Plymouth Neon
Strength:
Good acceleration. Good in snow.
Weakness:
Hydroplanes easily. Notorious for blowing head gaskets. Loud brakes with no hopes of changing that. Poor paint/finish adhesion. Thinking of buying a Neon? STOP! Stop now, while you still have some money! I''ve always been a dodge fan - but this car was a BIG mistake! Paid 6,900 for it 21 months ago, and now that I''m trying to trade it, the blue book value is 2,100. Right after I bought it, it had a small area of paint flake off. I touched it up. It continued. I touched it up again. I now have 20% of the paint falling off of the roof, and a huge area on the back fender with no paint. Everytime I take it to the carwash, it throws chunks of paint clear to the ceiling. So sad to see that happen. Replaced the head gasket 1 month ago, and was told be several mechanics that Neon''s are notorious for head gasket problems regardless of the year of manufacture. Like loud squealy brakes? Then this car is for you. It really turns heads in my neighborhood as I squeal up loudly at the stopsigns every day. Replaced the brakes with no difference. Mechanics tell me there''s nothing they can do about that....Neon''s have squealy brakes. |

Neon
Taken from CAR magazine, Jan 2000. "Neon is an inert gas, and its automotive namesake is a similarly empty experience. Equipment levels are good, 2.0 litre engines willing and there''s a very nice warranty. But nasty to drive, cheaply constructed and too expensive for its bottom-end market. SPEC NOTES: Cheap is the only sensible way here, and the entry-level 2.0 is a lot of car for the money. RIVALS: Hyundai Elantra. OUR CHOICE: Nope. As harsh as the strip light it''s named after. |

Strength:
Great gas mileage (30+). Engine has been surprisingly dependable. Relatively low maintenance overall. Fun to drive. With fold down rear seats - can carry 8 feet of lumber!
Weakness:
Noisy engine. Car struggles a bit with a/c on. Windows rattle when not fully closed. Well after 7 years, I finally had to put a muffler on my car. That was the first repair, otherwise it is has been normal maintenance. Certainly the cheapest to maintain car I ever had. One speaker went bad, but that might be result of when a tree that fell on the car! It''s a good car for the money, not too big or small, and fun to drive. Body has had zero rust - and finish has stayed good. Unlike the Dodge, the Plymouths of this year were made in the US, not Mexico. Maybe it made a difference? |

Strength:
handles like a race car. GREAT gas milage. Small for tight parking. Mine has cruize control even though it''s a stick whigh is really nice to have.
Weakness:
Head gasket nightmare. Squeaky brakes. Cig lighter doesn''t work. Peeling paint. Dents easily. Horn doesn''t work. I have to admit, I do like my Neon. BUT, I have oil in my radiator due to a faulty head gasket. I have yet to call the 800 # but I have heard that they will pay for most of the work. The # is 1-800-992-1997. |

Strength:
Handling, power and braking very good, value for the money. good size trunk too. roomy rear seat. Generous size cupholders, its'' let''s GO attitude.
Weakness:
The usual Neon...though better this time around. Noise...Vibration...Harshness. One day MoPar might get it right. Fit and finish while much better still pales next to a Honda, or Toyota. O.k. first off, let''s face it. This is NOT a Honda,Toyota, etc. This little 4 door basic sedan has the 132 H.P. motor that vibrates more than it should, but it has great power for such a light car. The ride is not in the Japanese class, but boy it handles great. Turn in is quick and precise. Understeers predictably as most front drivers do, but easy to control when you lift a bit and the line comes back into shape. Economy is good, with even spirited driving. The comfort/convience is good ,but again still lacking the Japanese refinement. Room is quite good, and I like the cup holders. Way better than my brothers Cavilier, but even the Cav is quieter. I looked at the used Honda''s and Toys'' and wow, incredible how expensive these cars are used. For the same money this Neon cost, a Honda had to be at least 3 or more years older than the Neon to equal its'' price. I think the point is that it is made for good transportation, NOT great transportation. For the short trips and occational long trips, you could do worse. This Neon has spunk and personality. So far the only nagging thing with the Neon is a bad dash speaker, but otherwise the main performance items are every bit as good if not better than what I had from Japan. Just that the refinement is not there. Kind of reminds me of how some the raw early Japanese cars were. NVH is better than the Neon I drove a few years back. This car has a let''s GO attitude that I didn''t expect. Merging onto freeways is so easy. I like the car for what it is, but I would never confuse it with what the finest that Japan can offer. That said, the Neon is just fine. If I could afford another Toy, or Honda, I would have one, but I can''t so the Neon with its'' virtues, and rough edges and noise just add to its'' personality. Love it or hate it, there it is. Drive one and see if it just wouldn''t make the ideal 2nd car, or your teens'' first car. Rating below is definately comsurate relative to what you can get today. The Neon needs to keeps its'' Spunky attitude and go to finishing school, and it would be killer coupe/sedan that Daimler/Chryslser could really sell against the Japanese cars. It handles pretty well.
Weakness:
Horible reliability! (Check consumer reports if you don''t believe me.) I can''t stand driving this car because I always have to worry about whether or not it will get me back home. I purchased this car when it was only a few months old. I have had nothing but problems with it since. The A/C has nevered worked properly and I finally gave up on it after having it in the shop several times per year. I have also had many problems with the engine. For those people considering one, DON''T GET ONE. For those who have one and haven''t had problems, count your blessings and get rid of it while you still can. This car has turned me off from Dodge and American cars in general. From now on I will only purchase a Honda or Toyota! Similar Products Used: None |

Neon ACR Coupe
Strength:
Corners Well, Very Reliable, takes little fuel for a lot of miles. Good performance if you boot it.
Weakness:
Little Aftermarket support. Loud. Paint falls off (expensive!) Variable build quality from Belvedere Ohio plant. ( I got a good one!) Scheduled maintenance tends to get expensive..... Good little car, lots of noise at 75, corners on rails. Clutch/Brake pads original at 112000 miles. Avg 30-34 on highway. The ACR package makes this a fun little car with more cornering power and stopping power than most. The DOHC motor seems weak at lower revs, but gets happier above 4000 rpm. This car is really at home running above 4000 rpm- but your hearing will suffer unless you wear ear plugs. Similar Products Used: Toyota Celica |
