Strength:

brakes, engine, transmission reliability, body build, windshield display

Weakness:

seats too low, power windows/locks lighting, rare timing chain replacement is very expensive

Got lucky and found a used 1993 Altima that was a one owner with the silver extended warranty program. Basically meant the car was kept up well when I took the keys at 98,000 miles in July 2001. This was the first generation vechicle and despite some problems I can say I have had an enjoyable ownership experience. There are now 266,000 miles on the car and it's still going great. The driver's window went out a few months ago & most of the speakers are shot but the engine and transmission keep chugging along. Oh and the clock is the worst timepiece ever. The fun in this car is in the design & drive. It just moves well as long as you keep decent tires on it. Don't go the cheap route or they'll get chewed up in 3 months. The AC is great & the brakes are 1st class despite the typical Nissan squeal. The newer Nissans look nice but the first generation Altima's are just that kinda offbeat good that works.

Strength:

I can get mileage better than the official rating, but it is average.

Weakness:

Where to begin: the interior is crap, the back seat is torture, the front end is jim-crack, the front-wheel drive is shoddy in good conditions and useless in snow.

Well, it's a major disappointment. Design flaws abound, inside and out (e.g. the back window that actually collects snow, the creaky interior ride, the extra-loud rumble ride in the back seat). The plastic interior fittings are chintzy, the "made in Japan" junk of a generation ago. The front "bumper" is made of kiddie-toy plastic, even the block-heater plug damages it, and it is a 300+ part, it is a lightweight front-wheel drive that judders on every corner and quits on a snow uphill while guys in vans make it. The "powerful" engine is a "lie," it is sluggish at low revs, and loud -- compare the exquisite Camry. The radiator had to be replaced after two years (warranty) and the the sub-frame after 2.5 -- so the warranty is running out: what next? I've never had a car where I had to pay out of pocket 120 for a flawed fan belt after one year, or near 400 bucks for a 48,00 K check-over -- a real rip-off. I am looking for a sucker to dump this puppy on. Have that brother-in-law you don't like give me a call.

Strength:

Reliable and good gas mileage with quick response

Weakness:

Interior a little dull but can be spiffed up with inexpensive add ons.

I have been very satisfied with my Altima. Only had to take back to the dealer one time to have radiator replaced due to manufacture defect but no problems since. Interior was a little bland for me so I installed a dash kit and a new chrome shifter knob which made it look awesome. Seats are very comfortable with ample room in the back seat although you give up a little headroom with the sun roof. The 2.5 engine is very quick and I get 26-28mpg around town. The factory stereo is very good and has amazing sound. I highly recommend the Altima for reliablity and economy. After reading some of the other reviews, my Altima must not have been built on a Monday or Friday.

Strength:

Good interior room Nice sized trunk for a smaller car For a mid-range sedan, looks pretty stylish.

Weakness:

As above, with a special emphasis on the fact that I can't even get new wipers for the car without going to the dealer.

This car is probably not worth the money. At best it is very (very) pedestrian. At worst it is a cheaply made sedan that lacks the quality and precision that I had previously known Nissan for providing. It lacks the acceleration and speed of a 6 cylinder, and yet gets 6 cylinder gas mileage. It tends to wear out very easily. I have had the heater/AC blower replaced twice, a power window motor replaced, the struts replaced and am on my third (third!) set of new tires. While I have a lot of miles on it (about 60,000) for a 3.5 year old car, this is unacceptable. My biggest beef about this car is that nothing (and I mean nothing) is easy to fix/replace. The windshield wipers, fuses, and tires are all non-standard sizes. Don't even try anything more complex than that. This means that you have to get all of them from - yep, you guessed it - the dealer. Until very recently, only Continental made tires for this car, and if you have ever bought tires from this company, you know you might as well set your money on fire. Fortunately this has changed, as Goodyear now has made some reasonable tires for this car. Finally, little things seem to break all of the time. One day the glove box won't open right, the next the fuse to the power outlet is burned out (again), and the next day the gas door won't open or shut. I keep having all of this stuff checked - including the electrical system several times - and the dealer can't/won't tell me what's wrong. Add to all of this that my "Check Engine" light is almost always on - and you have a pretty frustrating driving experience.

Strength:

Reliable, roomy, had to fix the brakes once (about a month after I purchased the vehicle, don't know what the person before me did to it) other than that, i've only done routine oil changes.

Weakness:

Horn...but who cares

I have had my car for a year and a half now and I have not had any problems with it. I was 18 when I bought it, and me and my Dad searched and searched the auto trader to find something reliable and safe for me, and I feel that I got that with the Altima. The only problem I have with this car, is that...well....I am a 20 year old girl and I'm clearly driving a family car. It's a great car, but just not suited for me and my personality. But I would like to note, as a family car, it is fantastic. It has a really roomy backseat, as well as a spacious trunk. When driving two hours with four other friends we ALWAYS take my car, because we know that there is room for three adults to sit in the backseat, as well as enough room to put all of our overpacked suitcases in the trunk. I do wish that I had gone with something a little sportier and a little more younger looking, but hey that's my own decision. Also, I am 5'4 and when driving it I feel like I am so low, but my guess is that the person who owned it before me might have been heavily overweight and crushed it down, because I feel higher when sitting on the passenger's side. It's good with Winter driving....In Canada that is important. I read a review on here where someone complained about the horn...and I would have to complain about that also... You can hardly hear it! You know when someone totally cuts you off...and you get mad...and you want to blast them with your horn??? Ain't gonna get that great "EFF YOU!" effect with this car! But all in all, great family vehicle that is totally reliable.

Horrible Build Quality No Customer Satisfaction from Nissan Canada Engine Struts Exhaust Brakes

Knock in engine started at 10,000 km. complained several times...was told it was normal. Strange water rushing sound in the dash. Took several trips to the garage to figure it out...they did but now it's back again. Rides like a train - Struts were gone at 30,000 km. Dealer says they are ok. Anyone who has ever been in the car can attest to it banging hard running over even small bumps. I've been in sub-compacts that ride much much better. Total Brake failure without warning at less than 35,000 km. Cost me $1000 to repair. Yes, $1K 4 Tires replace at 35,000 km. They installed wrong size and winter tires at that at the end of May. Took another month to get all season and they were wrong size too. It still does not have original size tires. Dealer said they couldn't get them. Doors began squeaking within weeks of getting it. And still are, despite having them greased each visit to the garage. Door seal replaced twice. Right door buzzer/light switch fell off. Right front door glass has wind noise. Had it in several times and still not fixed - I gave up on it. The last time they were at it they must have forgot to tighten up the bolts. One fell off inside the door and now the doors clangs when you close it. They couldn't see anything wrong with it two weeks ago when I was there. Once you push the latch to engage the Child locks they may or may not disengage and you have to open the door from the outside. The door latches freeze on cold winter mornings and won't shut. You have to wait until the car warms up. Happened 3 times this past winter - very damn frustrating! Two recalls - one for an exhaust hanger and the other for a screen in the gas filler tube. Steering seized up and had to have the steering knuckle replaced. Dealer wanted me to pay for the wheel alignment. Engine died and was replaced at 61,000 kms. (2weeks ago) Vibration through entire car is back. Last time it was because they hung the exhaust off the body of the car. Transmission appears to be slipping lately. What else can I say...The Nissan Altima is a LEMON. Worst car I've ever had.

Strength:

-Accelleration -Braking -Bose Radio -Comfort

Weakness:

-Gas Mileage , (19mpg) but its mainly because i have CAI...and at gas prices of $2.50, that thing may be coming off. -Turning circle -Handling, not up to Honda's stats -No ABS or TCS on I-4

Overall, the my 2.5 SL Altima, is a good car, even it not being a performance car (obviously) it does handle its turf fairly well, excellent braking, excellen accelleration, ok handling, the biggest flaws of this car are its reliability, my car went back to nissan several times, for a starting distibutor, window motor failure, mass air sensor, other things i took care of, like a faulty blown speaker, the armrest breaking twice, the cupholders breaking, and still to this day i havent fixed by power seat failure where the 7th n 8th switch do not work. This car has the worst turning cirlce of any car i have ever come across, i personally think that a Lincoln Town car, could pull a U- Turn better than this car. In the cold early mornings, where temps are around 20s, the transmission seams to jolt a little bit in the 1st n 2nd gears (automatic) on a gentle acceleration the RPMS will climb up to 4000-4500 without shifting, and give a jolt into 2nd..The car has excellent looks, and excellent comfort, the seats give decent support, and the backseat is very spacious. The 8 speaker bose radio is great, when CD's are amplified before they are made, you can pump out every last watt you could from the Bose radio and it never seems to distort even had it highest volume. The two somewhat, "subwoofers" that are relly 6x9's that only produce bass rear mounted gives off a thunderous amount of bass for the rear passengers, Headlights are decent, and so is visibility, The Contiental Touring Tires SUCK!!!!!! They are terrible with grip, terrible in snow, terrible on treadware, and terrible in emergency driving. i cant believe they put this tire on a Benz S500. I hate them, and they are too undersized.

Comfort, paint, trunk latch, car sounds hollow

I really just do not like this car. I ahve been unhappy ever since I purchased it ( partially my fault though). It is not comfortable for someone who is tall, I'm 5'10". The gas mileage is only ok, the overal comfort isn't great. It had ghost marks int he paint and the dealership scheduled a time for me to come in to get them fixed but when I arrived, they said it would be a 3 hour wait. Not what I was told when the appointment was scheduled. When I try to accelorate, it is delayed. I have had a 4 cylinder like this before, but have never experienced this The compartment to the left of the wheel comes undone very easily and the cup holders are small. I do like the sunglasses compartment. No rear seat pockets, of hangers to hang dry cleaning, other than the handles. Trunk remote latch catches so I have to open with the key. Either many people decided they want to hit my car with their doors or the paint is just very sensitive. I ahve never had so many dings in a year's time. But,I personlly just do not like this car. I am not comfortable in it and it is just puny. I really miss my Hondas! What was I thinking?

Strength:

- Initial price was affordable with model available with options desired.

Weakness:

- Engine exhaust manifold cracked just out of warratee - took a long time to get parts. - Repeated minor repairs on exhaust as brackets have all rusted off (resulting in joint cracks in pipes). - Engine oil pan gone after only 130,000km, numerous engine oil leaks. - Disc brakes seem to wear out rapidly. - Sport suspension poor - very bouncy/jiggly in response to road and engine power changes. - Nozzles on windshield wipers failed after only 40,000km! - Unsavoury dealer sales tactics when purchased.

Although not quite a lemon, the Altima has been a disapointing purchase. It has had higher than normal repairs, and my overall satisfaction driving the product is poor. (note: price indicated is CDN)
