Strength:

This is a gorgeous car and you don't see them everywhere like the Camry and Accord. Great price.

Weakness:

Bad breaks! I knew I should have listened to all of the reviews that I read about Galants with warped rotors. Been to the shop 3 times in 2 months. Steering wheel vibrates excessively. The car eats up gas. Heard some vibration in the dashboard. Keyless entry works when it wants too. And lets not forget all those recalls.

Do not buy a car based on looks like I did. And don't think that your Galant will be any different from everyone else. Sometimes it is better to pay more for quality. Mitsubishi also has very poor service.

90 Toyota Corolla. Best car ever made. It never broke down and never needed repairs. Darn I miss that car. Nothing like a Toyota! What was I thinking getting a Mitsubishi with such a poor reputation.

Looks.....I love the way it looks in the front with all of the lights on! It looks mean and can kick your ass. Looks like a BMW from behind. Eye catching too!

Weakness:

Slow transmission when u floor it...but after a second, watch out and hold on.

I love this car, great in ever angle.

Strength:

Power and Exterior style (gives the power of a weak V6 in a 4 banger)

Weakness:

Consumes oil (Apparently this is normal for aluminum engines)

My VW was a peice of crap compared to the success I've had with the Galant. The Power is great, the handeling is good and the paint is good aas well (my car is black). This 4 cyl has more power then the prestigious 91' Passaat. The assembally of the engine seems more solid. (the passat had a lot of plastic) The biggest surprise is that it consumes oil.... apprently this is a normal process of cooling system (just seems weird) The tranny and engine seem to form a symphony of performance road travel. The interior material looks like granny's 'ole wallpaper... What can you say about the material when the car costs a good 3K - 5K less then the Accord and Camry. This is a pretty good car but the fit and finish will get the Mitsu Motors company everytime when compared to their legendary Japanese brothers.

Strength:

Unbelievable amout of power for a sedan. Strong and smooth at high speed. Better yet, it runs on regular gas and still produce too much power. Good supporing driver seat (fixed my back problem). With AWD and ABS, I have peace in mind on any road surface. Great car designed for rally spirit. Typical Japanese sports car I love.

Weakness:

Small trunk with uneven bottom. Wind noise is too obvious at high speed. Low RPM accelaration is slow and noisy (1st gear). Takes a lot of involvement in driving: having to warm up before putting too much pressure on the turbo and to cool down before shutting engine off. Some annoying noise comes up from time to time. One known rattling is the catalytic convertor, another unsure whistling nosie might come from the fuel pump at light throttle.

After all, it is copied from a rally car and it serves as one too. Great balance between performance and every day driving. If a new Galant VR4 model were avaliable at the dealer I would have not hesitated getting one. However, selling only 3000 in US before discontinuation must have meant that Mitsubishi is not confident to use this model to compete on the market. Put the new GVR4 back in US and give Audi Quattro a good run.

Similar Products Used:

Honda Accord LX 4-cyl: easier to drive, great handling, but can't compare to vr4 when driving in snow. Comfortable but non-supporting driver seat which could cause back problems.
Toyota Camry LE 4-cyl: much smoother and quiter, so is its performance. No reserve power at high speed.

Model Reviewed: ES V6

Strength:

It has a lot of power and good acceleration in both 4 and 6 cylindar models. It handles very good, and it has very good back support for you people with bad backs. I like the rear heating/air underneath the front seats, it makes your rear passengers more comfortable in hot/cold weather. The interior is very nice and rich looking with the wood grain dash. It has one touch open sliding sunroof, and very good stereo for being factory. Very dependable car!!!

Weakness:

The only problem I've had is the seal on passenger's side door started to come off, because it got frozen to the car door-jam in the freezing winter with lots of snow and ice.

I would recommend buying a Galant to anyone, whether it be a teenager, middle-aged family, or an elderly person. I myself am 17 and all of my friends love my car, and in fact one of my classmates just recently bought one. It handles really well, and and is well priced for a mid-sized car with all the options it comes with. Over all the Galant is a perfect car for anyone, so go and buy one. You'll be glad you did.

Toyota Camry doesn't compare. The seats have very bad back support and aren't as quick. The Galant Looks much nicer and tougher for a lot cheaper.

Uhmmmm...I'm thinking.....The sunroof is slow.

In my last post I commented that my antena had busted. To my surprise, it just started working all by itself about a month ago. Ya see procrastination can pay off.

I've put on 17,000 miles since my last post.

Strength:

Good ride, lots of 'gadgets', sporty handling, great styling, good grip

Weakness:

First, the car started burning oil, like most Mitsu cars I've seen. Was told its the engine seals (never got fixed due to next problem).

Then, the shifter started getting vague, then finally wouldn't go into 2nd gear at all. Diagnosed as a bad main tranny bearing (5 speed). Car was rendered undriveable after that.

Now, for the normal problems...the engine is a 2.0L 16v which loves to run at higher rpm's. The tranny gearing does not allow this, and has VERY tall gearing, more suited for a large V-6. Translation? Slow. 0-60 in 11 seconds. This doesn't help gas mileage much either, especially in an AWD car. The ABS didn't work consistently, possibly not the car's fault.

Oh, and the whine of the engine. Sort of a 'rrrrrrrr', not really typical of a piston engine.

Overall, this car suprised me. Way back when, it was rated as a 'best buy' by Consumer Reports. It has all the promise of a performance machine. ABS, 4 disks, AWD, 16v...but these are only stats, not performance facts. Mitsu spent WAY too much effort in the gadgets, and not enough on the mechanical quality (typical early Japanese). I'm willing to bet the VR-4 model will kick some serious butt, but those are exquisitely rare and are still plagued by the same problems.

transmission blew with only 66,000 miles on the car. As I am calling around to price out a tranny the dealers are well aware that the trannys are a big problem but as of yet there is no recall. There should be a recall!!!!

overall the car handled well till problems started with the tire area and the ball joint recall. now i am stuck with a car on a loan it will cost me about $2500 to fix the transmission and the bb value on the car is $5000. You tell me.

Model Reviewed: Galant ES 5-spd

Strength:

A 2.4 liter 4-cyl, chock full of amenities, unique styling, smooth cruising, linear sterring, decent handling, cavernous trunk

Weakness:

A 2.4 liter 4-cyl, nappy gray upholstery, tall squeally tires, cheap moonroof, dissapointing stereo

A bargain at just over $10K, I fell in love with it on the test drive. However, had I had just taken a longer stint with it, I would have avoided buying this piece of crap.
For a Japanese car, I expected something better!
I love and hate the 4-cyl engine. Why? Because there is virtually no low-end torque - all the power is in the top end! But when you get there, the power is sweet. This is definitely a highway traveler that easily tops 120 MPH. The tires and wheels are ugly but all in all it hadles remarkably well (just feels a tad heavy).
The manual transmission had a grinding noise the first day I bought it, and gears 1-4 need to be shorter and spaced closer together. The 5th gear is a little short for my taste as well (lending itself to poor fuel economy). I would have designed it differently.
The sunroof was obviously an outsourced job (NOT done by Mitsubishi), and the stereo sounds boomy and underpowered. There was also a rare seal leak in the rear windshield that caused a pool of water to gather in the trunk and on the diver side. It was fixed under warranty, but that didn't give me a good feeling.
I am looking into upgrading everything - the wheels, tires, stereo, suspension, and maybe even a supercharger.

Avoid this car if you want to keep you hands out of your pocket to reach for your credit card. I have a feeling I haven't seen the end of this car's problems. Even the 94 Hyundai Scoupe I bought years back didn't have these fundamental design flaws!

I shoulda listened to my wife. She believes only in German cars. I beginng to see why.
