long run. If you decide to buy one, maybe you will get lucky and be one of the many that seem to have had good experiences.

Strength:

The acceleration is great. For the price paid and being a four door sedan, the performance is still fun after three years. The handling is very good (especially having just replaced the tires). The drivers seat is comfortable and the trunk is decent size. The most impressive thing about this car has been the relability. I have over 75,000 miles on this car and other than oil changes, a transmission fluid change, adding a small amount of supercharger oil, I have had essentially zero repairs. I just had the front brake pads replaced and the rotors machined. The original tires went 73,000 miles with regular rotating. I am shocked at the lack of problems.

Weakness:

A few rattles in the interior, but only one that has been particularly annoying (near courtesy light assembly at front of ceiling at certain temperatures. Blower fan on HVAC is getting noisy lately. Headlights could be a little brighter on high beam. High beam indicator light is damn near blinding on dash. Frankly the problems have been minor.

If they still are building them comparably, which they should be because it is basically the same car, and the pricing is still relatively the same to other models, this is a great value for a performance sedan. No its not a high performance german sedan, but for less than half the price it is an excellent value.
