Strength:

Sharp-looking, good-handling and relatively quiet with a powerful engine and a responsive, computer-controlled transmission.

Weakness:

Air-conditioning is inadequate - interior cooling is poor and very slow. Buyers living in Florida or the desert Southwest beware! Front brake rotors have been serviced four times in 20,000 miles (common complaint). A summer 2000 Technical Service Bulletin (TSB) called for special machining of the rotors, special pads, and new lower control arms. Early-model 1999 Galants all shipped with defective, low-strength plastic interior door handles that break easily. Sightline at top of windshield is low for drivers over six-feet.

3.0-liter V-6 engine is excellent (the 4-cylinder model is nice for a four too). Overall quality is inferior to rival products from Honda and Toyota but the styling is sharper and the price slightly cheaper.

Strength:

The Galant is Awesome. I'm in college and bought it two years ago. Now I am away at school and it always gets me home safe and sound. My family takes it on long trips because it's reliable, incredibly comfortable, quiet and gets good gas mileage. I hope my Galant keeps going for years to come, I can't imagine parting with it ever!

Weakness:

Very few problems. In fact- none that I didn't inflict except the air conditioner button burnt out. It's been a great car.

I think I may have paid a little too much, but the dealership I bought it from is notorious for ripping people off. It leaks oil now and the tires suck, but that's because Firestone is a big old rip off and they damaged my oil pan. I would recommend this car to anyone in a second. It's a great machine and anyone would love it! I'm a 21 year old college student, and I've added striping and a spoiler to my Galant and it looks just as cool as any sports car on the road- with one difference- I can fit all my friends in it comfortably! The interrior is solid and the ride is smooth. It's just an all around great car for people of all ages and backgrounds.

Strength:

fast acceleration, runs really good for having over 100,000 miles on it.

Weakness:

None of the windows will roll up or down, since i have had it(almost a year) it has had to be realigned twice, and when i brake the whole car shakes. When i took it to a shop to have the brakes repaired i was told they were fine. The muffler started to rattle too but a little tape fixed that.

My husband was the one who actually purchased the car and he paid 10500 for it, the blue book value is only around 4000. we havent had any serious problems with the car and i dont see it dying on us any time soon. i would recomend it but not for the price i payed and i would more than likely recomend buying a new galant as opposed to a 94

the only other car i have driven is a 87 ford tempo with a laundry list of problems so i must say the galant is like 100 times better.

Strength:

Strong Engine, seems to have more torque than either Honda's or Toyota's V-6. While 0-60 time is supposed to be about a second slower than a V-6 Honda, it feels faster than the Accord. Every option you could possibly need on the car.
Handling - this car is fantastic. I test drove just about every 2 and 4 door sport sedan/coupe in the 20,000 to 30,000 dollar range and almost nothing comes close. The new Maxima SE's handle well, but the ride gets a little punishing with the 17 inch rims. The Acura 3.2Cl-S handled a little better, but that car is about 33,000. The Subaru Legacy GT's handled great as well, but lacked the power of the Galant. One big difference between the GTZ and the Accord was the sense of safety and stability you feel in the GTZ. Accords have a tendency to float over bumpy turns and have much more body roll than the GTZ.

Weakness:

Says it needs premium fuel (as all V-6 galants do), No "oh S#@t" bars for the passengers. Lack of storage space. Not too many color choices.

$23,500 including sunroof visor and mudgards and window etching. Many dealers say that they are selling these cars for sticker. That's bull, but they are tough to find.
Overall, I love the car. Drives as smooth as a Camry, has a peppy V-6, handles better than an Accord or Maxima SE, and you can get .9 or 1.9 percent financing on one. I am only paying 410/month for the car with only 2,000 down. Definitely check the car out, especially, if you want a practical, comfortable vehicle that you can have a lot of fun with every now and then.

Strength:

Great road car! Seats as good as any I've ever known. Very quick acceleration, AWD, 4 wheel steering, 4 wheel anti-lock brakes, a sense of exclusivity because you won't see many on the road. 5 star reliability and durability, never had a significant problem with it.

Weakness:

The manual transmission is a bit clunky, as compared to some other Japanese cars I've had. The trunk is smallish.

I paid $22k + change when it was new, and drove it (hard) 3 years. A really great car, that I still miss.

Model Reviewed: Galant GTZ

Strength:

acceleration, brakes, styling, features per dollar

Weakness:

torquey at hard takeoffs, transmission shifts in and out of overdrive too much at times, no lumbar support on seats (added in 2000); chrome on windows only at bottom of window not all the way around (looks odd), lacks rear armrest, faux wood doesn't match this cars sporty nature

I traded my 96 Galant in for a GTZ because I wanted an automatic and a V6. I was impressed by the reliability of my previous car. A great, fast car for a V6. Handles well. I bought it and then my wife took it from me (imagine that). Nice alloy wheels and styling throughout, although I don't personally care for the white faced gauges, and I think the spoiler's a little exaggerated. Other than that, I love it. I feel like I'm going to come out of the seat on turns, I wish it had lumbar support or better bolsters (maybe I'm just taking the turns too fast). This car is quick but thirsty on fuel (my V8 T-Bird gets better mpg). No problems with it except a problem with the ignition (lots of accessories wouldn't come on), which the dealer quickly fixed. The Infinity sound system is great and powerful (7 speakers), and is CD changer ready. Nice driver power seat with power recliner, and the leather upholstery is pretty good, cleans up well. Dislike that only the seat faces are leather and the back is hard plastic (has side airbags), although it does prevent feeling knees from the passenger behind you. Came with heated mirrors (first experience with them) - so convenient when they're fogged up. I get compliments all the time on it from people I don't know. Limited color choices - but black is great - requires constant washing but it's worth it. If I trade this car, I'll buy another one or a Diamante.

Service (routine maintenance) is not overly expensive either, which is a plus.

The car is great except I'd like a few more gadgets and toys, like automatic climate control, heated seats, etc. Hope Mitsubishi could give us Diamante equipment in the Galant. The back isn't quite roomy enough for adults to be comfortable for a long ride - particularly if the front seat occupants are average - tall in height and have to put the seat back. But its fine for occassional transporting or primarily two passengers and the dog (like us). In terms of performance and reliability its tops, and a true value. The dealer charged me less than retail. I also enjoy driving a vehicle which there are few of on the road. See a lot of Galants, but very few GTZs. I'd recommend this car to anyone looking for a quick, sporty sedan under $25k.

Better styling/performance than previous Galant I had (1996 S) - great reliability on that car as well - no problems except had to replace battery at 40k. Other than routine maitenance, it ran well

Strength:

has luxury feel, very fast when it needs to be, all wheel drive, all wheel steering, independant suspension, turbocharged, handles very well for a four door car, sleeper, can smoke many sports cars with ease, leather, cd and tape player, very nice looking

Weakness:

turbo lag is a small problem and first gear should be a little quicker other than that it's great

I got the car for a great price which was way below blue book in cherry shape, I would definitely recommend this car to anyone who likes to have a nice, rare car that likes to go fast on occasion. It has a great ride but I wouldn't recommend it to people that are too old because that would just ruin the point of having all of the high performance accesories. A very reliable car if you take care of it. I would definitely give this car two thumbs up

Model Reviewed: Galant ES

Strength:

- peppy engine
- reliability
- very effective a/c in very hot climate
- soaks up bumpy crumpled pavement very nicely
- very good value for the money. Lots of standard equipment; didn't have to pay extra for all the goodies I consider neccessary: cruise, a/c, pw/pl/pmirrors, folding rear seat, variable wipers

Weakness:

- gas mileage is so-so for a 4-cyl (20 mpg city/30 hwy)
- braking is average/emergency handling is sloppy
- automatic transmission downshifts harshly during low speed to hard acceleration transition (when the transmission drops from 2nd to 1st gear); otherwise transmission shifts smoothly.

I've owned this car for almost 3 years/35k miles now and I am very satisfied. The car has held up very well in all regards, and has only required basic maintenance. Paint/interior is still brand new looking (wax 2x/yr). I bought the car brand new at the end of the model year, and got a $2k Mitsu rebate on top of a $2k dealer discount. That put the cost of the car a good $4k below what a comparably equipped Accord or Camry would have set me back. Although the car is a notch below those two in most aspects, I didn't and still don't think it's worth paying the premium. Plenty of space for my family of four.
