Strength:

Stereo, handling, looks great, roomy enough for really tall people, I love the way the dash looks!

Weakness:

spark problems, grinding noise, sometimes it just doesn't have enough "get up & go"

This was my 2nd Grand Am (I had a 2002 but it was totaled) I really loved my first one but decided on getting the 2001 model this time, mostly because it only had 28K & a sunroof. I looked at the Grand Prix, but I hated the way the dash looked! After reading other reviews, I am kind of nervous of whats to come, as I haven't really had too many problems yet. This car really has good handling & a great stereo(except for the blown speaker). My 3 year old can also get in & out easily & I can fit just about anything in the trunk. This car does pretty well on ice & snow too. As for problems, I do have a grinding/groaning noise when I am turning left-mechanic says its tires. Also, my RPMS were jumping all over when it was trying to shift-I found out that it was only running on 2 cylinders instead of 4-something to do with some spark connectors, but it only cost me $80 total, including all the diagnostic stuff.

Strength:

Handling, perforance/very strong acceleration, 35 mpg on highway/25 city great interior styling, flawless paint, nothing broken.

Weakness:

Head-gasket failure, gas guage doesn't always read accuratly(I've always gone by mileage anyways)

I recieved my 1990 pontiac 2dr grand-am LE as a gift from my father about a year and a half ago. My father owned it since february of 1990 and has only taken it to be repaired once. It, like most other cars with a DOHC quad 4, blew a head gasket at about 59000 miles. The repair was cover under warrantee which means the only cost of vehicle maintainance on this car is the usual, oil, brakes, shocks, and tires. The muffler had to be changed twice due to rust, but that is not gm's fault. The paint is still like new, and the color is a hard one to keep looking good, red. It gets waxed about every half a year, and never has been gurage kept. This car has 150000+ miles on it and still runs with the best of them. It has never gotten a break. I still mash the pedal to the floor every day I drive it and it still puts me in the seat. I only plan on replacing the bearings, and I believe it'll last at least another 50000 miles. I may not have paid for it, but if I would have had to, it would have been worth every penny. The slogan is right, "Pontiac ... We build excitement".

Looks good

Weakness:

Constant repairs to the vehicle.

I have had my Grand Am for about 3 years and I think this is probably the worst car I have ever owned. I have had nothing but tedious problems with the car. I have to take it in twice a year to get the rotars turned and the brake pads replaced because they become worn out in a short period of time. The window trim around the windsheild is coming off, the gas gauge is broken which costs approx. $500 to fix, the CD player works sometimes. The headlights adjustment lever has broken and in order to get that fixed you have to replace the entire headlight which is $250.00. The knobs for the AC have broken off, the adjustment for the outside mirrors has fallen into the door. On top of all of that it's needs extensive front end work. If you are braking and turning at the same time you would think that the entire front end is falling off. This is by far the worst car that I have ever bought. I will never purchase another Pontiac product again.

Strength:

Fantastic driving. Tight turns. Solid body and power. A great cold-weather car for driving. Cool dashboard colors. Bucket seats comfy.

Weakness:

As mentioned, chromic stalling, IM or Heat Shield issues. Heater not so hot.

I have a 1989 Pontiac Grand Am, Quad 4 motor, four door. It was given to me a couple of years ago 2002 by my father. Of course, being a guy in his 80s, he babied the car and as these older gents do, he bought a new car. I needed a car and took the Pontiac. It ran superb for two years. I even drove it to New York City from Buffalo 410 miles one way , drove it back and forth a number of times to Toronto 90 miles one way, and also used it every day the way Americans love to use their cars. Slowly, over time, I have been experiencing a stalling problem. Here's what happens. I drive the car for a few miles, maybe 5, maybe 10. Things are fine until something heats up, and if I have to slow down at a red light or stop sign, the car sputters and stalls. I could drive the car for 100 miles on a superhighway and have no problems, but once I have to deccellerate, it'll stall. The situation is worse in hotter weather. The car rarely stalls in colder weather. I love January. Anyway, after the car stalls and sits for anywhere from 7 to 17 minutes, it'll start right up and I can move along to my local destination. But it will eventually stall again as I deccelerate. If the car sits for an hour or so, I can drive further than if it sits for 10 minutes. I have done huge research on the problem. Huge. I've taken it to mechanics. I've had mechanics who won't work on it. Some think it might be a solenoid issue. I've seen comments on myriad boards about others having this problem and it seems to be a mystery to most. The real tragedy is that GM has made a line of cars that have this problem. Anyway, after tons of research, here's the deal, and I hope this helps any of you out. The car is experiencing one of two serious problems. The first may be that a heat shield protecting fuel lines or filter may have shifted or broke or just eroded away, and this is causing fuel in the line to vaporize, thus causing the stalling. That's one theory, but I really don't subscribe to it. The theory I like is this: The car is having a serious Ignition Module (IM) failure, which may also be linked to other electrical malfunctions. The IM needs to be replaced and you might want to replace, probably should replace, the Crank Sensor. The cost is steep. To drive it onto a Pontiac dealer lot is a minimum, no questions asked, $75.00 for one hour of mandatory diagnostics, even though you know it's an IM problem. The diagnostics could take two hours. Hopefully it won't take three. The mechanics will test every aspect - they have better equipment at dealers than do regular mechanics, and determine the exact point where fuel is not getting into the line and what is causing it it to choke or vaporize - certainly the IM. The cost of the Ignition Module is around $200. The crank sensor is around $30. So with one hour of diagnostics, and the parts, we're talking $305 without labor and any other parts. I hope this helps you out. As for me, I was just given, by a friend, a terrific 1993 Nissan Altima with 181,000 miles on it and it's good for another 75,000, I'm sure. Oh, I know you're probably wondering, why do people keep giving this guy cars? I guess I'm just a likable guy.

Style handling acceleration comfortable ride

Weakness:

humming noise at interstate speeds

I've had this car for about 6 months and am very happy with it. It handles very well and has very impressive acceleration. To this date I have yet to have any mechanical problems with it. I have taken it on a couple long trips and it has offered a very nice ride, my only tiff is an odd humming noise I've heard a couple times on the freeway at about 70mph. Other than that, this car has performed very well and I'm satisfied with my purchace.

Style, Get up an go

Weakness:

Apparently they are coming but nothing yet. Luckily I have a spare car just in case.

Thought I had a good car until I stumbled upon this site. I bought my car as a program car with 21,000 miles on it. I thought I paid to much until I saw how some of Ya'll paid in the high 20's. You can get a nice used Mercedes for that much money. I've only had my car a little over 3 months and so far it's ran pretty well. The only two problems I had was a bad CD player, which was replaced under warranty. The second problem was where the ignition key didn't want to come out until the car sat for 10 to 15 minutes. The dealer first replaced the ignition which didn't help. The second time I took it to the dealer they figured out that it was a switch inside the shifter that was sticking. When it would stick the key wouldn't come out because the car still thought it in gear. Both problems were fixed with no hassle from the dealer. They even called a couple times later down the road to make sure everything was still working right. Even though I haven't had any problems and I gave it 4 stars, I'll probably still get rid of it when my warranty expires at 39,000 miles. The only thing I don't like about it is that the car runs to hot for my liking. It is always reading just over the 200 degree mark. I think I will take out the thermostat for the summer if the car will run right afterwards. I did run out of gas like an idiot once. The gas light came on and I figured I could still drive a while like I could with my Intrepid, but I actually only got about 15 miles before I ran out. Luckily it happened near a gas station. Now I drive 300 miles then fill it up again. I got the car because it was fast and has a nice loud radio, and it looks good. It is easy to dog this car because it takes off so fast. I drove it to Daytona in April, 700 miles each way, doing between 70 and 90 miles per hr the whole way nonstop, except for gas, with no problem. The car ran flawlessly and I had a nice smooth ride.

Quiet engine, great factory speakers, a fun, zippy car, good body design

Weakness:

Interior coming apart and unglued, Major malfunctions with Emergency Traction System, brakes need replacement and maintenace more than usual, gas door never stays shut, runs through oil very fast.

I've had this car for four years now and I love it. It's completely reliable and has a good pick-up for a 2.4L twin-cam four-cylinder. I've had to do very little maintenance on this car and it has 117000 miles on it. At 64000, I had to replace the water line and nothing else major has gone wrong. There are a couple of small electrical problems: backseat power window doesn't work anymore, dome light doesn't always come on, some wiring problems with the radio. My biggest complaint is that the Emergency Traction System is completely faulty, which triggers my Check Engine light to stay on. Randomly, the ETS will decide to work for a week, but then it will stop again. Does anyone else have problems with their ETS? Overall, the good outweigh the bad and I will definately stick with Pontiac. This car is well worth the money I paid for it.

Looks good, rides real nice, and great on gas

I have to tell you I am very happy with my car. I bought it used from a back yard dealer, I know that the car had been in an accident and most of the parts under the hood had been replaced with new ones. For being a used car, it still rides great, there is 180 thousand miles on it and she still runs like a raped ape. Preventive Maintenance is the key words to owning any car. I have owned several cars in the past and never did I own one that rides like my grand am. I have been told lots of bad things about my car. But I for one am not going to listen. I will personally do anything that I have to do , too keep it on the road. I love my grand am, and wouldn't trade it for nothing.

this car easily fits the family that has just enough money for entry level style, performance and functionality. My family loves this car. I like the car because it is clearly a leader when it comes to acceleration. The 195 ft-lbs of torque really get it off of the line in a confident full focused manner.Passing is also a plus too.The mid range torque is wonderful. This car is not a sports car though. The suspension was never set up to aggressively take coners and tight curves, but it is good enough inspire confidence during my daily drive.
