Looks good. Handles well

Weakness:

Not too reliable. If it has a problem its a hassle to get someone do do anything about it. And thats even under warranty.

Very nice looking car, got a ton of comments on it from all ages. My biggest gripe is the way this thing shifts. Its very notchy, seems like somthing is wrong in the tranny or clutch but they couldn't find anything. The radiator light comes on whenever i park it uphill. Airbag light also occassionally comes on. Hesitates on acceleration. Other that the ride is good, she handles well. Love the interior. No major mechanical problems it left me sit once but that turned out to be a Wire harness rubbing on the linkage that shorted a relay out. A couple wire ties and some new connections fixed it under warranty about 15,000 ago. Havn't had a problem since. I would not buy another one of these cars.

Strength:

Useability and driveability. Erganomics on the inside, very quick, great clutch, solid preformance and gas milage. And have you seen it, it looks great

Weakness:

Uses a very rare tire size. The body seems to get door dings easily, but i also park in the worst parking lot ever.

I have a 2001 cougar with 26k miles on it. I bought it new because the dealerships were marking down the price alot. I got a almost fully loaded one for 16,500. What a great car. People expect this car to keep up with a Prelude, or to smoke a mustang GT, it wont, and if you bought it expecing it to do that, sorry. I have driven on all types of roads. The dragon in North Carolina is my favorite. My buddy was in a Mirage and pushing it to its limits, I was just crusing. His tires were wailing, my were silent. I drive with my buddy in a stock civic. I can pass him on the highway easy, and his car cant keep up in turns. Another friend has a prelude, it could probably beat mine, but its 6 grand more. Take that 6 grand, buy some driving classes, and you will be much faster than that cat on a road course. I am 6 foot 2 and i fit easily in my car. I dont fit in the celica, mr2, integra, among others. The cougar is very comftorable, with good shoulder room. The visibility is fantastic, especailly for a hatch back. I dive this car hard, and dont stop whith the pavement. The ground clearance allows me to jump curbs, and go 40 over speed humps. I can get to all of the dash controls by reaching a finger from my left hand on the steering wheel, or my right hand on the gear shifter. The design of the interior is impecable. My favorite part is the trunk. If i fold down the back seats i can fit my bike in the trunk easily. I have fit 8 foot boards in my car, 3*8 sheets of plywood, minfridges, and a boat load of junk. try fitting any of that in any other sport compact. With 26 k miles i have had no issues except for the fact the tires are hard to find. I had an O2 sensor go out, but it was replaced for free. I have not had any issues with the cupholder, but honestly, i dont use it much. Im glad i dont have a sunroof, so i dont know about that problem. And my trunk release does usually take to clicks of the button, but i dont mind. If you are looking for a hot rod, get a Mustang 5.0. If you want a rice car that you have to drive with your head out the sunroof, get the Integra. If you want a well rounded car that you dont have to plan the rest of your life around, i think i have the car for you. For the money, the cougar can't be beat.

Strength:

Good acceleration, comfortable seating, made my first 1200 mile drive in it, would do it over and over again.

Weakness:

poor acceleration on a turn, not sure if that's a flaw with the traction control or what, but when doing a sharp right turn and hitting the pedal, there's barely any pick up.

Beautiful car, real head turner, made everyone at the office jealous. Great pick up in a straight line, cup holder problem seems to have been eliminated in 2001, the cup holder is solid as a rock and works great, never had a problem with the trunk.

the gorgeous exterior, the gorgeous interior...this is my dream car just for the looks! i must admit i've enjoyed the car, if not just for the compliments it has recieved. i really don't think i'd buy another one though.

Weakness:

the cup holder is the most ridiculous thing i have ever seen. i, too, have had numerous beverages spilt on me while driving. problem solved: i stopped bringing drinks into the car. There is some heavy vibration when i come to a quick stop, which always gets on my nerves. besides that, nothing major really.

I purchased this car close to a year ago. I can't believe all of the horrible reviews it has recieved. The problems that Cougar owners have listed on here, haven't happened to me and hopefully won't! I bought this used, it still only has 25k miles on it b/c i don't drive a million miles a day like most people. It is a maroon red color, manual, with power everything, spoiler and alloys. it doesn't have a sunroof though, and if what most of the ppl are saying on this site is true about the cougar sunroof, then thank god i don't! i have minor problems, nothing really to go into detail about. the car is very attractive though, i get so-so gas mileage, and it is dependable.

Weakness:

sun roof breaks and cannot buy components. Costs over $1000 to replace. Cup holder is useless, on turns it dumps containers.

Whatever you do, do not get one with the sun roof. In addition to the others listed on this site with broken sun roofs, mine broke and they will not do anything to help with fixing it even though they know that there are issues with it. I told them about the ones I found on this site and about others that broke before the cars were even out of warranty (I know of two fixed under warranty) and they still will not do anything to remedy the situation.

Strength:

Sporty looking, fast, roomy.

Weakness:

gas mileage isn't that great but could be worse.

I have now had my Cougar for 3 years. I enjoy my car, I haven't had any major problems. I have had to have the transmission fluid changed to stop it from "shaking" and I had to have a wheel bearing replaced. The brake pads have been replaced once and the rotors turned and the car has over 95,000 miles on it. Good car, sporty, fast...quick acceleration.

Strength:

quick acceleration for brisk passing on a hwy, beautiful and roomy inside, sporty look outside. what more can an attention wanter ask for.

Weakness:

the cup holder (laughing). it's just like the ford contour's inside, as far as the cupholder goes, it sucks. i have ruined alot of pants, shirts, and my car smells like mcdonalds orange splash. ahhhaah but it can be overlooked. also the 6 disc changer, the cd's get stuck, and it also dosen't read mp3's yet.

For all my people who love a sporty attention getting ride, this is the car for you. between the sterio upgrade which gets loud by itself as the engine is pushed, and the beautiful, slick outside, this car is well at the top of it's class. i have the manual transmission, and it's great for quick acceleration, and fast passing on an uncrowded highway. i have had the car for about a month and i love it. i have pushed it all the way up to 125 mph, and i sware i thought i was going about 80 mph. i bought the car used, and it had 34k miles on it, but u could never tell. it's worth the 13,000 i paid, but i would go so far as 16,000 and up.

See summary

The car gets only 14-16 miles per gallon in normal city driving which is what I do mostly. The EPA sticker said 20 mpg in town, a discrepancy of nearly 30%. I'm conservation oriented. The service dpt. has run checks which claim all is o. k. I feel ripped off and don't know what to do to remedy situation. Suggestions welcomed.

Bre-ex was a better investment

Purchase price is CND$ I have experienced nothing but problems with this peice of crap. 3 times the rear suspension needed to be replaced after long arguments that the clunking noise was not inherent. I am on the third radio, the brake lights and cruise control quit working, the front cup holder has cost me a drive back home to change my pants, the air bag light periodically comes on, one rear seatbelt clip quite working, the slider for the passenger seat has broken again, the power windows drag and stick when it is warm out, and the thing that pisses me off the most about this rolling death trap is the power moon roof. One of the sliders for the roof that is attached to the long gear has broken. I took it apart and found that the other side has cracked as well. I went to Ford, both the dealership and customer service(or lack there of) and was advised that this part is not available seperately and I have to order the complete ring. This part is $1,386.00 CND. The equivalent part for the Contour is available for $65.00. I think all Ford employees take the same customer service course. Once confronted about their junk the get defensive and say there cars a top quality and sorry we cannot do anything for you. I encourage all to purchase a bunch of lemon stickers and advertise this web site to ensure Ford realizes they should do something about their Quality is Job last!!!

Strength:

I think it's one of the best looking sports cars on the road for under $30000.

Weakness:

- Performance isn't comparable to other cars in it's class - Cup holder sucks - Defrost vent piece comes out - HORRIBLE resale value - VERY expensive replacement parts for such a cheap vehicle

I have mixed feelings about this car. I love it's looks yet don't like it's performance. The option for a turbo or supercharger would have made this car sell much easier to sell than it currently is. My first warranty experience was with my power steering rack. It had to be replaced which the dealer did without incident. I didn't bother to take it in for the following other issues: 1) Trunk release only works after hitting two or three times. 2) Center console moves around with every bump. 3) Vent piece over defrost vents comes loose and has to constantly be popped back in during the cold weather months. My warranty just expired two months ago even though I'm still under 36,000 miles. Guess what? My sliding moonroof has decided it no longer wants to completely close. The dealer told me I'm looking at $3000 to fix it!!! I told him to stick it up his ass. My opinion - Don't buy one, unless you want to buy mine :)
