Strength:

None that I can think of.

Weakness:

EVERYTHING!!!! Won''t start, massive vibration, rattling in the dash as well as in the back somewhere, passenger side window is very slow going up, door handles suck when you pull them up, weatherproofing is horrible (rain leaks in), hard downshifting.....do I really need to go on????? DO NOT BUY A COUGAR!!!!!!

I just got this piece of crap car in January 2001, and it has been in the shop for most of that time. Thank GOD for extended warranties! I would be screwed without it. I hate this car and would not recommend it to anyone. I can''t wait until I''ve had it long enough that I can trade it in without putting myself too much in the hole. Twice is hasn''t started. Won''t even crank. Then when I had it towed to the shop, it started right up. Massive vibration which is unbelievably annoying. I take it to the shop and they tell me there''s nothing wrong. That it rides perfectly. Where does Ford find these people????? The compressor for the air conditioning had to be replaced, along with the ignition lock (which took 2 weeks). I''m ready to just push the car off a bridge. And that front cup holder SUCKS!!!!!!

Strength:

Stylish, handles nice.

Weakness:

That dang cup holder in the front!! You can most certainly count on whatever you have in there spilling on your lap when your make a sharp turn. I''ve complained to Lincoln Mercury about this and they just replaced it with a new one, though I still experience the same problems. This is something that I believe to be very dangerous! I on two occasions have had to deal with HOT coffee on my lap while trying to keep control of the car! Also the back seats are very uncomfortable and it''s a bit noisy on the inside. The moonroof sucks because it doesn''t really open all the way and doesn''t look as good or work as well as a sunroof.

Great looking car! I told the Dealer what I wanted (black, manual transmission, sport package.. the works) and he had it for me the following week. Though I did notice that when I picked it up from the dealer there was some white stuff on the driver side of the car that apparently someone tried to clean up with a buffer but in the process left streaks. I had mine slightly tinted and all black, I''ve gotten rave reviews from people that I''ve come across. The only major problems that I''ve encounter was the front cup holder and my moonroof wouldn’t close after a while (which they replaced under warranty). As far as maintenance I have had no problems in that area though I sometimes wonder if they really do what they say they''ve done, it always rides the same when I leave. One time, the said that they rotated the tires but I could tell that they didn''t.

Strength:

Good handling, looks and power

Weakness:

Airbag light came on occasionally. Ford dealer could not diagnose problem. I tracked it down to be the rotary connection switch (clock spring) connecting the control unit up to the driver''s airbag - now solved Brakes a little harsh and remote only works in warm weather! Which is not often in the UK. Black paintwork seems to damage very easily.

Paid £8000 in the UK with 25k miles on the clock. Sold under the ford badge in the UK Lot of car for the money when compared to my previous BMW 328i. Seems to attract unwanted attention - i.e. police. Steering and gears seem to be a little heavy even for a sports car - compared with my previous cars and my wives Audi A4

Fun Drive

Weakness:

Electric, Truck system, unreliable!

I knew ford was a big joke, but for some reason, I thought maybe should give it another chance. Boy, was that a $15,000 mistake! I have had this cougar for over a year now, with just over 40,000 miles, and it has been to the shop more then all my previous cars put together! It seems like every month something goes wrong. For example, the electric out lit blew up on me while on the freeway. I heard a crackling noise, and before you know it, my car was filled with smoke! Like I said before, I have only had this car for 1 year, and I am already trying to get rid of it!

Strength:

It has great features, like it gives you how many miles you can go without refilling the car with gas and the speed.

Weakness:

It does get alot of brake dust on the rims.

I purchased my 2002 Mercury Cougar in December. I absoutley love it! I have it in Silver Frost and the interior is in medium graphite. The car drives so smooth and it''s really fast. Everyone is always complimenting me on the color, the speed the beauty of the car. I''ve had it for almost 3 months and so far so good no problems.

Strength:

Used price, speed, quiet ride, looks, interior features, good on gas, handling

Weakness:

electrical system (minor stuff ie. sunroof, warning lights), brake dust

best bang for your dollar (if used) the same model year acura integra gs-r is atleast $6000 more. Now if you factor in the fact that it is quieter, more comfortable, has more options, has way cheaper parts, and has more punch (smoked way to many integras to count) you can''t go wrong. I used to own an 96'' acura integra and let me tell you integra''s have nothing on the cougar. if anyone is concerned about the quality of your cougar, just remember that the $6000 you save on the purchase compared to an integra)is enough to get a 4yr warranty on the vehicle! So, if you do the math, even if your car is set on auto-destruct it is still a way better deal then all you retards paying 19''000 CANADIAN for a 5yr old integra!

Strength:

Rides wonderful on the intersate, very eye-catching! Even to the police (smile) I got a ticket! Only good for a single person.

Weakness:

The brakes always drag with a loud roaring noise. They also continue to squeak when I apply the brake pedal. The check coolant light comes on when the car is started up in the am, and never goes out. Also, the air-bag light flashes periodically while driving. The remote keyless entry will not work all of the time (for the doors and for the trunk). When I start it up in the morning before going to work, there is a loud, roaring noise that sounds when the defroster is turned on, and presents a foul smell. Anything else? Hmmm, brake dust accumulates very quickly on the front wheels. Low resale value.

I purchased this car (new) because I was having problems with my Ford Escort. I received a great deal on my car, and payments were comfortable for me. I was pleased at first, now I am very disappointed I decided to purchase the Cougar. I have had nothing but major problems with my car. When I''ve taken it to the dealership, they assured me that all was well, when I knew better. They reassured me that I have the extended warranty, and have continued to send me home with my car (not repaired). I have complained to Ford Motor Company, however, they continue to tell me that what I''m experiencing is merely an isolated event, and that they can''t do anything if no one else has had the same complaints. I am a 3rd time buyer within the Ford family, but I can reassure you that I will NEVER purchase another Ford/Lincoln/Mercury product again. Hope you have better luck than I have had with my car. Also, my car is only 21 months old.
