Strength:

Reliable, lots of luxury for the money, uses regular gas, inexpensive to insure, smooth and quiet ride on the highway, handles good, smooth shifting automatic transmission.

Weakness:

Lack of low end torque with 3.1 v6,large heavy doors, low resale price.

Have had a few problems so far: rear speaker blown, drivers door sometimes hits the body when closed, body cladding screws missing-had to replace. More of a highway car than a city car. Over all, I'm very satisified with the car.

Strength:

Looks sharp. Roomy and practical.

Weakness:

Performance, build quality, reliability, safety!

If you're elderly, or just stupidly, blindly patriotic, this is the car for you. If you're open-minded, practical, and think a car should be both enjoyable and dependable, beware: this is a BOAT. I've heard of "boats" before, but this car drives and runs like the Titanic, post-iceberg. 4 years of religious maintenance (at the cost of several thousands of dollars) and easy highway driving, and mine CAUGHT FIRE. I kid you not, the fuel pump went bad and this car caught FIRE.

I'd go into details, but instead I'll point you to the Web site where I documented these details:

http://www.prism.gatech.edu/~gt2183b/

You'll also find comments from craven cowards who launch personal, ignorant attacks from phony return e-mail addresses. Isn't that right, "Greg" aka "couchess@noway.com"?

If you're open-minded, then take this wisdom and use it to NEVER BUY ANOTHER AMERICAN AUTOMOBILE. You will regret it.

If you're masochistic enough, or just stubborn, and have ignored everything here and want your own Cutlass, I recommend you stock up on alternators, fuel pumps, brake hardware, and oil system parts, as well as every one of those cheap bits of flimsy plastic on the interior. Buy these in bulk quantity, of possible.

This is the best car I've ever owned. I originally purchased it with 60,000 miles. Also very unique. Every available option was installed on the car at the factory. All leather has held up well. Everything still works great and I'm at 105,000. Nothing but a good oil change. Starts in the dead of winter after sitting for 3 weeks within 1-2 seconds of cranking. Paint is perfect still (I wax it quite often) and the frame has not a spot of rust on it. Has never been to a mechanic. Original headlights, taillights and all!

12 way driver's seat. And air powered lumber, head rest, side arms and leg pillow. There's enough lights inside this thing to make you feel like you're going to the moon.

Weakness:

Had to replace the alternator once and do the brakes. (Which were simple since it is disc all around)

No bad qualities about this car. I plan on storing it and restoring it to it's original beauty. Horrible on mileage..(explained below)

Okay, I admit, I did do one small modification. Since I live right down the street from the Infamous Summit Racing...I couldn't help but install a Flowmaster Muffler. This was good, but bad too. Good because it bumped up my hp by about 10 or so. It sounds GREAT with the 3.1L!!! and it does have quite a bark to it., however, my drive computer indicates I lost about 8 mi./gal. So, yeah, I sacrificed mileage for HP!!! I also run a ratio of 4:1 of CAM2 racing fuel in the summer. It's a 16 gallon tank, so it's 4 gallons of CAM2, to 12 gallons of high test 93 octane. It really cleans out the carbon on the fuel injectors. Not to mention, my 0-60 time is somewhere around 7.5 or so. Which isnt' so bad for this heavy of a car.

Anyway, great car, love it, won't think about selling it EVER!!

This would be a great car for someone with taste for a good balance of luxery and sport.

I think the best part of the car is the body and suspension. You could drive it through a tree. the suspension has an extreme amount of miles on it and shows no signs of weakening in the least.Plus, it has enough room under the hood for almost any engine you want. I recently dropped and small block chevy 350 into it and I am loving it. I've done nothing to the suspension (yet) and it handles great.
The interior of the car has enough square footage to live in. it's huge. The car has a lot of potential to be played with as long as you have an imagination. I longer have the back seat, replaced it with a wall of speakers. I absolutely love the car and body style.

Weakness:

None

All in all I think the car is great. It is just a great car to play with. Even fully stock it was fun to drive, definately a car to just relax in. Everyone I know loves riding in it. One of the greatest things is that not one of those little rice grinding hondas can outrun it or outshine it. It'd almost as old as I am will probably be around for a lot longer. what car that is built now could possibly survive seventeen or eighteen years and still look and run this well? Screw those little Vtecs a type R's. I wouldn't trade my car for any of'em.

This is my 1st and only car I ever had. Its still going strong with 137000 miles on it. I only put in about $2000 in repairs in 7 years but it sure beats having a car payment these days + $38 for insurance per month what a bargain. The car had its trannie rebuilt before I purchased it, it never gave me any problems yet. The 3.8L engine is still origional, never had any problems with it. All I can say is that this must be one of the greatest and most reliable cars the US ever made, if you take care of it it will take care of you.

Strength:

Very solid, has over 250,000 miles on it and the transmission is just now starting to show it's age, it slops between park and reverse. The engine was rated as still in very good condition according to mechanics. Car has been babied since bought new March, 89. Has every possible option and has been nothing but a great car.

Weakness:

Engine is a little weak for the weight of the car, 2.8 125hp V6, fixed in 1991 with the introduction of the 3.4 DOHC 210hp.

Of course the car is old and different people have different experiences with the same car. But this car has been nothing short of a great car for over 12 years. 405,000km(~250,000 miles) on her and still has the get up and go that she had when new. I do admit the engine is weak for the size of the car(3200lbs), but it still rips the imports pretty good because of torque in the low end(Anyone skeptical, ask me if I care). Very poor acceleration in the high end in last gear(over 110kph). Very comfortable, very roomy and lots of cargo space for a mid-sized coupe. For a car of it's size it has good handling, lowered it would be excellent, it does ride a little high.

Strength:

Dependable, bought it in '93 with 66k miles, now have 172k.
Besides general maintenance its been a good car.
Leather seats are still in good shape.

Weakness:

The Stock Delco Radio. Body rust and paint fading, but car is 12 years old.
The Champman security system would cause the car not to start and I couldn't get the hood open once the system was turned off. So I disconnected it and cut the cable that locks the hood down.
The sliding mood roof has always rattled.
The engine could have used more horsepower.
The handling isn't that great, but its not a sports car either.

The car has the 3.3L Fuel Injected engine, which has been very dependable.
It doesn't blow smoke, link oil or anti-freeze.
I still get around 25 - 30 mpg. All the accessories still work.
I replaced the struts and stocks at 100k miles. I've replaced the fuel filter and spark plug wires as preventitive maintenance, not because I had to.
The radiator and fan motor were replaced. At 135k miles the trans. was rebuilt.
I only replaced the front rotors and back wheel drums once.
Besides these problems the car has always gotten me to where I wanted to go. And I've always changed the spark plugs, oil, oil filter and air filter at regular intervals.

My favorite feature was the little computer that told you everything from miles per gallon to collant temp. I think that it is a very sharp looking car for being 12 years old. I really loved that car it was a shame to get rid of it.

Weakness:

About 6 months after I bought it it started dying out on me when I was coming to a stop on an incline. I took it to several mechanics and no one could find a problem with it. About a month later I lost all gears except drive. I had to have the transmission rebuilt. Luckily I know someone who owns a transmission shop. Transmission was very hard to get out. Then on top of that I had a worn motor mount, which is probably what cause the transmission to crack. After everything was done the car ran smooth for about 2 days the car started dying out again. So again I took it to several mechanics and no one can figure out what the problem is. So before any more problems arose I traded it in towards a new car. I got 1400 for it so I made some money off of it.

Over all I got my money's worth out of this car. If you can get one of these cars for a bargain like I did do it. It is a great car to get you where you want to go, even if it is just cruising around. If you don't pay that much for it then you'll be able to afford any repairs. This car has alot of potential for a project car. Just make sure you get a full inspection before you buy it.

Roomy, good on gas, fairly reliable,in 7 years has left me standing once (and that was my fault). This has been a very good car what has went wrong has been do to age and use, this car has 180,000 miles on it.

Weakness:

Electrical-hate those damn digital dashes. The original one lasted two years and went out completely, the second from a donor car lasted two months. But at least I can slam my fist on the dash in the right place to see how much gas I have. Power window switches, power window motor ground wires. and egine oil leaks (that is common problem with these cars with the 3.1 or 2.8 engines 99% of the time its the gasket for the distributer plug that dry rots).

This has been a good car. period. I've done woefully bad upkeep on the car and it has been very forgiving. I don't nitpick a car to death its a tool and like everthing else is not perfect and will have some problems. I have owned most other makes of cars ranging from the 70s-90s and this car has been better than most other cars I've owned including imports. I expect to spend some money on a car as it ages but what some people spend for repairs IS phenominal and I'm in the wrong rackett,(I could retire in a couple of years on what I've seen spent for repairs in these reviews).
