Strength:

head turning outside appearance, value for the money, japanese make (which can be loosely translated to an at least average reliability), some sense of exclusivity - not as wildly popular as the accord or camry, smooth-powerful-quiet V6, excellent brakes (consumer reports), standard 4 wheel disc with ABS, modest body lean during spirited cornering. oh and did i mention a smooth shifting automatic transmission?

Weakness:

cramped rear leg room, fuel filler door not lockable, lack of grab handles inside (atop each window), lack of rear seat armrest.

i have the 2001 ES-V6 in sterling silver. still offers a visual treat even after two months of ownership. upgraded to custom wheels but retained the original tires (goodyear eagle LS). steering feel improved and so did response to input (quicker now). upgraded the speakers as the factory radio/speakers sounded like it was wanting for more. sometimes i think i should have opted for the premium package so i wouldn't have to go through the trouble of replacing the audio system. (premium package boasts of an infinity sound system with 7 speakers and as mitsubishi claims, 210 watt amplifier). i am now looking at after market in dash cd systems.
overall, i am very satisfied with my galant.
it's a very good alternative to the extremely popular and stiffly priced accord or camry. and my experience with VW wasn't at all pleasant.
if you're in the market for a safe (crash test results are available at the various websites), reliable (consumer reports survey and several other mitsubishi owners), affordable 4 door sedan, seriously consider the Galant.
the good looks, strong yet quiet V6 engine, silky smooth shifting intelligent automatic transmission, and a great price are all bonuses when you finally decide to get one.

Similar Products Used:

volkswagen passat gls 1.8T - more refined ride overall, with excellent road feel compared to the galant. i have had the (dis)pleasure of owning one and i traded it in for this galant because just about everything electrical broke.
honda accord V6 - able to handle road irregularities better than the galant but has noisier interior.
toyota camry - overall feeling of smoothness and refinement, better than the galant, but ride is "floaty" and has tendency to "bottom out" at potholes and brushes undercarriage against humps when rear seat is occupied.
nissan altima- feels "coarse" compared to all others in this section.

Strength:

the premium 16' in. alloy wheels(probably the last owner changed to them)

Weakness:

the gas pedal's too tight, hard to use
the brakes are weak
the engine's way too noisy
interior rattles coming from everywhere
the cup holders just got stuck
the deck's color's turning from black to purple !!??
very poor gas mileage (around 14)

i bought this car at the end of May, 2000. it was like new when i bought it, but the problems started coming out the 3rd day after i bought it. this car is very very NOT reliable, i already spent close to $2000 on repairs. the problems are coming faster than the repairs are going on.
i would not recommend any Mitsubishi cars to anyone. because of the very low built quality. even the new cars are the same.

Model Reviewed: Galant ES

Strength:

I like the power of the engine, items included in the standard package and the way the car is designed. Specifically the low front end and the curved contours of the four "ends".

Weakness:

The price of gas and my need for speed and travel. The brakes get squeaky in the dusty summer heat. The interior DOES resemble coffin material but fortunately my windows are tinted.

I would recommend this car because you definitely get your money's worth. I went into the Nissan dealership with firm plans to leave with nothing less than a Maxima. The dealer told me I needed to crawl before I learned to walk because the Maxima's price was so much. So four hours later with day turning to dusk I "down-graded" to a used Galant. Now this was the middle of the hot summer in the Las Vegas heat and my prior car had no A/C. At this point I was ready to leave with a yugo with upgraded air-conditioning. I told the salesman that my goal was to purchase a V-6 because I wanted more power in my trips to California and I had never owned one. Honestly, I wasn't sure what one was but I knew it was faster and steadier than a four cylinder. He showed me the Galant, now this was at about 8p.m. Tired and wore down I was frantic because I was unprepared to purchase the galant because I had not done my homework on this vehicle.Dumb and delirious I signed on the dotted line. I drove this unfamiliar vehicle home in the darkness of night. The next day when I went to inspect my purchase I was pleased. I had a Kapilana black model with dark tinted windows to match. It had 15inch custom rims with high profile tires. It had all of the options including cassette/cd player and changer. Plus the standard package of sun/moonroof, alarm, dual airbags, overdrive and AC. I later learned that a 16valve is like a four cylinder on crack. So I am still pleased that I have more power than I was used to. It took me a while to figure out how to get the maximum efficiency out of the AC system but once I did, the AC was also powerful. So I guess I'm really lucky. The only gripe that I do have is that the automatic antenna is broken and won't go down. I guess I was getting the car washed too often and something in the mechanism rusted. I went to the dealer and they quoted me $100+ dollars for a new antenna. Oh well....I am still pleased and am able to find my car in the mall.

Model Reviewed: MITSUBISHI GALANT LS V6

Strength:

IT HAS AWESOME AGGRESSIVE LOOKS. MANY PEOPLE MISTAKE IT FOR A BMW AND THINK IT IS VERY EXPENSIVE CAR. IT HAS A STRONG AND VERY SMOOTH ENGINE. I LOVE DRIVING THIS CAR IT HANDLES VERY WELL ESPECALLY SINCE I HAVE UPGRADED THE CARS WHEELS & TIRES. WITH THE HELP OF PERFORMANE ORIENTED LOW PROFILE TIRES OF 17 INCHES 225/45 SERIES TIRES. WITH THE HELP OF THESE TIRES THE CAR STICKS TO ROAD LIKE GLUE. OVER ALL MY CAR DRAWS MANY LOOKS OF ADMIRATION FROM PEOPLE WHERE EVER I TAKE. I DROVE CAMRY AND ACCORD AND BOTH OF THEM LOOK VERY PLAIN AND LESS ATTRACTIVE THAN MY GALANT AND FAILED TO IMPRESS ME. I JUST WISH THAT MITSUBISHI ON NEXT UPDATE GIVE US THE REAL AWESOME JAPANESE VERSION OF 280 HORSE POWER TURBO CHARGED GALANT VR4 ALL WHEEL DRIVE. I WOULD BE THE FIRST ONE IN LINE TO BUY ONE.

Weakness:

THE CAR SHOULD COME STANDARD ON V6 VERSIONS WITH THE HIGH PERFORMANCE TIRES LIKE I HAVE PUT ON MINE BECAUSE IT WILL MAKE THIS CARS HANDLING ON PAR WITH BMW M3 THIS IS NOT SOME THING IAM MAKING UP IT WAS VERIFED BY CAR & DRIVER ON THEIR LONG TERM GALANT V6 UPDATE THE CAR WITH MORE AGRESSIVE PERFROMANCE TIRES HAD MUCH IMPROVED HANDLING OF 86g COMPARED TO STOCK 79g. SOME OF MY OTHER COMPLAINTS ARE THAT THE TRANSMISSION SHOULD HAVE HAD SLIGHTLY MORE AGRESSIVE GEAR RATIOS SO IT COULD HAVE BETTER 0-60 TIMES COMPLEMENTING IT'S MORE POWERFULL V6 ENGINE OF 195 HP & 205 TORQUE RATINGS. ONE MORE THING IS THAT IT SHOULD BE MORE SMOOTH ON COLD MORNING START UPS. ALSO WOULD NOT MIND A LITTLE MORE ROOM FOR THE BACK SEAT PASSENGERS AND LESS TIRE NOISE WILL BE A GREAT IMPROVEMENT ON AN ALREADY EXCELENT CAR. I WOULD LIKE TO SEE THE INSTRUMENT PANEL MADE MORE ATTRACTIVE.

YES I WOULD RECOMMEND THIS NEW VERSION OF MITSUBISHI GALANT V6 TO EVERY BODY. I THINK THIS CAR WAS MADE FOR PEOPLE WHO WANT AWESOME LOOKS AND REFINEMENT FOR REASONABLE PRICE AND WHO HAVE PASSION FOR THEIR CARS. IF YOU LACK PASSION FOR YOUR CAR THEN THIS CAR IS NOT FOR YOU GO AND BUY ONE ON OF THOSE PLAIN AND UNATTRACTIVE TOYOTA CAMRY OR HOND ACCORD.

LIKE I SAID IT IS BETTER THAN BOTH HONDA ACCORD OR TOYOTA CAMRY WHICH BOTH ARE PLAIN AND UNATTRACTIVE COMPARED TO THE NEW MITSUBISHI GALANT.

Strong 4cyl, I compared both the 4 and 6 cyl models, no major difference in performance!

Weakness:

1. Lack of available 5 speed.

I have owned my Mitsu for about a year now, no problems to report. However, I do get a small vibration once past 80mph. Other than that, its seems to be a solid car! I would recommend test driving one before laying out the cash on a Honda or Toyota, you may be surprised!

Strength:

Acceleration, good cruise control and new look.

To fit everything I need to say...I will start the BAD comments here.
Problems since I got my Mitsubishi Galant ES 99 model last summer 98.

1. The whole transmission was replaced 2 weeks later I got the car due to irreparable leak.
2. Clicking noise coming from the passenger door - checked 4 times, still cannot repair it.

Weakness:

3. Front left door handle cracked/broke and replaced. Rear left door handle broke yesterday.
4. Grinding noise coming all the tires - defective Goodyear LS tires according to Mitsubishi. Had to replace them last week.
5. Squeaking coming from the glove compartment - checked 4 times, still cannot repair it.

In short, I won't recommend this car to anyone.
Email if you encountered any of this problems. Mitsubishi has been accused of hiding reports about the defects of this car.

Strength:

This car has been very reliable for me. Especially with its age and mileage. It has good acceleration for a four cylinder and handles well under normal conditions. It's very much in touch with the road. Braking is confident. Nice interior and good gas mileage.

Weakness:

Steering wheel has tendencies to vibrate. The vents easily break and are difficult to manipulate. Slight vibration in dash when speeds are over 75 miles an hour. Hard to find dealerships or shops that can easily work on it.

At the price I paid for this car, it was a real steal. I find it enjoyable to drive as well as economical and reliable. I also like the styling, which gives drivers who want to stand out among all the Camrys and Accords a solid vehicle to buy.

This has a good sound system, all the controls are in reach of the steering wheel, large trunk space.

Weakness:

I have had this car for less than 2 years and the transmission is gone. I have experienced problems wuth the steering column shaking while braking at higher speeds. The brakes always have to be looked at. I am extremely disappointed with this purchase. I have to pay $2500 for a new transmission on a car that is less than 3 years old! This is a lemon and I am not happy with this purchase. I had a '94 Ford Taurus, I should have kept it. I have owned many cars and this is the worst car purchase that I have ever made, do not buy this car! It is a money pit!!!

DON'T BUT THIS CAR!!! You will have real money problems!!!

Strength:

I got the car in 2000 with 21k miles on it. Great acceleration and pick up for the 2.4 4 cylinder engine. Interior is comfortable if you enjoy your leather tight and firm which i do. Actually has more interior styling, comfort, and room than the '99's +. I prefer the body styling with its rounded curves compared to the new body style released in 99. Great factory sound system. Controls are all placed well so the driver doesnt have to take his eyes off the road. Full fold down rear seat.

Weakness:

The only one problem that I feel that the car has is its transmission. It has a hard down shifting between second and first. Handling is decent for this car since its not as wide as the Diamante. They could have made a model with a sport suspension and wider/large tires. The sunroof isnt the greatest but fine if you want it. After a while it seems to get loose and you can hear it creeking over bumps since they arent installed at the factory. Also, the sunroof is extreemly slow. I start closing it at the beginning of my block so it would be closed by the time i pull in my driveway. Could have come with an ABS option.

I would definitly reccomend the car if you were in the under 20k price range. Nice comfort and styling.
