Strength:

Only had a few problems. It drives really well considering the mileage. It is really reliable and handles all kinds of Wisconsin weather well!

Weakness:

The seats stick, but that's about it...I can't move them around much. It's a great teenager car!

I purchases my Oldsmobile in the $1000.00 range and it now has 272,000 miles and has cost me under $300 total repairs...new tires, brakes, etc. I would reccomend this car to teenagers and people who want a dependable car to use for traveling to and from work. Runs well on Interstates and highways...has great speed pickup and runs well.

Model Reviewed: Olds Cutlass Supreme Quad4 HO

Strength:

Purchased car with 65,000 miles. Very Fast, 5 speed is geared just right. Engine is absolutely flawless has over 128,000 miles on it. Change the oil every 3,000 miles and new plugs at 90,000 and 120,000 miles. No other expense. I get 30 miles per gallon on the highway, 22 in city. This car has a true high performance engine. If you doubt it, look at the spec's. For those who have a passion for speed and excellent engineering look at the Quad4 HO. You won't be dissappointed.

Weakness:

Dash board shakes when I go over 90MPH.

$6,500.00. If you appreciate a true High Performance engine and like its high rpm characteristics, bulletproof bottom end, oil cooler, double roller chain, etc., go out and find one and enjoy.

Nothing

Weakness:

This car has many weaknesses. I purchased this car in 1992 as a dealer demo with only 12,000 miles on it. It now has 44,000 miles. This car has been a constant headache for eight years. It has several major electical problems which no one can seem to solve. I have taken it to the shop many times but the same problems keep occuring: (1) the alarm system turns itself on for no reason at all, especially in the wee hours of the morning. (2) The car can only keep a charge for a few minutes before going completely dead, (3) the horn goes off all by itself and will not turn off until it drains the battery (4) the electrical door locks keep locking the car all by itself (I have been locked out of the car many times because of this).

I purchased this car in 1992 as a dealer demo with only 12,000 miles on it. I paid $22,000 dollars for the car although ii was worth only 22 cents! I look forward to the day when this pice of junk will run long enough for me to take it to the local dealer and sell it. I will never buy another Olds vehicle ever again. I would rather walk than drive an Olds. (I have nightmares of the many times that I have been stranded, many times in the early a.m). If you want a dependable vehicle, try an Acura or other Japanese made vehicles.

Strength:

Not much except for good off the line acceleration

Weakness:

engine stalls sporatically
car feels like it was built by fisher price
downshifts on the slightest of hills
car always pulls to left or right
The 2.8 V-6 doesent seem to have much power. I cant even imagine the 4 cylinder.
transfer case violently shatteres above 65 mph
the seat belt warning dings when the seat belt is on
interior rattles with every bump
Breaks down quite frequently
And much much more.......

I wouldent recommend this car to anyone. I am not saying GM is bad. I am just saying they are not for me. I think they are cheapely built, and unreliable. But obviously they have to be good because they wouldent be this big of a company. My aunt has a Chevrolet S-10 and the transmission went out at 19,000 miles. If you like klunkers then this car is for you!! Definetely no Crown Vic.

Strength:

Handles well and is very comfortable to drive.

Weakness:

It cost me two thousand dollars in repairs before I owned it 6 months.

I would highly reccomend NOT purchasing this type of Oldsmobile or any other for that matter. I purchased the car used and in pretty good condition, granted it did have high miles (90,000)I never imagined it would be this expensive to maintain. Within 45 days of signing my life away it started to *overheat* or at least that is what the control panel told me. First we put a new thermostat in, guess what..that worked for about a week. Next were some type of wires that the polarization had gone bad in and was causing it to read about 100 degrees hotter then what it was. All is well..for a month. Next it decides that it really doesn't want to turn off when it is put in park and the ignition is turned off and the keys are in my hand...I thought I was in the middle of Carrie the movie for a minute. So my car won't shut off, the reverse lights stay on and I think I'm going crazy. I'm really not sure what my security modular has to do with reverse lights and the engine not turning off, but that is what they said it was and I guess that is what got fixed. Now, two months later my car is BACK in the shop..and guess what it is doing now..overheating, yet again. The first call I get, ohhh, you are just out of anti freeze, you have no leaks, no problem..well, yeah there is a problem, I just put anti freeze in it last night..and I drove it maybe half a mile and it's gone??? Ohh, let us look again. Now there is something wrong with my air intake? I know I am a woman and I know they like to try and screw us over but come on...how can it go from being a simple polarization problem that cost 200 dollars four months ago to a intake valve issue costing almost 700 dollars. I feel for anyone that has had the unfortunate luck like I have had and purchased this P.O.S. I owned 4 Fords before I purchased this car..I had one for more than two years and I put close to 150,000 miles on it, besides the normal breaks, muffler, oil change upkeep I paid out maybe a total of 200 dollars to fix a fairly minor problem with the fuel line..I consider 200 dollar fairly minor over a three year span compared to 2,000 in a six month span!

WOW... I love my car. I have put over 60,000 miles on it in under 5 mo. and all that has been done is oil changes, gasing up, and new tires. It has never let me down even on my 100 mile commute M-F. My car has 162,000 miles on it....and I hope it'll go many more.

Weakness:

Kind of looks like its for an older person...but thats okay.

I would reccomend a 92' cutlass sl for anyone looking for cheaper mode of transportation... It's actually kind of fun to drive.

1997 Oldsmobile Cutlass Supreme SL.
Bought it new. Now 25,000 miles in 3 1/2 years. Leather interior. Power everything.
Bullet proof 3.1 V6.
An absolute pleasure to drive. Superior quality control. Nice fit and finish.
Extremely smooth and quiet. No windnoise or engine noise at all on the highway. Cruise control works very well.
No engine vibration at idle; it's difficult to tell if the engine is actually running at idle.
Very smooth shifting transmission. Almost imperceptible.
Speed sensitive steering. Nice feel.
Superior fuel economy: 35+ mpg (imperial) on the highway with A/C compressor on.
Auto climate control with dual zone works flawlessly. Excellent cooling from A/C. Interior cools down very quickly after sitting all day in hot summer sun.
AM/FM-tape-CD-6 speakers, awesome.
Large roomy trunk. Split rear backrest allows access to trunk. Nice.
Comfortable seatbelts. No twisting, ever.

Weakness:

This is picky perhaps, but the ride seems to be harsher on rough roads than I would have expected from a car of this calibre. It doesn't like bumps. I suspect this may be exacerbated by the low profile Goodyear Eagle tires with their very little sidewall flex. The upside of this, is that the car corners like its on rails! On a smooth road however, this vehicle is very quiet, and rides like absolute silk.

HIGHLY RECOMMENEDED!
This vehicle has been totally trouble free, mechanically and otherwise.
1997 was the last year for this vehicle before the Intrigue was introduced.
Congratulations Oldsmobile Division!

I have tested Buick Regals and Centurys, and found them to be equally as nice. The Buicks' ride over bumps did not exhibit the same harshness as this Cutlass. Perhaps Olds does this intentionally, and tunes the Olds ride for the more performance-conscious buyer.

Strength:

I bought this car off my dad 2 years ago (i was 16) and he made me pay half of what it was worth, $750. I guess I didn't realize what a great deal I got. Sure, it was an old car, but it never left me stranded or let me down. The sound system rocked, esp. considering it was 12 years old! The seats were so incredibly comfortable and I got comments on them all the time. The inteior was practically flawless. Why doesn't GM make cars like this anymore?? The leather steering wheel was one of my favorite features. Now everthing is made out of plastic, but the olds was pure quality. I am now attending a community college and decided I needed a better gas-mileage car. Last Friday my beautiful beast of a car was sold, and already I miss it dearly.

Weakness:

Hmmm, when I was younger and rode in the backseat I hated how I had to strain my neck to see out the window. The fact that it was a V-8 kinda used alot of my paycheck to pay for gas. RWD in the winter was a bit scary, although I always felt safe in that huge car. Slight oil leak, but hey, the car was old!

Would I recommend this? Well, definetly. If you're a kid lookin for a car to drive to High School and work, go for it. There are alot of them out there that have never seen a winter and have been babied.

Similar Products Used:

Nothing similar. We now have a Pontiac Transport, which is entirely made out of plastic, great reliable car, but can't compare to the classy olds. Also have a Pontiac Sunfire, sporty but feels like you're drivin a golf-cart. I miss the olds!

Strength:

The car is overall very solid. The 3.1 liter V6 has a decent launch and good midrage acceleration between 2800 and 4200 rpm. The materials inside the car are soft and have a nice touch for this price range. Good seating space for four and the spacious trunk is a plus.

Weakness:

Car has been plagued by a few problems all covered by warranty. This includes replaced rotors and pads, re-sealed windshield to stop a siren or howling sound at highway speeds, broken radio bass/treble knob, and poor retracting seatbelts. All problems were handled well by our dealership.

This was a good new car for $19,000. Yes, a Honda or Toyota will probably be a better car, but you will have to pay a premium. This car is only made in the Chevy Malibu variety now. If your looking for a well priced new car, then I would recommend the Cutlass/Malibu. If your looking for a used car, then it might be worth buying the Honda or Toyota.

Strength:

Good ride. Versitile. Good on gas This car drives and looks good. Quiet too!

Weakness:

Bad paint. Seat belt light comes on.

I like the Oldsmobile ride. I paid $ 700.00 plus $3,000.00 + on maintenance. The car is Cheap to run.(2.8L V6) Lots in the junkyard so parts are cheap. I replaced the engine and tranny at 365,000K because I got a good deal on used low milage units. It didn't burn oil and the tranny was shifting fine. Everything was getting old. This car is a junkyard parts car but I like it. I drive a LOT. I put major miles on my car 140,000K in two years. This is the longest I've held on to a used car. I don't mind spending money on it. We have a newer Mazda MPV but, my wife and I both prefer the old Olds SW. Everthing works including the A/C. There are five in the family + a dog and a cat. There are seats and belts for eight!!(8) I've had it full many times. This is the mid sized Ciera wagon. Ive been looking at a Nissan Maxima (the ride is nice like the Olds) I'll wait ten months and see how I feel then. I told the car sales man, "I don't want to comprimise when I buy a new car" I compare every car to my Olds. P.S. I sell Life insurance for a living.
