Strength:
The only strengths I can think of is the speed and the way the GT looks. It is a very smooth looking car.
Weakness:
Not very good on gas. I bought this car brand new and I have had many, many problems with it. First the left blinker light would not work. Gas gauge went out, CD player stopped working, radio started acting up, tape player eats up my tapes. Every light you can think of comes on and says that there is a problem. I would NOT recommend this car to anyone. It is a waste of your money. Nice looking car with a lot of speed. Great car for those who want speed but do not want to pay a lot. Great family car with speed. Similar Products Used: This is the second car I have ever owned. I should have kept my Saturn |

Strength:
Their only strenth and I am sure pretty much all Grand Am owners will agree, is there looks. They look good thats all I can say about them.
Weakness:
I don't even have enough space to explain. First of all one problem would be ok, every once in a while. I keep up maintainence very well on my car, but every time I fix one thing on this stupid car, something else goes wrong. Here is a list: AC shorts out a fuse, which causes the car to not go out of park. I fixed it at the cost of $699.00. I have had to take the car on two occasions due to the extreme pulling due to it idling very high. Engine light was on I was told it was broken wires. Cost of that was $65.00. Then the car would excellerate and decellerate, this was also a burned wire. What's up with the wires people? I have had a fog light go out and a week later a turn signal light go out, which is heck to get to! I have spent more than $400 in brake drum repair. I have 3 windows that will not roll down! And now my right tire is whinning, which I am assuming is the wheel berring, and of course that is going to cost alot to fix. The car still idles high even after I had a diagnostic tree test performed, at a Pontiac dealer. This car was only 2 years old when I bought it. These problems are rediculous. I think the car that I have now sucks as bad as the first one I bought. I should have learned my lesson after the first Pontiac piece of crap I bought. The first one was a 1987 model. They both sucked, and I will never own another one! I bought this car in 1998, and it was only 2 years old when I got it. Strength:
It is a beautiful car. It has good power, plenty of interior room, and trunk space.
Weakness:
Needs constant attention. Its like trying to keep up the maint. sched. for a top fuel dragster. The car is junk. I have had this car for over two years and it seems like it needs constant attention. Idiot lights ( ser. eng, change oil, fluid low) seem to come on for no appearant reason. Went to the shop onc for ser. eng. light, turns out the head light was out, wife paid 117.00 to replace bulb.I have had coolant leaks, brakes need replaced as often as the oil. In general I am not happy with this car and I would not reccomend buying one. Similar Products Used: S-10, Sentra, Mustang, Ranger, Celica, LTD, |

Weakness:
trac system needs improvement and the whole computer controlled bull crap on all the new cars needs to go. serv eng light is the biggest joke ever it is gms way of getting the owners to spend money for nothing i am a mechanic i know this the resale value is a joke also i have only had this car 3 months and i notice a few problems. i think i spy a intake gasket leak, sometimes i swear i smell coolant from the exhaust. bought the car with 79410 miles now has 81800. my first notice is the idiot light gm has inserted for us daily drivers. check engine light (like all american cars) comes on then goes off. with my warranty i checked it out and i was told the primary air injection pump for the fuel injectors was the problem- it ran perfect it was fixed then the light comes on again 2 days later i had it scanned again then i was told 2nd air inj pump i waited it out and the light went off never on since. biggest problem is with ETS system (trac sys) if you barely hit the gas on a wet day all the service light go crazy and cry about the problem the radio does the same thing as the other owners--my solution ditch the fact stereo and drop in an aftermarket cd player takes care of that. other than that so far its an ok car Similar Products Used: previous vehicle 1997 nissan pickup (no problems) go figure it is japaneese have had many other used cars this grand am is my newest car probably will be my last american new car |

Strength:
Sporty car, lots of fun to drive. Convenient with it's four doors and large trunk.
Weakness:
The fan for the heating/cooling system is crap. It won't work on the two lowest settings. I'm also not a fan of the ABS - this is my first car w/ABS and I just don't like the feeling. It feels like it takes extra effort to stop. Radio is also a slight problem. Sometimes when I turn down the volume it jumps up instead. Car runs pretty good, but sometimes whines in cold weather. The rotors had to be replaced before I bought the car, and also something in the engine was leaking oil I think..and had to be replaced. My mechanic warned me this would be expensive to fix later on down the road and suggested I not buy the car unless the dealer fixed it. They brought it to a Pontiac dealership and got it fixed. I do like my car, but I wish I didn't spend over 9K on it. the style of the car and the smooth ride and cornering makes it perferable over some other cars. the 3.3L V6 has alot of power and the acceleration is satisfying
Weakness:
the transmission went in the first 2 weeks we got the car. only one fog light works. and 2 weeks ago a plastic nipple in the cooling system broke causing all the anti freeze to leak out. over all id say its a pretty good car. the engine is perfect, the body has a little surface rust that will be sanded and painted the summer. there is no body work done on the car and the seats are real comfortable. for 1500 dollars, the runs great. the metallic neon blue paint job is a great color and goes well with red. Strength:
Not all bad. We like the looks. Peformance is adequate (although I think the V6 Shadow would have sucked the headlights out of the GT!) Handles well. Comfortable. Fit & finish good (4th Canadian Winter). Drivetrain releable.
Weakness:
See the summary. Bottom line is that we're not very comfortable "growing old" with this car - especially after rading the litany of complaints on this site. When we test drove the car (brand new), the "check engine" light came on. The next day, after taking delivery, it came on again - result, four trips to the dealer. We also experienced the weird front wheel/tire noise. I persisted until GM authorized replacement of the rims with "refinished" ones. A short time later, the noise returned - it was the stock GoodYear tires causing the noise. $800 later (new tires) the noise was gone. Replaced all rotors and pads @50,000KM with aftermarkets. Now have 98K & going strong - EVERYONE says GM brake parts are junk (even the dealer service rep). Pos'n 1/2 on the heater fan switch quit & resistor replaced under warranty. Now out of warranty & it's gone again - I'm still trying to find the resistor so I can change it myself this time! As I type this, the car's in the garage getting a front wheel bearing replaced - I'm told this is also VERY common with GM FWD cars - oh well, what's another $300. - $400. CDN??! Previously owned a '93 Shadow ES V6 & put 214,000KM on it without ever going back to the dealer! Matter of fact, we've never had problems like this with any of the 4 or 5 Chryslers we've owned. Strength:
reliable for commute, good gas mileage, good stereo except for chipmunk cassette player, comfortable seats, good steering, holds the road.
Weakness:
Many of many:Speedo says 70,how fast am I going?50.So when the computer thinks I'm goin 110,but I'm really goin 90 it cuts all my power off.Power windows?Well if you can say 3 out of 4 ain't bad,1 works when it wants.Auto transmission, only shifts out of 1st on good days, when it is not PMS'ing.Oil light loves making appearences, almost constantly, guess it wants to light up my life.Power door locks? All they do is unlock, but never lock, until I put it in gear.Never buy a Grand Am. What can I say,a $700.This is my 2nd Grand Am.You'd think I would have learned after buying a new one in 97 with tons of problems.I've had it 2 weeks, replaced the coil pack, plug insulators, motor mounts,CV axle. And what's this annoying problem with the turn signals. One way works, the other way never works, and I've replaced all the bulbs, relays, and check connections.PAINT????What paint???They did a recall,so I heard, for the paint on 92 Grand Am's,but evidently they didn't call this one back. There basically is no paint, just that nice dull grey primer. And what's with this headlight, low beam will not work unless I beat on it.All connections are fine,no loose wires, makes good contact, replaced bulbs 3 times.Never again will I buy a Grand Am.I don't understand,Grand Prix's are nice,I had a 93 Grand Prix, but a drunk idiot killed it for me. acceleration(v6) handling breaking is ok color( silver) the look (outside&inside) people see this car everywhere and they still look at it.
Weakness:
everyone and their momma ownes one ghetto people seem to like them I don't know why? crappy resale value I bought my car brand new,it still has the protecting stickers on it when I picked it out,I decided on the Grand Am because I was on a budget 22K and down, and refused to but a hyundai sonata that car just sucked so for about 20K I got alot of features, such features I'm still figuring out. But initially I was pleased. One month later my power window motor needed replaceing no biggie, then my service engine soon and trac off light kept coming on, was diagnosed as a computer problem which they fixed. and that was it for about a year and a half so nothing for that period of time is pretty good. And since the calipers needed replacing made a horrible creaking/crunching sound dealer replaced under warranty. So in two years and 25,000 miles that makes me happy. I am very pleased with this car and plan to hold on for a while around 4-5 years Similar Products Used: Honda Accord Ford contour |
