Electronics, heater, door seals Over all, I love this car. I am a college student who was looking for a reliable ride to and from college out of town, and I found it. My 92 had 90k on it when I bought it in 2k, now it has 120k and I have not been into the dealership for much. Little things are falling apart on the car, power door locks aren’t all working, door locks work when they want to, rear defroster and the heat in the car doesn’t work well, windows are a pain to roll up and down in the winter, stupid stuff. For some reason the car leaks. I have no sunroof but water fills the back seats whenever it rains. The automatic downshifter failed to work so the mechanic simply unplugged the connection. Before the connection was severed, the car stalled out whenever it dropped below 40mph. I put up with a lot I guess. The car gets around 22 miles per gallon. Brakes have been fine and the car has been very reliable. 3.4L engine has been a gem. Stereo speakers are a plus. Similar Products Used: 88 Ford Tempo, 96 Contour, 89 Crown Vic, 93 Olds Sierra |

Gas tank doesn't leak

Very poor engineering on the design and assembly of this car. Something is definitely wrong with the doors. Have had nothing but problems since buying this car. Window regulators have been replaced twice. All door glass was replaced because it was all gouged up from inside of the door panels. Brake rotors have been replaced once and turned on a lathe once. Right side moans and groans when turning. (Dealer says it's the tires, guess what? I work for a tire company and it is NOT the tires) Front end rattles like a car with 100,000 miles on it and it only has 14,000. Continuous problems with the doors. LR door rubbed on the LF door until it started pulling the body molding off the vehicle. Have had the doors adjusted 2 times by dealership but problem never goes away. Door glass is all scratched up AGAIN because windows scrape and screech when rolling them up and down. High speed vibration since driving off the lot. Very annoying when you're making a car payment every month. Am having front end worked on and molding replaced next week. Doors are actually gouging the weatherstripping around them to the point that it needs to be replaced. Doors rattle terribly because they have had to take them apart so many times to repair the windows. Had to have backup lights replaced as they were full of water. Front and rear struts creak and screech when going over bumps. Doesn't always start on the first or even the second crank. I am in the process of requesting a buy-back from GM as I don't want to pay good money to take the car to the repair facility every few months. If you like to visit repair shops, buy this car. Weakness:
I have had to replace the wiper regulator--as it made my wipers stay on. I had a pulsating feeling in the front end when braking--dealer says rotors and brakes were warn unevenly. Now I have a rubbing/roaring metal noise in the front end when I turn. First it was when I turned right, they replaced a bearing and it fixed that side. Now I'm hearing the same thing on the left side just 2 days later. The dealer is now trying to say that its my tires. I really like the car, but keep having minor problems Similar Products Used: 1998 Honda Civic without any problems at all for the 3.75 years I had it |

I love the aggressive styling and look of the Grand Am GT. Great power for its size and price Durable car all around Monsoon 6 speaker stereo has a great sound!
Weakness:
Few after-market accessories Hesitant shifting at high RPM Throttle response issues at 50k miles I bought this car to replace my old Mercury Sable, I wanted something an 18 year old could afford, but something sporty enough to turn heads. I feel like I made a great choice with my Grand Am GT. The engine puts out a great amount of tourque power getting me 0-60 in less than the advertised 6 sec. I love the handling, I haven't heard one tired squeal and I drive like I am Jeff Gordon. The advertised 175hp doesn't seem right, on the street I can easily keep up and beat guys driving cars that cost twice as much and require after-market parts. The 3.4L V6 sounds great and is just the right balance, it is way more poerful than a 4 cylinder, but I would get myself killed behind the wheel of a V8. That is the story with much of this car, it is just the right balance, it is not the beat-all sports car that will win races or drags; however it is not a cheap little import that feels like it will fall apart at full throttle. The car is made by GM who have a long history of making great looking and performing cars. Most of my complaints are purely cosmetic. The film on the B pillar is peeling and makes for a bad impression, and the shifting is a little hesitant at higher throttle. Also there is not a good selection of after-market performance and styling accessoried for the Grand Am. While this isn't somehting most consumers would consider there are those who wish to upgrade the power in their cars; if you are one of these people then this may not be the car for you. If you look hard enough you can find some performance increasing products, but the name-brands have very few applications for this model. Overall though, I feel that I made a smart decision when I bought this car, great styling, power, and accessories make this car a great buy. Window regulator. I have had my grand am for almost two years and I still love it. The only problem I have had with it, is my window regulator that gave out on me. But other than that, it's a great car. |
