Strength:
Rides wonderful on the intersate, very eye-catching! Even to the police (smile) I got a ticket! Only good for a single person.
Weakness:
The brakes always drag with a loud roaring noise. They also continue to squeak when I apply the brake pedal. The check coolant light comes on when the car is started up in the am, and never goes out. Also, the air-bag light flashes periodically while driving. The remote keyless entry will not work all of the time (for the doors and for the trunk). When I start it up in the morning before going to work, there is a loud, roaring noise that sounds when the defroster is turned on, and presents a foul smell. Anything else? Hmmm, brake dust accumulates very quickly on the front wheels. Low resale value. I purchased this car (new) because I was having problems with my Ford Escort. I received a great deal on my car, and payments were comfortable for me. I was pleased at first, now I am very disappointed I decided to purchase the Cougar. I have had nothing but major problems with my car. When I''ve taken it to the dealership, they assured me that all was well, when I knew better. They reassured me that I have the extended warranty, and have continued to send me home with my car (not repaired). I have complained to Ford Motor Company, however, they continue to tell me that what I''m experiencing is merely an isolated event, and that they can''t do anything if no one else has had the same complaints. I am a 3rd time buyer within the Ford family, but I can reassure you that I will NEVER purchase another Ford/Lincoln/Mercury product again. Hope you have better luck than I have had with my car. Also, my car is only 21 months old. Similar Products Used: So little time to present all that I have to present. |

Mercury Cougar V6 MTX
Strength:
The V6 is very nice, lots of torque and free reving to almost 7000rpm. The 5 speed MTX is not bad. The car really shine at highway speed, quiet and handles very well. It handles very well in corners. The trunk space is great. The rear seats are small but most peole say that they are confortable.
Weakness:
I have had the Check Engine light on and it took the dealer a few times ti find the short in the wiring harness. My windshield cracked, it was replaced under warranty. Too much brake dust from the front brakes. I was searching for a new car and ended up renting a 2000 Cougar while on a trip. Loved the car, so I bought one. That was two years ago. I still love the Cougar. I have a a few problems, but nothing that makes me hate the car. Feels very solid. |

Great Design. Eye Catching! Trip Computer. Cup holder in back seat.
Weakness:
Uncomfortable seats! Not much cushion. Bucket seats in back uncomfortable. Not a lot of room. Can only get 2 people back there. CupHolder in front seat sucks! As soon as you turn a corner it dumps on the floor or better yet in your lap. Brakes loud! Trunk Release doesn''t always work. Great Looking car! The design caught my eye! I had to have one. I have had so many problems with it! I feel like i am taking it into the shop every Month. Had to replace the tires several times also. I admit I love my car but can''t stand making trips to get it fixed! |

Strength:
Styling is nice & seats are comfortable.
Weakness:
Electrical system is horrible. I have had this car in 3 times for the same problem, they only figured out the problem when the car was out of warranty. Sound system cuts out for no apparant reason. Brakes squeek relentlessly. Choice of tire and tire manufactures is VERY limited. IF I would have brought this car to the dealership every time I had a problem it would have been in every 6 weeks. When I bought my cougar I had high hopes for this car. I can say that I like the styling, confort and positioning of knobs and switches inside the car. However it''s reliability is another story. If you want a car for looks, buy a cougar. If you want long term reliability, find yourself another car... this one''s not for you. Similar Products Used: None |

V6 c2
Strength:
great clutch, geared well, no more push-rod 3.8 with bad head gaskets. not a mustang (ie not everyone has one) really a pretty cheap car. good fuel economy (octane too) nice front seats, my cupholders work well-(new for 2001?),fold down back seats (good for small surfboards) fastest car I''ve driven extensively I think except maybe a 96 seville and the V8 Mercedes
Weakness:
front wheel drive (grr, not a mustang), trunk popper is hit and miss. small back seat (good for potential child seats or underweight spider monkeys) Really like the car, bought it after I blew the head gasket/warped the head on my 87 civic. The car gets mid-20''s to low 30''s in MPG on the Highway, which is much better than the 12-18mpg my old Mercedes V8 got. The Mercedes also has a ground that I''ve yet to be able to find. It was nice to own a coup again though, (both others were sedans) and with no lock knob poking me in the arm when I have the window open. First car that I don''t have to wear a hat to keep my hair from blowing in my face with the driver window down on the interstate. The clutch is perfect. Not to short like my brothers 94 civic si, but not too long like on the Benz or my dad''s ranger, My only regret is that it is front wheel drive. I miss tracking around U-turns with the Mercedes or my old 90 thunderbird, rear differential at its best, and fish tailing was a lot of fun, but I''m getting used to the torque-steer, its not so bad. The 2.5 DOHC is so much faster than my old push rod 3.8. I''d venture to say this car is as fast under 60mph as a 4.6 V8 I test drove a while back, and I think the published numbers support that. I think the resale value is probably pretty low because people whine too much about American cars on review pages. Get a four or five-year warranty and it’s still a lot cheaper than comparable imports. Mine only cost so much because It was the only V6-5speed I could find in the area, and it came with all kinds silly little trim package stuff like wheel badges and leather interior with little cougar symbols. I was rather happy to get all wheel disk breaks and an in dash 6-disk. I also paid a bit more for the extended warranty, just to make sure I was done paying for it when the 60000 miles came up. (Three years wasn’t a problem but I’ve already at almost 8000 miles and have yet to mail in my first car payment, thanks to the 3-month deferment.) Car handles very well, and I’m glad to hear about the good bumpers from previous reviewers. I guess that’s the nice thing about a 3000lb car, even if the little Celica is a good bit quicker. Oh and someone said they got the trunk thing fixed at the dealership, I’m glad to here it can be fixed. Also the potential for an after-market supercharger kit making it (advertised at approx.) a 5.4sec 0-60 car was nice, but I think I’ll have to wait till the warranty is up to find out about that. Still if your buying a used one for 10 or 1 Similar Products Used: 90 V6 base thunderbird, 86 escort, 86 & 94 corrola, 87 & 94 civic, 90 & 93 camery 4cyl, 88 & 95 taurus, 86 & 96 seville, 79 300D with V8 gas engine. |

Cougar V6 auto
Strength:
The car looks nice and handles well. It corners beautifully. Too bad it''s totally poor quality construction and materials.
Weakness:
Here''s a list of the maintenance problems I''ve had: 1. Sunroof squealed when opening (when they fixed this, they nicely left a few greasy fingerprints on the interior of the roof) 2. Passenger seatbelt locked up for no reason every time it was used. 3. Cupholder, a total piece of junk. First time it broke, it would retract into the console, pitching the drink onto the floow. It''s broken again, this time it dumps the drink onto the driver''s lap when you go around a corner. 3. The center console got loose and wobbly. I had to fight to get this replaced. They tried to tell me it was normal. 4. The leather seat covers, a $1000 option, wore through. I had a wear spot develop on both seats about halfway up on the seatbacks. It was worn right down to the fabric! (remember, I''ve only driven 17,000 miles!) The dealer put me through 2 full weeks of my car in the shop while they jerked me around over ordering the seat covers, with conflicting stories about what was or wasn''t ordered and when and whether it was overnighted, and what actually came in. It was a nightmare! This dealership tends to lie about the status of a repair. Their feeling is if you have their loaner ca When I first bought the car in March 2000, I loved it. It has a sharp, sporty look, and handles beautifully. But it didn''t take long for things to start going wrong. To put it simply, the car has become a maintenance nightmare. It''s in the shop constantly. The quality of the parts in this car is very poor. I''ve owned it for 18 months and have 17,000 miles on it, and I''m amazed at how often if has to be serviced. My recommendation, DON''T BUY THIS CAR! You will be forever sorry. I finally got tired of the hassle and am trading mine in on an Acura in a few days. The final insult? A $12,000 trade-in offer on a car that I''ve taken beautiful care of and has ALL the options, leather, sunroof, V6, etc. I lost $8500 in a year and a half! It''s obvious that this car''s reputation as a piece of junk is known in the industry. I will NEVER buy another Mercury product again! The best thing about this car is I have had two accidents where someone has pulled out in front of me. The first one I hit the guy pretty hard, and my car was barely scratched however the front side bumper of his car was crushed. The second one, they guys front side of his car was pretty much crushed in to the engine. My car only sustained front bumper damage and a scratch around $1300. So the car is defintely solid and can handle getting bumped around. My leather seats have faired pretty well so far so good. Comfortable to drive..
Weakness:
Electrical sucks. Brakes do squeak more than normal.. I love my car, but the reliability sucks. After the first year, I had the altenator changed, mainly due to an electrical problem. I also had the about two or three recall items. I still am having electrical problems, I took it in today because its acting like it wants to cut off. I had problems with the trunk latch, but I took it back in and they rewired it and now it works fine. I also had a new speed control put in because it was having problems going into the next gear. Overall, I would say that its an ok car although my car is black, and since it sits lower or the shape or something I always have people pulling out in front of me like they can''t see me. This will be my last Ford product I purchase unless I buy a truck. Similar Products Used: Owned a Ford Tempo, |

Looks, looks, looks!!! It''s also relatively quiet for a sports car....but aside from superficial stuff, this car runs wonderfully, has a lot of good features for a reasonable price, and I love driving it. Definitely couldn''t say that about my old car!
Weakness:
The speakers were fading in and out after having it for a month. The engine has been making some odd noises in the morning lately, but I think that''s because the weather is getting colder -- I''m getting it checked out though. I love this car. I love the way it handles, looks, feels, everything. I''ve had a couple minor problems, but my car is still under warranty for another 15,000 miles (ext. warranty), so anytime something happens, I''m on the phone with the dealer. I got a great deal on it (not bad considering it was my first time haggling), and I''m so happy with everything. Similar Products Used: None |

Strength:
Good acceleration(after injen intake installed and injen exhaust),great looks(with aftermarket wing, carbin fiberhood, carbon fiber tail light covers, and carbon fiber rear view mirrors),paint keeping up fine(ford paint sux, got it painted acura NSX yellow),and let me think hmmm interior is good(carbon fiber dash kit), I have had no complaints with the back seat(kinda like a park bench but kewl and different), good turning, and front and rear lights good look(different.
Weakness:
Well let me think....Cooliant light stays on, breaks sqweak at slow speeds, fading interior but managable, tires don''t last as long as I would like them too, but I drive crazy, gas gauge lacks to really tell me how much gas is in the damn thing, trunk latch gets stuck except when you open it with the key, and ash tay not that I smoke but the ash tray the car has to be in gear to access it. Cheesy one size doesn''t fit all cupholders, and one more thing factory muffler and exhaust system is very restrictive....MODIFICATIONS ARE THE BEST WAY TO GET THE BEST OUT OF YOUR CAR I overall like the car alot the looks and everything, I have had alot of modifications from the base model but its all good. The V6 2.5 leter is all good just needs just a lil tweak to bring out the wildcat the lies inside. TO the lady that compained about her stearing wheel shaking when she is on the highway, you need new tires, and that prob will be solved. Similar Products Used: hmmmmmmm ? |
