Strength:

Lots of options, styling, gas milage (32 plus), price, warranty.

Weakness:

A little weak on take-off power, stereo system not great, but adequate.

I did a lot of research and test driving of other vehicles, but the Elantra won out. I have driven 11,000 miles in the first 3 months; all trouble free. Most of my driving is on the highway; it is very comfortable on long trips. I got the sedan; the trunk has enough room for all my stuff (including golf clubs). I got the automatic trans, but I wish I had gone for the manual. It's a little slow on take-off, but cruises very well. The GT model has a lot of features standard including leather seats; very good value for the price. The 100,000 mile warranty is great; I'll use mine up in 2 years at this rate.

Weakness:

bad rep. with transmissions warranty is not all it claims to be

I bought the car with 10,000 miles on it, and my transmission went out at 20,000 miles. The dealer that it was towed to (not where i bought the car) said that they weren't gonna cover it because it COULD have been caused by rocking in the snow (it haden't snowed at all!) Then they wouldn't give me a rental car when that is part of the warranty. But after a week and a half of fighting, it got covered. 20,000 miles later, my trans. is slipping again. Now, my O2 censor went out, electrical problems with radio and lights. Other than trans, no other major problems.

Dollar Value, uniqueness, maneverablity, clean 5-speed, versatility and practicality of the hatch

Weakness:

more power! perhaps a turbo or V6? AWD would be a nice option too.

Having just turned 20K miles, and after 9 months of ownership, i must say that i am seriously impressed with my '02 Elantra GT. I really enjoy driving my GT and i've gotten many compliments on it. most of them are, "oh! is that a hyundai?!". The car drives better than expected and styling is great.

style, price, inside roominess, standards, safety, size

Weakness:

my foot wore through the floor mat in 6 months, some interior materials not the highest quality but good for the price, paint seems to ding a little easy- but I did end up with the black so it shows more.

So far this car has been great to me and I'm approaching 9000 miles. I had a minor problem with the driver side sun visor but brought it in and they ordered the replacement; no problems since. There is some annoying buzz in the doors somewhere when the speakers are up loud. Both my only complaints and both very minor. The car has been great... nice and compact for parking, very roomy inside with all the extras... even adjustable height seats! I test drove the automatic but decided on the the manual as I noticed significantly better acceleration. My old car died and I didn't have the luxury of research time when buying a new one, but now I'm glad I didn't waste it cuz I got a great car anyway. Gas mileage in the city has been pretty steady at 27mpg.

This is the first new car I have bought that was not made in the USA. I am impressed. I did 3 months of research on cars before buying. For $13.5K, including T,T&L, plus some dealer installed options, I got A wonderful car. Four wheel disc brakes, with ABS and traction control. A 5 speed transmission that shifts like a dream. A 2.0 liter engine that pulls a fully loaded car along very well, even with the A/C running! Outstanding head room and leg room (I'm 6"1' tall). Cruise control and tilt steering wheel. Good instrumentation with tachometer and temp gauge. Fully adjustable seats with lumbar support. Fine styling, very appealing. High performance speed rated (H) tires rated 400 treadwear, A temperature and A traction. Split fold down rear seats. Huge trunk. Of course the 5 year, 60k miles warranty. Excellent handling and steering. Easy to park in tight spaces. I researched Focus, Sentra, Galant and other similar and this car is equal to or better in nearly every important category. Buy this car for its value and performance. Buy this car for its potential.

engine pepy, seems to be very durable (about the only part of the car staying together)

Weakness:

many known problems that the owners are not notified until A. there is a problem and then B. usually is out of warranty by then and costs tons of $$$. preventive matenince costs outrageous compared to other makers. deceptive practices, was not notified of a recall, was told that i would only be able to keep my warranty if i had work done at that shop which was almost double than other places. gas mileage more like 25 or less only observed 33 mpg when i drove for 7 hours straigh on highway. extremly expensive required for warranty matenince.

Well.. were do i start. I really like the car but with 61,000 miles on it i smelt smoke and lights wouldn't shut off, radio was on and off, air bag light came on no more clock, speedometer stoped and started along with tach. all problems of a faulty door wire harness that they knew about six months after i bought the car brand new now its 2 years old. they wont fix because its over the 60,000 mile warrenty even thought they knew about it way before. have to pay them over 1,000 dollars to fix harnesses around the car that have shorted out because of the door harness. just payed them 900 for a 60,000 mile check up. gas mileage went horriably down afterwards. airfilter still dirty and airbox even had dirt in it, back door squeaked horribly after i got the car back and brakes still squeak when you let pressure off the pedal, which they were told about before the check up and i was told dont worry thats part of the check up. (well it didnt get done) didnt change spark plugs, striped out oil pan plug. (had to bicker with them about that to get replaced) all in all i feel that if i could go back to my old car i would have spent the 1,000 dollars to fix it and would still be driving it (know the person driving it still, well over 200,000 miles with just oil changes) but i bought a car that supposibly had a great "warranty" lasts a long time and is affordable with 66,000 miles on it i have spent close to 2,500 on PREVENTIAVE matenince and 1,200 on other things already. you be the judge!!! any questions please e-mail me.

Attractive, affordable, comfortable, spacious, great warranty.

Weakness:

Seems to idle a little too fast between 1st and 3rd when shifting. Not the best paint--but if you wash it often it's decent.

Like most of the other posts on this site, I too was apprehensive about purchasing a Hyundai. In fact, I was the one that joked about Hyundai owners. But...as a struggling college student whose Toyota Tercel was approaching imminent death, I needed an affordable ride. After months of research, I bought the Elantra GLS and have to say, that I am impressed with this car. It handles well, is roomy and fun to drive. For the price I paid, (I got all the extras moonroof, CD player, etc...) The other cars I considered (Altima, Corolla, Galant)couldn't match the options or warranty you get with this car. It even has side airbags!!! So far, I have no regrets. I have even recommended it to others.

Strength:

Good value for the price, safety (mine has ABS, traction cotrol and side airbags), good acceleration (beaten more expensice models ;)), stylish, solid 5-year 60K warranty.

Weakness:

Quality: frequent visits to the dealer: both headlights went off (after a year!!), turning light went off, inhibitor switch replaced (had high revs on idle and grinding sound when starting), all plastic knobs covering screws in the doors inside came out; cheap materials

I'll be two years soon that I have this car. Pretty happy with it except for more visits to the dealer than I'd like to, although mostly with minor things like dead lights. Standard features of this car are unbeatable; I also got an extra option to have side airbags. Warranty is excellent (even those dead lights were covered!). The re-designed 2001 model is a bullseye: no surprise I see many more 2001+ Elantras on the road than ever before.

door rattlres with the factory stereo, 33 miles to a gallon as stickered, well not realy more like 25mpg. brakes are a little squihsy but they do work

I read up on this car amd thought i'll check it out. When I arrived at the dealership I started looking at the access, cheaper and i felt it when i drove it. Drove the Elantra an fell in love. Good salesman, probally could have haggled him down, but didn't feel like it. The front doors ratted a littler with factory stereo, I got the tape deck. I just spent 500 dollars to have a new CD/stereo put in and no more rattles. One problem with fuel lid called dealer and they called me back after there buisness hours, I fixed it with a little bead on the latch. Was rear ended and car held up great. So far so good. more 1500 miles later in 1 month! Fun to drive, highly recomend the stick with a four cilinder. My only problem is with the gas mileage. It is closer to 25, with me driving.
