Weakness:

Everything about this car is weak.

This is the second Pontiac Grand Am that I have bought. You would have thought that I would have learned after the first one that they aren''t worth buying. They have electrical problems, the oil light comes on even though the oil is full. The brakes have to be replaced every year. I had the AC fixed less than 8 months ago and it still does not work (now it may be something electrical). The struts squeak, I''ve had the strut plates on both sides fixed and the strut arm on one side replaced. Now the other side needs to be replaced. This morning on my way to work the car wouldn''t go over 40 MPH up hill. The temperature gauge has been showing the car to be running hot. I''ve had it check twice only to be told that its within normal limits. I know the head gasket is probrably blown. I''m making an apointment today to have the car fixed for the AC, the struts and strut arm and the head. This car has been a money pit since I''ve had it. THe funny thing is that when I bought this car I was told that the problem with the head gasket had been fixed and that I shouldn''t have that problem with this car. My wipers have not worked right since I''ve had the car, they slow down to practically nothing when it rains and the lights dim when it rains, I''m told this is normal. This is only part of whats wrong with this car. I will never buy another GM product again.

Strength:

I liked the style of the car. Liked the basic features like Auto-transmission and Air conditioning, Liked that it also included ABS brakes. -Incredible gas milage. Easily gets the same milage as my Mazada 323. Very comfortable for long trips, it has a very smooth ride and doesn''t wonder all over the road during heavy wind gusts.

Weakness:

SOHC 4 cylinder engine. Poor head design with the cold air intake beside the hot exhaust port. This leads to metal fatigue and premature head failure Faulty sensors that cause erroneous trouble lights to light. Cooling system is a closed system, making it difficult to troubleshoot problems. Faulty rear defroster timer switch caused electrical problems like brake lights to stay on.

I bought a lease return in 1993,with 32,000 KM on it. Before I broke 80,000 KM I had to replace the cylinder head because the original had cracked. Even with the new head the engine still overheats during the summer The repair bill was $1,700.00 At 90,000 KM the electronic switch for the transmission failed and the car would stall every time you stopped or put the car in gear. Repair bill was $350.00 The oil light constantly flashes even though there the oil is full and changed every 5,000 KM. I''ve even tried synthetic oil and premium double guard filters, no difference. The ABS breaks never worked properly and now less than 2 years after having new rotors, drums and pads put in, the brakes now leap frog. This after putting a whopping 7,500 KM since the brake job. Rear defroster never worked. It turns on but never turned off. When you forget to turn it off it usually caused the power door locks to fail. Also seems to suffer from time to time during wet weather where the engine runs ruff like it is about to stall. Still don''t know what is causing this as it is not consistant.

I''ve since owned a Toyota Celica and Mazada 323 Protege. Sold the Celica (too many tickets) and am very happy with the Mazada (170,00 KM and only regular maintenance no major repairs yet)

Fun to drive

Weakness:

Drivetrain, brakes, cheapness, windows, squeaks and rattles

This car sucks! I had it sice it was brand new. The front brakes shoke the whole car, The side windows were replaced 2 times each due to them scratching. I had 2 new transmissions put in, 3 new rack and pinion steerings, The fuel gauge stopped working, I had 3 new cd player/radios put in because they kept failing, Inside door panel replaced because it was cracking. I could go on for more, but thats a good chunk of the problems, I sold this car for a 2002 GMC Sierra Z71. I am very happy with it.

Strength:

It is a good looking car. At-home feel interior. Good ergonomics.

Weakness:

The car has so much plastic in the interior. The sound is not that great. As everyone, the brakes are terrible. It shakes like crazy for the last 40,000 miles (currently 87K). Pathetic get-up-and-go power for a 3.1L V6 automatic.

I have been disappointed in this car. I would never buy a Pontiac (wife bought before married). They are cheaply made. You get what you pay for. Try a Honda Civic.

Strength:

Quick acceleration.

Weakness:

Bad gas mileage

I just recently purchased a 1999 Pontiac Grand AM GT. I''''ve done some highway driving and I''''m only getting about 250-260 miles on a tank of gas. Is that correct for this car.

Strength:

The look is a turn head. I just love the driving feeling. Gives a really good ride. Very quiet.

Weakness:

Like everybody: brakes ! I''ve been lucky, the dealer replaced my front rotors on warranty because GM did recognize the weakness.

I leased a 1999 Grand Am GT. The only major problem I had with it is the front disc brakes. The 2 other minor problems I had was the lower backup lights were filling with water (I could put some gold fish in it) and a door trim. Both issues were fixed under warranty. The car is a real fun to drive and has a real good look. For car lovers only ! I liked it enough to start a new lease with another one.

Great power and handling. Strong stereo. Very comfortable. Very sporty looking, especially in black with headlight covers.

Weakness:

WINDOWS,WINDOWS,WINDOWS.....I have had the car for almost a year. I now have a 2 door car with 2 windows that dont roll down. The motor in the drivers side failed and the passenger side door regulator clips broke off. If you go to the dealership to have this fixed your looking at $500 just in parts. Because they will try to get you to buy the window regulators for both windows. Which in my case I don''t need. They will not sell you the motor unless you buy the regulator. $250......I got the motor by itself out of a 99 SE in the junk yard for $50....And the dealership finally broke down and sold me the 2 clips I needed for the other window which was $25...they tried to have me spend $250 for it. Other than that I here the brakes are horrible but so far mine have been fine, although they do shake at high speeds.

Well, when I first bought this car I loved it. I still do but the GM SERVICE stinks. They think you are stupid. As for the car it runs great but after reading a lot of the reviews on it, I''m afraid to see what will happen next.

Strength:

small but large enough for 5 people that are all 150-250lbs. Handles well, wonderful stereo in the 95. Good pick up and quiet running.

Weakness:

radiator, head gasket and head at high mileage. Body outlast the engine.

We have driven grand-ams for the last 10 years. The first was a 92 bought as a program car with 9,000 miles. The other was from an estate with 35,000. Loved the room an handeling of the 92 so chose to buy the 95 in 98. Have had some problems with radiators on both with overheating with no apparent reason and with the light staying on even when not overheated. Have had regular repairs, brakes, spark bugs etc. on both until they reached 166,000 and both at that mileage blew head gasket. The 92 we replaced the timing chain then the head gasket blew-rebuilt the engine but head had warped so was not successful.
